  • Although Yonkers MC Styles P and Harlem rapper Dave East represent two different generations of hip-hop, each artist is known for his lyrical prowess. The duo recently teamed up for their joint project ‘Beloved,’ which densely packs vivid street tales throughout its 13 tracks. On the latest episode of ‘For The Record,’ the New York natives sat down with Genius’ Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman to discuss the collaborative album as well as the decline of lyricism in hip-hop.

    Lyricism will always matter. No matter how popular “mumble” rap seems to be, the top dogs or the artist we as a culture collectively celebrates are lyricist... with the exception of Future & Travis Scott.

      Nah yo. Like only the THREE rappers can really rap. The rest of the biggest dont give a fuck about lyricism and the number of rappers that do care gets lower and lower as time passes. No way "lyricism will always matter" damn near every new rapper cant rap and they get big

    • @wunderbread7793
      @wunderbread7793 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      First you say that lyricism will always matter. Then you say mumble rap is the most popular genre of rap, then you say that the lyricists will always be on top (which really isn’t true right now). And then you say that future and Travis Scott are also some of your favorite artists.
      You statements are everywhere

    • @Murmurrr
      @Murmurrr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wunder Bread I think he's acknowledging that non-lyrical rap is big right now (and usually is) but lyrical rap will always have a place. And by "on top" I think he means in in terms of popularity, but in terms of respect.
      But idk, I think hip hop is entering a new era that incorporates other genres like rock and electronic. Both of those genres are not very lyrical.

  • @onpoint357

    • @justinidle7086

      Not necessarily. You need flow and delivery just as much as you need lyrics. A good flow and delivery can compensate for mediocre lyrics, but good lyrics seldom compensates for a mediocre flow and delivery.

    Lyricism is one of the foundations of rap. Respect it regardless of the era. But hip hop was also party shit too back in the day. For me, today's mainstream music isn't for me. People should always wanna progress mentally and spiritually. Do y'all thing, as far as people today. No hate. Just don't forget the bases of this shit. Have a good day y'all. 🙏

  • @danataylor7488
    @danataylor7488 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Lyricism will always matter, but being a lyricist won’t. What I mean by that is, there are people who are great rappers and those who are great lyricist.. you don’t have to be a lyricist to be a great rapper and I think thats where people get confused. Cause lets keep it a buck.. the amount of lyricist we have does not outwieght the amount of artist who can rap.

    I don't get why ppl put so much focus on mumble rap, making it bigger than it is. There's enough lyricists out there for you to not even have to notice all the "mumbling." Noname, rapsody, j.cole, drake, dave east, and amine all put out really good albums. For the ppl that are saying it's so refreshing to hear this and you one of the few non mumble rappers, it's not true. Ppl just don't take the time out to really search for and listen to good music. And stop blaming the younger generations because many of them were influenced by old trap artists and there are a lot my age and younger who are lyrically gifted but don't get recognized. Turn off the radio and just take some time adventuring through TH-cam.

And to top it all off, we even had more beef than we've had in a LONG TIME between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, Eminem and pretty much every one in hip hop lol, and Drake vs. Pusha T to name a few. The west killed it this year the south killed it this year, and NY is murdering it this year especially with all them legends coming back and making great songs Method Man, Raekwon, Redman, Juellz Santana, Joell Ortiz, Jadakiss, Jay Z, to name a few coming out and dropping straight fire.

    I grew up listening to 90s hip hop being a 80s baby. Lyrics and beats are a beautiful thing when the artist loves their craft. Not disrespecting today’s generation but it’s more like a get your money and enjoy the fruits of your labor type of vibe how I see it in regards of the music not being deep and too lyrical. Look at The Migos, mumble rappers or Tekashi 69 they want to turn up and have fun. Nothing wrong with that...this is their time. Just don’t say as you guys get older..that y’all was very lyrical. #turnup

    Lyricism always matter to Hip Hop . Lyricism however, never mattered to the rap industry . Learn the difference, people . The business only caters to what can be mass produced and sold . The culture ( the real culture, not this slang that all this mainstream platforms like to use ) is all about preserving and elevation the craft, entertaining hip hop heads FIRST, not the masses .
    The fact is ART always gets watered down when the Business grows . Rap is now the biggest genre of music, right at the time when the Rapper has the least expectation to be talented .

    Lyricism determines a good rapper. But that doesn’t matter anymore since the audience has changed now. People wanna listen to the sound rather than the lyrics. I can respect it.

    lyricism does matter, however we are in an era where more young hip hop artists are exploring different sounds to express their emotions rather than using words and crafting dope rhymes. I think that hip hop has come to a tipping point where the sound and music is more important than the lyrics and to these younger artists it feels like an unexplored side of hip hop that they are currently the first generation to pioneer.

    Styles P is so dead on point about Nas. Represent and Illmatic as a whole change what Rappers had to be, it's why the Album is so celebrated, even down to the language choices, the imagery, subject matter selection. You can tell Nas was a hip-hop head.

    no wonder hip hop doesnt sell, only in America do people listen to hip hop, all around the globe people listen to afro beats, house, island music roots etc, a hip hop new release is now like a twitter trend on a friday then forgotten about the following week, these guys will have 100 million streams (from record label payola bots) but only 1k albums sold, its like hip hop no longer makes you want to dress walk or talk like them no more, because the lyricism is gone people cant connect to it any more I very much doubt it will be dominant in the next 10 years, if it doesnt revert back to its original form as most people I know listen to more old hip hop then new

    Lloyd Banks
    Notorious B.I.G.
    50 cent
    Joe Budden
    Young Buck ( or 2Pac or eminem, it switches). I'm 20 from Sweden.

      +Zach Floyd Him and Lloyd Banks are the most underrated MC's ever in my opinion. They are very successful and rich don't get me wrong, but they don't get mentioned enough when it comes to the best MC's to ever do it. Their song ''Transitions'' is just too good.

    Lyricism will always matter but you don't need it to be successful or a star. Travis, Future, Thugga have all spit lyrical shit before but they're known for the best production, flow and the way they use their voice to become part of the beat.
