    What Quincy is doing is making the drums sound musical. All the great Jazz drummers had that ability. Just listen to Joe Morello on Take Five. Our Jazz Quartet plays that number and during my "break" I try to emulate Joe. Yesterday it "worked" !! I hadn't played real challenging Jazz since the 90s as few even knew what it was. Found good players again and it's fab recreating that music . And Quincy you have that magic left hand like Joe. Arthritis makes it a little painful for me but I soldier on with trad grip trying to be just like you. Never miss your Vids 👍👍👍

      I truly appreciate your kind words Mr. Great Scott! I’m humbled to have Ny name mentioned in the same paragraph as the great Joe Morello. Much respect to you sir👊🏾

    This is such a great, intuitive exercise! An exercise that every student and self-taught should learn to play BEFORE start reading sheet music. I know a lot of colleagues who just pull their fills out of drawers; this here is different; this is learning to speak BEFORE learning to read, the way it should be. I love your lessons and your channel!👍

    Thanks again Mr. Davis. It’s easy to get into the mindset of over analyzing what we hear and what we are trying to play. I have to keep reminding myself to “k.i.s.s” (keep it simple stupid) and not get overwhelmed by trying to fit all of the technical stuff into a solo part to try to make things sound good.
    Thanks for breaking it down and always giving me a “reset” tool for better practicing.

    Great vid as always but are you thinking ahead of what you want to play or are you randomly moving around the kit without any thought?

    • @drumqtips
      @drumqtips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question Ben! Playing with flow and intentionality means you have to put thought towards what you are playing but it has to happen very...EXTREMELY quickly. That's why this is a great exercise because it will cut down on the time it takes to decide what to play. Then you start reaching a "flow state". Thanks for watching Ben!

    Hi Quincy, great lesson as always! I have a question: How long should we stay in one of the examples
    in the exercise to move on to the next one. eg. from the eighth notes to the triplets.
    I noticed in my practice routines that if I do many many repetitions for months in one exercise, it will get into my system (sort of speak) and it will be more natural to me after a while.
    Thank you!!

    • @williamkleitsch1153
      @williamkleitsch1153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found in my practicing that when I start a new idea it is unusual and difficult and confusing. After I practice the idea being very mindful of what I am doing (practice slow) I eventually get to the point where I do not want to stop. It becomes a part of me. This is where the idea begins to swing or groove. This process can take 5 minutes, or 5 years depending in how I relate to the idea.
      In other words play until you love it. Then move on.
