More like top 5. He doesn't even use 15 most likely.

Most times he uses no more than 3, Tensioner,Rake,Pick. But let's be honest he's a Pro hahaha I'd just either need a key or a K 12 Saw.

...I'd just like to see a way to buy his fave's on Amazon or in one quick buy... Sparrow, Peterson, this lever or that... We're mostly beginners looking up to his experience.

@@adg6280 I'd also love to see a "these are my absolute favorite, immediate go to" list, but locklab has a list of types of picks you "should" have in order to practice and I ordered the lot from Peterson under $100 last week.

Thank you for this review. I purchased a couple of weeks ago, it arrived last night, and I picked my first padlock tonight. Took me two nights and probably an hour total after 3 or 4 tires....kinda frustrated I could feel the cylinder move a bit and click back when my hand got tired. But when that Master 141t turned open just now...it's like I accomplished something. I *think* I learned a little bit about feel of clicks, core movement, binding pins, and how each tool in the set has a different touch. Thanks LPL, I can see myself with another hobby.

I bought a cheap combination lock and tried to decode it. I have yet to do it.
Oh well. One thing I have learned from Bosian Bill and LPL is that picking locks is a skill set that you improve over time. I tell myself that.

WARNING. I bought this kit (december 2020) and it's not the same anymore ! Picks are about 25% SMALLER, yes smaller then the old kit (in all dimensions, width, thickness and length). Tension wrenches are only 2 and one is paper thin and useless. I do own the old kit and was able to measure them side by side. New kit is useful only for picking small 60mm and smaller padlocks. Just a heads up for you ppl. Hope @LockPickingLawyer updates his review and passes the warning on.

Thanks LPL. I was putting together an order for Sparrows as a gift to a friend who is interested in picking and of course a few things for me. It was getting a little expensive, but this set looks like a good value. I'm ordering one for him and one for myself. I'll have enough money left over for a tubular lock picking set as well. If not for your endorsement I would have assumed these to be junk like most of the other cheap Chinese pick sets. Thank you for this review, and thanks for the HUK tubular pick set review. What a value that one offers. I've been on Peterson's waiting list for several months and I cringe to think how much I will spend on that one whenever they finally make more.

It's kind of funny, I saw this set for the first time today, and you were the first person I thought of. Like you, I'm a single pin picker at heart and when I saw these I immediately got a big grin. When I ran the kit up on TH-cam for validation, I chuckled when I found this review. I'm placing my order for them as soon as I finish this comment. As always, thanks for all you do to keep us all informed ... you do it the best!! Cheers Mate!!

I bought these picks over a year ago and they have been great to me. Still look new. I work as a maintenance guy for a living and people lose keys to padlocks or lock their keys in cabinets all the time. I practiced a lot on old padlocks until I got a feel for what I was doing inside the lock. I still suck, but even then I can usually get the lock open within 30 seconds to 5 minutes. If I can’t get it open after 5 minutes I try spraying WD-40 in the lock to loosen up the pins so I can feel them clicking better. I’ve never not been able to open a lock using this pick set.

Picked up some extra turning tools, some clear training locks, along with another pick set that seems to compliment this one with a good assortment of rakes and such. About 60 pieces in all. I have these, but mine didn't come with the acrylic lock. Of all the chinese cheap picks I have tried, I like these the best. So much so I bought three one for each car and one as a general back up.

  • @haberdashery314

Quality seems to have declined since this review.
I just received a set in the mail. The solder (or welds) that hold the pick to the handle are very sloppy and sharp. welds were partly missing on a couple of picks so that the picks folded at the attachment point the first time I used them. The picks themselves appear to have been cut using tools with serrated blades. so the top and bottom edges of the picks are also serrated, making it very hard to feel anything inside the lock. It may be possible to file off these rough edges, but the light sanding that was sufficient for LPL would not come close to cleaning up the set I received. I sent photos of the bent picks to banggood, who offered my $5 back. lol.
RE: the included training lock. I used crazy glue instead of clear epoxy to fill the fake bolt holes. This caused them to turn white, instead of turning them clear as they did for LPL. My mistake.

    • @moshelevceder
      @moshelevceder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Aw crap I just bought them, hopefully the quality is the same if I sand them

  • @LoppanH
    @LoppanH 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Got my set today and it feels very good maybe on the thick side about 0.68mm or 0.027" but that can be corrected and the steel feels strong. The finish was acceptable and handle smooth over all nice finish so I think I got a good set for my money and the handle covers fits on my Praxis pick set which are a bit sharp on the edges. Good price even without the discount.

I wish you did yearly review of at least one cheap lock pick set that you consider worth the money. This set seems to have been very good for the price but it's no longer available.
Maybe something like "A good initial set for year 2021" which includes a selection of cheap picks (a cheap set like this or a couple of individual picks) and a lock or two suitable as training locks instead of those acrylic locks.

@LockPickingLawyer I would really love to see an update to this, more to the point for your suggestions on a good quality (reasonable priced) beginning lock pick set (out of all companies). ALSO a "preppers" lock pick set suggestions would be great to see also. These may fall into the same sets, not sure. I have some locks right now that I can't open, including one on the door of an old rv on our property, because the keys are gone. watched your channel for sometime now, always found it interesting. @@galdavonalgerri2101 Yes, all proper nouns in English are capitalized. :) Mr. Dova's critique of your question, if you're curious, is because in English the verb "To Miss" is a transitive verb, which means an object is required immediately after the verb. What you needed was an intransitive verb, which in this case would have been fail, as in "you failed to tell us...". That's really only something a native speaker would pick up on. Hope that helps!

Develop your skills with a small set of a couple hooks and rakes, then make your decisions about expanding your tool set once you understand picking and can make an informed decision about what works for you.

After many years of enjoying your videos I decided to try my hand with this budget set.
You mention that some improved turning tools are required, but I can't find much info on where to get or how to make usable/good ones. Looking at some of you videos, especially the picking tension video, and the colab with TKOR, its looking to me like good turning tools might make a significant improvement to my learning experience.
I'm very handy with metal fab etc etc. What would you recommend for a reasonably price purchase or DIY option? I couldn't find much on your channel or others. I have many ideas, but keen to see recommendations from some of the top pickers.
Perhaps there are good product reviews and diy tutorials out there but I'm not searching the right terms.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. youtube is doing strange things on your channel page. I can only scroll back 3 months, then it loads the latest video and starts looping infinity through the last 3 months of videos. I was able to search your channel for tension tool, and got some related content, but its possible I'm not seeing what I'm looking for...
      Kind Regards from Australia.

I have this set from Christmas one year! Wish it had a top of keyway tension but meh. They are also the thickest picks ive seen and are hard to get through some keyways.

    Hi LPL:
I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now, and I want to start getting into lock picking. Do you have a list (with links) of some good tools to start out with, preferable without breaking the bank? Also, are there any common physical stores I can purchase lock-picking/locksport equipment from?
    Thanks.

they make it quite differently now in terms of quality. still a whole lot better than most inexpensive pick sets out there but certainly not the same as the quality of the picks in this vid

+In 2 DODO Depends on the lock and pick profile. My most used pick in euros is the .025" Sparrows SSDev short hook (and there is a similar pick in this set).

Nice that quality and prices are desirable. However, I'm reluctant to buy things like this from China as I can't know what I'm subsidizing. Prices that low suggest something is missing in a production process, and I don't trust it.

How do you decide which pick to use, with ten variations of hook? I'm a beginner, I started out with one of the cheapie lockpick sets from Amazon, and have now upgraded to a handful of Peterson picks and home-made ones - but I can still only open most of the Masters, half of the others, and none of the American locks.
