Hey Paul, I noticed lately that if you put the timestamps in the description they create these "video chapters." (The trick is to also use *0:00* or it won't work) Thanks for the awesome videos.
I really love that you don’t just teach how to play the lick, but take a little time to explain why it works. A little theory and perspective towards the musicality of the riff goes a long way towards helping us viewers to create our own inspired licks! That makes your approach to these videos so great. Good stuff!
What I was thinking listening to and trying to play with my guitar. Not just: play the fourth fret on the second string etc. But: this note is the major third cause the choard is major and son on
Totally agree! Knowing why you can play the lick makes it useful to use your playing later. Paul is a fantastic teacher! And extremely knowledgeable! So grateful for his videos
What nice licks, Paul! I ( 73 ) play and love my guitar(s) since 65 years. Still pure joy, fascination and constant learning. In addition, your slightly nederlands accent: Wonderful! Keep it up!
Why do I enjoy listening to you talk as much as I enjoy listening to your playing? You have such an elegant style of both! The videography of your videos is admirable. I love the ambient light and slight blur of the background. Just really enjoy everything about your videos. Thank you for your time and effort making these.
Paul, I rarely write comments. but man self taught guitar player- couple open mics, couple jam sessions, not bad not great. but all your videos have helped me immensely expand my vocabulary and more importantly my feel. I absolutely love your content- I feel like a lot of TH-camrs gravitate towards gear reviews and well those are cool , i watch my fair share. but your lessons man they help me learn to say something on guitar. baby gibberish but you've help promote me to toddler talk lol thanks a mill
(For the younger players), THIS is probably the exact video Jerry Garcia would've clicked on, had the internet been around longer than 4 years before his death. I was a metal head, and J'j'j'j'Jerry set me Free! Play the way THAT DAY feels! Garcia is where Blues, and blue Grass meet. Excellent video, to teach something, is to learn it twice.
Thank you for actually explaining why certain chords work, I’ve been playing guitar for 5 years , but just this year I’ve been diving deeper to actually know how to make something sound bluesy or jazzy. Your videos have helped a lot:)
I just played my first lick ever!! Thank you so much for this, for you patient explanation, and for encouraging me to play and learn more. You also have the best demeanor, I really appreciate your videos.
In the age of 67 yo, I just got an extra layer in my playing style, I can use right away. Thank you so much for your choice teaching students - over choosing using your obvious skills playing in yet a classy Ducth band known Worldwide. You deserve so much respect for that - and your patient teaching technique. Greets from Denmark 🎸🤏🏻🙏🏻
This video just hits the spot. Also can’t believe that perfect Strat tone. It’s clean, a little crunchy, crispy and still warm. Sounds like the guitar is actually sizzling.
Amazing Paul... Great licks and awesome insights, as always. "We're creating a Gsus4", "This A is my reference point", "It's the same thing just an octave lower"... Those seemingly insignificant statements are gold. Thank you.
Yes Paul, this is just what I needed! Started a channel and have begun documenting my progress with a “Blues solo a day”. Will be giving these a try later when I can concentrate 😂 distracted with Fuzz pedals right now.
I was going to practice "Stormy Mondays" and "The Thrill is Gone", 45 minutes later I'm still playing around with these. Seriously, I appreciate the way you explain the note choices (this is the flat third, this is the ninth, etc) it really helps me understand why those notes sound like they do, why you chose them, and how to change them if I want to move the lick from major to minor or vice versa. My theory knowledge is burgeoning, but this lesson helped me identify where those notes are in the lick itself instead of just in the scale. It made it click.
Over the years of my musical journey so far I have realized that learning songs with interesting licks works better than learning standalone licks. It helps to internalize the licks better and integrate those within my improvisational playing. I used to learn standalone licks like these before and forget them soon without applying or internalizing much. Songs also help more since you learn the chords and your ears get familiar with the application of various licks with the chord changes. Learning songs or a complete piece of music is a lot better option than learning secluded things. Not sure how many think so, but that's how it is at least for me!
You may be right, or wrong. I feel like everyone sees it differently. But doesn't really matter as long as you get there in your head. Guitar is hard. Lol
The idea is to have fun in the process of learning. There's no end to technicalities or theories more so with fancy overwhelming videos floating around making it look hard or harder than it actually is supposed to be!
I picked up my guitar this morning and I didn't know what to play. Then I stumbled upon this video and I had so much fun learning these licks. Thank you!!!
Coming always to learn from Paul’s warming teachings but even knowing how sweet he teach us, never ceases to amaze me how much effort he makes every single time. Bravo Paul!
Paul's videos are more than just lessons. They are pieces of film in their own right. The attention to detail, like soothing lighting, really put the student in a calm mindset. I now cite my influences as...Mayer, Slash, Sambora, KWS, Davids 😂
I was recommended here by the good chaps @thatpedalshow. This is the first video I watched. Thanks for the lessons and I have a feeling I'll be scouring the archives for months to come!
I got most of these I'm gonna learn all of these....Couple guys on youtube who have good videos...I watch these because it's more then learned guitar....And if I'm gonna pick up phrasing habits I want it to be from someone in tune with the music. That's important.... Like rule one of guitar you should be able to feel what you play. You get one part down that should bring you excitement.... Guitar is like medicine for me.
After 20 years of playing I feel like sweep picking is finally a possibility I can see on the horizon - do you have advice for a reasonable competent player who just can't get his head, or fingers, round sweep picking? Great videos, by the way. I really enjoy your channel!
go slow, mute the previous string with the next finger to keep them crisp and not lose the whole effect in muddiness. starting on A (5th) string: 7h10/9/9/8/7/10p7 --and continue back down. you can add in a second pull off or even a tap to extend it if you want. even though you're going slow, don't pick them normally, allow the pick to fall through the string into the next string. palm mute as desired, but also because it's easier for your right hand on those first couple strings. typically the first few notes palm muted sound good. I found this particular arpeggio helpful for learning them. edit: the two 9s are done by rolling your index finger slightly. this is the hardest part but is a useful thing to master
That C/G back to G at the end of Lick #2 is what can be heard in Southern Baptist churches in the "A-men" at the end of singing a hymn. So you've got the Bluegrass thang leading straight into church. Keep it up and we'll make you an honorary North Carolinian.
Paul, these are excellent licks. They belie what is really going on here. You've created and alluded to a very major-minor sound that is unique to the blues style. Additionally, these licks work best when transitioning between chords. I've found in my studies that the I likes to be Major and the IV and V are minor in the blues. That epiphany changed how I approach lick development; some licks are the I, some are the IV/V, and some help transition the ear between the sounds. Your licks develop such a strong tonic pull that I found myself yearning for the resolution! Again, awesome job at helping people hear what makes the blues unique!
If only you and the Internet had been around in 1969, I would have become a much better player way sooner! You’re an excellent instructor and I’m sure a monster player onstage! Great feel for the guitar!

I tried fruitlessly to play lick 5 the way you described it. Then I slowed down the track and see you aren't pulling off 5-3 on the B, G, and D string. You're pulling off 5-3 B, hitting 3 on G, and pulling off and hammering 5-3-5 on D. Now it makes sense.

Just my problem. How about a series on that? Psychology, technique, repertoire, and gamesmanship of

Without being banned for the usual common riffs/ licks..👍🤘🎸
