Bringing A Trashed Arctic Cat El Tigre Back To Life

  • I found this neglected snowmobile on Craigslist for $150. So I loaded it up and brought it home. In this video, I repair it.
    I had to bypass the TSS and replace the CDI.
    This snowmobile also needed its entire fuel system cleaned including the carbs, the fuel pump, the fuel lines, and the fuel tank.

      You should be premixing the gas at 20 to 1 ratio. 50 to 1 is to lean and you will destroy your crank shaft and piston skirts.

    Boy do I remember those days when I was young and could not afford a good snowmobile I worked on them for hours and hours just like you did to get the damn things running but what a good feeling when you do get it working and in the long run you're only becoming more mechanically inclined. Good for you...

    So in my years of wrenching on these, a resistor like that is never part of the ignition circuit. Usually it's used in the hot grips/thumb warmer circuit. and it did look like wires running to the throttle. In later models the TPS switch isn't in the throttle itself, but is inside the piece the throttle connects to mounted on the handle bar and uses three wires, connected to a plug. usually shares the same wire as the kill switch. One common wire, and one for TPS and one for kill switch. Common to just get unplugged when TPS fails, but causes kill switch to not work, unless you wire it out. Another giveaway for hand grips/thumb warmer is the switch wired in, which one could be seen tied to that wiring. Cool old ride though, keep that radiator clean, those 530's were known for overheating but were screamers....

    For the 20:1 ratio guys the oils have improved dramatically over the years . That is why you see 40:1 or 50:1 . 40:1 is perfect . And everyone is so scared dumping a shot of either in the cylinders . Anything running on gasoline handles either like a shot of candy .
    It is used to coax a diesel to life ... that’s where you gotta watch things ... it’s more like a snort of cocaine for a diesel . Big difference !

    RUN AWAY! I bought a 1988 Wild Cat. Big POS. Check to make sure the lighting coil is not wired in series with the regular coil like mine was. I had FITS trying to figure out why the hell mine wouldnt work even with a brand new CDI. After messing with it and having it cut out for no reason. Someone told me the damn thing was wired in series with the saftey cut out switch and the lighting coil. They were 100% correct. After fixing my problem that took me most of the winter to figure out. I rebuilt the engine, new track, shit loads of money later. On a 600 mile ride in the UP of Michigan, it sucked a reed and destroyed a cylinder. After all my work. Replace those reeds with carbon fiber so it will not do that. I went to Skidoo after that and have been a happy camper every since. I went on to opening my own repair shop eventually. I mostly did Artic cat, Polaris and Yamaha.

    How did you siphon out the gas?

    • @keving.4020
      @keving.4020 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can do this with a air hose and a piece of fuel line, hose, etc.. laying around. Blow air into the tank while sealing around the air hose with a rag so no air can escape. In essence, the gas will exit through the line,( hose or whatever you use to drain the tank.) the pressure from your air hose blowing air in the tank will force the fuel out the only exit available, hence the fuel line, garden hose.

    Your running way to fat , Change the jets to maybe a 150 ,Find out thru GPS what altitude your place is at then get the jets to suit the machine if your jets are to big it`ll smoke if to small hard starting and run way to lean watch the plugs if really dark it`s fat to big if white or grey always watch for silver spots that`s the piston melting use bigger jets , The plugs should be buckskin color Tan Makes a giant difference some Artic cat belt guards have a guide for your jets ,Just turn the carbs upside down unscrew the big nut remove the brass jet ,,Buy 3-4 different ones if you have big hills a giant drop in altitude will crater that engine if not getting enough oil to engine jugs running premixed fuels .I ran A-Cat for years .Best way to check plugs is get machine hot , Run under load fast as you can for 200 ft or more TURN KEY OFF AT HIGH REV LET STOP without lowering rev this says what the plugs just got at peak performance adjust from there .You might get away just moving the E clip on the jet needle too up 1 notch this will lean the fuel at micro setting when your at one end of the slots and needs more change jet up or down needle should be center .
