If the outdrives are locked and connected to the engines it would prevent you from manually turning the engine by hand. You should pull the outdrives before you give on the engines.

    • @Superjetjim
      @Superjetjim ปีที่แล้ว +18

Take less than an hour to pull a drive to check😊
Highly likely that’s your issue looking at the legs - they’ll have serious water ingress looking at the holes in them - this will make them lock up, stopping the engines turning over.
Also - that level of drive corrosion will most likely be caused by an earthing issue on the shore power / marina where it was moored.

I will always love how "Mechanics" look up prices for rebuilt engines... you're a MECHANIC! take a day to pull them out, depending on your access to a machine shop anywhere from 7 days to a month to rebuild, and a day to put them back in. Do what you claim to be, its not hard.

For anyone that's never seen it before, it's electrolysis. It's very common on boats in salt or brackish water. Stray current gets in the water from bad grounds (not necessarily from the boat being eaten) and reacts with the salt. I keep zinc anodes on my prop shafts, rudders, and trim tabs, plus a fairly large one on the transom that attaches to my boats bonding system. The bonding system is usually a copper ribbon or wire that runs from the zinc on the transom to every thru hull on the boat. Outdrives have a couple of spots for zincs as well and once the sacrificial zinc is eaten away the electrolysis starts on the metal.

    Hey,
I've been watching you guys from Australia.
I bought a boat with a "seized engine", it ended up being the alternator!
Glad you took the belts off, that's how I found it wasn't the engine, but the alternator.
After I sorted that it still wouldn't turn over, ended up finding a circuit breaker on top of the MerCruiser engine. It had a weird little switch under that breaker!!
After I flicked that switch it hasn't missed a beat since!!

  • @magpiefrogfrom2556
    @magpiefrogfrom2556 ปีที่แล้ว +34

If you park a boat up at a dock next to an electric shore power point that isn't grounded, isolated properly, it doesn't matter if you have sacrificial anodes, everything metal underwater within reach of the leaking current gets eaten. edit... even the boats electrics can ruin stuff, if not isolated properly.

Had a boat with a lot of corrosion on the drives but very little on the anodes
Measured with my multimeter from the leg body to the metal frame of the stand the boat was on
      Got 8-9 volts AC
Found out the ground pin on his shore power extension cord was broken off

Stern drives probably locking up engines via driveshafts. Third party and used stern drive units sell for anywhere between 2k-4k each. Boat was about $80k plus new. In running condition it would sell for about 12k now. You might be able to get $3k profit after repairs.

You cant use auto parts or engines, cam shafts are different due to constant RPM's, starters due to potential arching and explosion, carburetor different, spark plugs run hotter are different due to RPM's and the list goes on....even then OEM only, to many knock of parts on the market that break too quickly. Estimate parts required not including labor $28,000 plus. Think about it, out drives, power steering, linkages, electrical, bellows, etc

Hey guys...pull those old batteries, make sure the converter/battery charger is active and operating properly before attempting any DC checkups. Pull those wreck of outdrives out and see if you can bar the engines over. Based upon the amount of electrolysis and how eaten up those drives are, 110 volts was leaking into the water from this boat or an adjacent vessel. Make sure all bonding wires (usually heavy green wire) are attached to all thru-hull fittings, engines, etc.

Nice boat Out drives Will do that If you're sacrificial anodes are not replaced regularly and those out drives can easily be replaced with used or new units . and if you disconnect the out drives it might be easier to turn the engine over but first make sure there no water in oil pan then put some transition fluid in the cylinders to soak loose any stuck rings .wile to disconnect the out drives . Great boat you can always get your money out any time you want

I’d like to see you guys rebuild it if the hull is good. Probably would take a bath on resale, like with all boats. I would also love to see someone change the motors over to diesel. Sometimes you have to p/ up & drop outdr several times ! But it will seperate from transom

I have a large boat and its great but its a lot of work and expensive. Your $350 boat is a cool challenge, but know your limits. This is probably not something you can fix and flip, but making vids of fixing it would get you loads of new subs. Even if the engines are resurrectable, youre still likely to need over $10k to make this a runner. Just assume you will end up needing 3x the time and money you think you will need. The good here is that Bayliner parts are easy to find and you're only in about $1k, no slip fees or accruing costs. As others have said, if the engines can be turned over and started, you might have a good investment or a cool boat to share with friends and family. Im taking my fam out on mine to see the eclipse on 4/8. So cool. I am Living the Dream.

    Jeeezzz Boyz.
    1. Disconnect the stern drives as they may be frozen with corrosion. Common problem, easy fix with a few new parts.
    2. Pull the plugs and fog the cylinders with oil or ATF.
    3. Crank it.
    4. If they turn, compression check on all the cylinders.
    4. If they turn, put the plugs back in and see if the motors run.
    5. If they run and you've got an uncle named Bob, well, there's your sign.
    6. If they don't turn, you've got a couple more anchors.

If, and that is a big IF, you decide to work on this it will be a winter time project. The interior does not look too bad, take out everything, see how sturdy the wood is. It still is a small interior. Engines need to be replaced, all of it, engines, drives the whole shebang. It will be a 20k job, that is for sure. But don't expect to get it in the water anytime soon. Or just part it out, sell it as is, who knows.

I think your engines are probably ok. Need to take the outdirives off and then try to turn over engines. It looks like some type of electrical current was running thru and caused severe electrolysis on the outdrives, eating them up. I also think your water is probably fresh water from rain collection versus being under water in salt. My .02 worth.

Pull plugs / fill with diesel / open carb fill with diesel / let sit at least 24 hrs. / Then see if Mt will loosen
Never try to turn a mt over dry !!

If you want to use the boat yourself, and you are willing to spend a decent amount of money and work into it: keep it.
Else: clean it up, if possible get the engines going, and pass it on for a profit.

pull the engines and rebuild them them both...do a collab video with that engine shop that does videos on you tube that way you both get views and can use the videos to help pay for the rebuilds...and while your having the engines rebuilt you do the rest of the repairs and clean up on the boat...

Would you consider switching over to outboard motors, you are going to have to buy two out drive units for sure.
