- There are a lot of opinions about orientation of the Garmin PS30 Panoptix transducer amongst us anglers, I know because I tried to research before I purchased. There was not a lot of information on the subject. I installed the PS30 in the flipped orientation!
In this video I show screen shots, short videos and my opinion. Like I said there are lots of opinions, therefore this is all user preference. These are my opinions.
I also added a BONUS tip on how to get rid of the that annoying sonar history side panel from the LiveVu down screen. - กีฬา

Thank you for the feedback! You are correct, I watch the Panoptix display more than the traditional sonar; like I mean all the time lol. Fish show up well before the traditional picks them up

Glad I could help. Panoptix has changed the was we fish for salmon, coho's and bow's, that's for sure.

@@captcrow I hope so. Just switched from Lowrance to Garmin, and i`m having a hrd time getting them dialed in to my likings. Just have to put the hours in on them i geuss.
Hi Capt Crow, As I understand it, you can also see 90 degrees from the view you showed but it's only 45 degrees wide or so. if that's true, can you see your divers? If you can, have you gotten a feel for how far horizontally the divers run from the boat? Thanks
Scott I can not see the divers with my set up. We run our drivers between 150-230 ft of line out. Works great on the riggers and sliders. I am curious if the new livescope transducer lvs64 will be new toy for deep salmon trolling this season? Thanks for the question.
We have it in our boat - changed the transducer configuration to the "flipped" position last Summer. Definitely fun to watch, but I'm curious what changes to lures, etc people have made as a result of the feedback and did it equate to more bites?
Hey Robert, thanks for watching my video and for the comments and question, I appreciate your feedback.
A couple things that I can comment on regarding Panoptix for trolling: I like that I can see the fish approaching the boat vs the std sonar which basically shows what has passed under us. Ex: If we see the fish at 60ft depth and not coming up to 45ft to our presentation, well then we need to change our presentation depth to where the fish are. I have seen fish following our presentations and take note on how they react. I can speed up or slow down, or we can drop the rigger by 3-5ft and see what he does in real time. I cant see that on 2D sonar. With the wider view of the panoptixs, I can see a larger sample of lake (120ft) and note if bait or fish are present. 2D does the same but not in same sample size. My panoptix is showing approaching bait and fish well before the 2D.
Now you mentioned fun! I have found my 1st mate and guests are looking fwd at the echomap more than they should be and not watching rods, so this winter I bought an ultra 106sv to mount at the stern so I can get them looking the right direction. It does provide a sense of entertainment so I want them all to enjoy it but looking at the stern where the rods are lol! We will see how this goes in 2023.
I think every season we run panoptix we will get more familiar with what we are seeing and how we should react. It's all about experience and we are going on year 2 with Garmin.
I have a question for you: When you say you changed the configuration to flipped, did you run it in the std orientation or just start in flipped? Curious if you had a preference. Thanks
@@captcrow To be honest we really didn't use it that much in the regular position. Started reading articles where anglers were discussing the flipped position with the PS31 bracket, and started using it heavily. Another charter captain considered it a game changer which really sparked my curiosity. Now getting fish to react is another story... we've tried slowing down/speeding up, raising/lowering the cannon ball, etc. Haven't triggered an additional bite, but it's definitely fun watching them come in and react to the ball. Which brings up another point - maybe my lures are too far back. The only thing I've ran pretty close to the ball are flasher/fly combos. I'll need to experiment more with lead lengths this coming season.

Our ps30 hangs down about 1.5" below the bottom of the boat. We get a good display when running. The RyTek mount is approx 6" from the top of mount to the bottom of boat. I haven't noticed a rooster tail when on plane but I also have a 24" deck on the back of the boat which may knock it down if there is one. I hope this helps you out

Question with the flipped installation of the PS30, did you have to make any setting changes ? I will be installing mine in the flipped orientation and the display unit at the back of the boat.
Hey John, that's a good question. I can't really remember since I have been off the water since fall but we will be launching in a couple weeks and I will be able to double check the 9" settings, plus I may have to setup the new 10". The only thing I might have had to do was mirror the screen so that the image was moving right to left representing bow to stern. The other thing I did that took me half the season to figure out was to take a sonar overlay off the left side of the screen. I hope your installation goes well and you enjoy the new view. I've been looking at the PS30 for a while and debating flipped vs standard so this is extremely helpful. Thanks. If you get a second one like you mentioned maybe you could mount that one "normally" so you would have a full port/starboard and fore/aft scan. For vertical jigging with multiple anglers in the boat (what I want it for) flipped seems to be the better option in my opinion. However the tradeoff is not being able to tell which side of the boat the fish is on as you said. Decisions decisions
Thanks for the kind feedback. I bought a second display, a echomap ultra 10" vs thge uhd 9" to mirror same sonar from ps30. Sorry for the confusion. I would think that if your jigging off the side of boat either orientation will cover the area under the boat. Thanks again and I am glad this video helped. There wasn't many out there when I was trying to decide.
@@captcrow Oh I see. Thanks for clarifying that. I did have another question for you actually. When you bought the PS30 did it come with the bracket to mount it flipped? Or did you have to buy an after market bracket?
The PS30 transducer comes with a traditional mounting bracket, but if you want the flipped orientation, visit RyTek Marine, Ryan makes awesome brackets, all heavy gauge s.s. Do you use your ps30 flipped to make QuickDraw contours?
If so are they accurate since the graph doesn't know the transducer is flipped?
Hey Brandon, thanks for the question. No I don't use it for contours. We fish Lake Ontario and she is pretty flat with a gradual drop. I use my Lowrance hds for traditional sonar and mapping. Garmin's are 100% Panoptix. I hope that helps. Stay safe and happy fishing

We strictly troll for Kings, we have never jigged however from my experience with our ps30 setup I would choose standard orientation which covers both starboard and port side. I do think both orientations would cover for jigging. Good luck and enjoy you panoptics.
Are your Quick Draw Contours still accurate with it flipped? (When you make your own maps)
Brandon I don't use the panoptix ps30 transducer for mapping therefore I can't answer your question. Sorry

Mapping with 12" lowarance hds carbon using a Airmar TM185HW 1kw transducer
How would this work for shallow water trolling 12-18’
Hey Tim, thanks for the question and thanks for watching the video. I will be honest with you, we don't fish water that shallow so I can't give you any opinion. However, in 4 weeks with be launching and trolling for early browns, bows and salmon but I don't expect the water to get skinnier than 20-30 feet at the Niagara bar. My comfort level just isn't there to run in shallow waters that I'm not 100% knowledgeable in. We only fish this area for 4 weeks a year. If I can get you some info on how it works out for us in our skinny water, I will add to this comment. Be safe
