I was in Prison in new york, in 2016 and had this on Cassette tape, this was one of my favorite albums, it's thematic and every track goes together from skits to the hit singles, It's a movie that you could play in one shot. I recommend it.

This is going to be very long and I'm not sure if anyone will take the time to read it, but this is one of my favorite Kendrick Lamar songs (and one of my favorite songs period) so I do want to talk about why I think it's so good.
I don't the point of Kendrick's song is whether or not to "retaliate with violence," or at least that's not the whole picture. I think the song is meant to be a sort of snapshot of the continuous cycle of loss in Compton, where Kendrick grew up.
The song has two parts, "Sing About Me," and "I'm Dying of Thirst." In "Sing About Me," Kendrick takes the perspective of two other people: the brother of his friend Dave (Dave was shot and killed at the end of the song "Swimming Pools (Drank)"), and a sex worker (who is the sister of "Keisha" from the song "Keisha's Song (Her Pain)" on Kendrick's previous album Section.80. Keisha was a prostitute who was raped and killed by a client). Dave's brother plans on seeking revenge for Dave's murder, even though he knows he's only continuing the cycle of violence in his community, a cycle made very apparent when his verse is abruptly cut and we hear the gunshots that killed him ("and if I die before your album drop I hope-*gunshots*"). Because he knows what his actions will lead to he wants Kendrick to ensure he isn't forgotten. Keisha's sister takes a stance opposite of Dave's brother. She's angry at Kendrick for making a song about Keisha, and doesn't want Kendrick to write more songs about her and her family as Kendrick doesn't truly understand what it's like to be pushed into being a prostitute just to survive. She ends her verse with a refrain of "never fade away I'll never fade away I'll never fade away" as her verse slowly fades out. From lines earlier in the verse we can assume she was killed by an STI contracted from her line of work. Another death caused by the conditions of her community, even if it's less direct than being shot.
In "I'm Dying of Thirst," Kendrick continues the scene that is built across the whole of Good Kid, m.A.A.d city. Kendrick and his friends are scrambling to figure out what to do after Dave is shot and killed. Kendrick has five shorter verses on this half of the track where he continues to describe the violence in Compton and how he is caught in the middle of it. I think the point here is that it doesn't really matter how involved someone is in gang violence: the social and material conditions of their community allow very few people to make it out unscathed. I think that's why Kendrick writes the songs he does. Kendrick feels he escaped the cycle of death by finding God, but knows that the realities of life in Compton can't change through the actions of individuals. The stories Kendrick tells are less about individual legacies and more about sharing the lives of people who are so often overlooked.
Ultimately I believe Kendrick Lamar is very much an album artist. I think taking the time to listen through an entire record and really pay attention to the story he's weaving throughout will give you a lot more insight into why Kendrick is so respected as an artist (and why he won a Pulitzer Prize for DAMN. in 2017).

I truly appreciate you taking the time to give them a deeper dive into the complexities of K dots pov. He creates with so much depth of meaning that I feel so much gets lost in translation. The beauty in that is over time more gems may be found if people come back to it or grow deeper understanding of life as they grow up.

Start incorporating pauses and breaks in your videos or TH-cam will take them down once you get more views. If the song can be played basically all the way through on your video with minimal breaks and pauses then it is basically stealing (in their eyes) because someone could listen to this for free and have the same experience as they would listening to the song. It also helps the other family members give input during the reaction vidie

If they’re like my parents, they’re gonna say the generic “Tupac or Biggie was the best!” Sorry, they died young. Move on, it’s 30 years later, find more hip hop like damn.

A bit of a silly logic, I do think old heads overrate older artists but without their impact we wouldn’t have the artists we do today. Tupac had an insanely positive impact on hip hop and Biggie is one of the best lyricists of all time. K dot is the goat tho so I get your point, it’s okay to listen to only old skool but you’re missing out on a lot.

@@radiofoot1035 You’re definitely right, and actually have an argument besides “I’m older, I’m right”. Lot of respect for you just for that. I’ve listened to a lot of Big and Nas plus earlier stuff, but Tupac just doesn’t capture me like them or others for some reason.

@@kdog5471 ay same bro. I think 2Pac is definitely one of the more overrated artists at least technically and from an artist perspective, but he was one of the first conscious rappers/activists to really have a massive impact not only in their music but in the streets too. Things that are bigger than how good an album is, because it makes the lyrics absolutely real and impactful (especially to the lower class P.O.C. of the 90s).K dot took a lot of influence from pacs activism/storytelling and elevated it in almost every way in my opinion, but whose to say we would even have K dot at all without 2Pac.
