Composer and music legend Rick Wakeman joins Simon Mayo for their annual Christmas get together. In a special edition of Simon's Drivetime Show on Greatest Hits Radio, Rick joins Simon and Matt Williams to talk about Christmas and play some of our festive favourites. This is the All Rick-Quest Christmas with Rick Wakeman.
Rick plays the Christmas hit Fairytale of New York and performs songs from David Bowie. He also chats with Simon about Christmas traditions and hears a very awkward Confession live!

Rick Wakeman: a one man band of enormous talent with a sense of humour to match!
National Treasure is over used these days but this man is one, utter genius.
As a child growing up in the sixties and seventies, Rick was my hero and to this day, I remain in awe of his incredible musicianship and wonderful humanity.
Thank you Rick for playing for us. You are a brilliant pianist and fantastic company.
I really had a crap day dealing with miserable customers but the performance from Rick made that day so much better thanks Simon & team
It makes me very happy that Rick is still with us when so many of his great contemporaries have and are leaving us so quickly these days. His talent and sense of humor is very needed in these crazy times. I can only wish to have Rick with us for many more years. Thanks for all the years of great music.
I can't believe that there's anyone out there that can't recognize Rick Wakeman's wonderful distinctive style. First saw him live at Leeds University May 1976.
The No Earthly Connection Tour with the English Rock Ensemble..i still have my programme from Hammersmith Odeon April 76 and showed Rick several years ago and as he signed it he remarked how bloody long ago it was…i’m glad you saw it to in Leeds also…for me there is only one God and he wears a cape 🥳
Space Oddity brought a little tear to my eye, I’ll admit. Beautifully played.
What about the hook on Get it on, T Rex, I was a bass player struggling to play it when a guy told me, that’s played on a keyboard by Rick, He was paid £9.00 for that session.
There's a few albums of him doing covers and Space Oddity is on the first one, Piano Portraits. I highly recommend the album.
It's so good to see Rick playing the piano ...
He IS the best! The Mozart of our time. I love this man.
Love Rick Wakeman. His playing, his humour, his stories his general disposition. Oh and he was with the best prog band ever, Yes. Seen him many times live in various incarnations, and always love what I hear.
38:26 Bowie sent shivers & a tear ... left like I was in the same room. Transporting. Pure Joy ... thankyou Rick.
Wonderful. As a big Yes fan, it is fantastic to hear Rick here. I really love Rick. He is my favourite keyboard player. Grateful he is still alive and well and playing.
An absolute legend Rick Wakeman brilliant 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
The mans a legend, you need to read his autobiography, funniest book ive ever read , simply brilliant and I'm not even a yes fan lol
Lovely to say hello and shake hands with Rick in the audience at the pantomime Black Beauty Ipswich Regent theatre on 29 December. Great panto.
Sweetest, funniest man in all of rock (as well as a rather good pianist). Seems he's developed a bit of a tic - hope it's nothing serious. Loved his little "And a Happy New Year!" right at the end!
There are very very very very few who can play at this level 🎶🎶🎶🎶🙏🙏🙏 and many many many many who just listen and enjoy ..🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🙏🙏🙏
Well done Rick........genius !!!
Rick Wakeman! 🙌
I was listening to this when it went out on air. I kind of stumbled across it by accident and started listening. It was the best bit of radio I've listened to in a long, long time. Congratulations to Rick, Simon and all who contributed to the production.
I saw Rick a couple of yrs ago at G Live in Guildford, amazingly funny guy and THE best piano playing I've ever heard in my life.
Space Oddity, Mozart dressed up as Major Tom: lush, layered and luminous, from the hands of Rick Wakeman. The man is in his prime, same as it ever was. Rick&Chris, In The Round, is the Greatest Show On Earth. Great music is the only thing that never, ever disappoints us, never lets us down.
Nice to see you Rick. Merry Christmas.
I read an autobiography of Rick's a few years back. Have never laughed so much reading through all his ups and downs. Brilliant musician and genuine bloke.
Wonderful playing as ever from Rick looking forward to seeing him in 2024
really enjoyed Wonderous Stories - always feels Christmassy and some nice improv Rick. Well done Mel for admitting to falling asleep during King Arthur on Ice -you should have ordered a curry to wake yourself up- eh Rick🤣
18:20 loved hearing about Rick's Christmas
Still got it Rick
Magicman Rick, simply beautiful

Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Been saving this till having the time to really let it play. Such a delayed treat to hear Rick and Simon and Matt after the catastrophic radio two debacle.. Three cheers to proper piano joy. Thanks you Mr Wakeman
Bloody brilliant!
9:47 Great Howard Blake story from Rick.
12:35 "Tipped the wink" -delightful
It’s a gift that he works to constantly improve on. Thank you for this video.
Mayo really is the consummate broadcaster.
Pairing him with Jo Wiley (both great on there own, terrible together) and realising it didn't work and getting rid of him was worst decision Radio 2 ever made.
Much happier on GHR.
Brilliant thanks
Should have asked him about when Marc Bolan heard he needed £15 for his rent. Marc got him to play on Get it On he told Marc you don't need me you could play that. Marc said to him you need you rent money don't you, remember Rick telling that story years ago.
❤
Knighthood for Rick NOW.....
4:54 Great question about twiddley bits
He did some great session work on T Rex records.
Adeste Fideles, awesome!
2:48 "Especially if I wrong" from Rick W !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His glasses don't fit - he's doing the 'old guy' think down to a tee ... love him.
Great sounding piano and for once I dont think its a Yamaha, maybe Steinway?
Rick wakeman,legend 🤟
how cool to rent rick out for a party
LEGEND !!!!!!!!!!
😊
Aren’t they called trills?
Excellent brilliant!!
Rick Wakeman is looking more like George Roper (Brian Murphy) every day. Mildred!!!
More like Jack Hargreaves (Out of Town).
Picaretagem explicita
Ohh another mason
Listening to Rick is like listening to Mariah Carey singing....all that screeching and whaling distracts you from the song.....if you know what I mean😉🤣
No I don't. Sounds insulting.
And the biggest twat comment of 2023 goes to ....
@@no-oneman.4140 obviously you don't know what I mean then😉
@@74quoperhaps you could explain a little more on what you mean?
@@MuppetOne already explained 😉👍
The same songs sound like this! What a cheesy false radio shite company far too ad breaks n dawn French and 60s sounding jingles before ads
Bang on
'The same songs sound like this' - eh?
No same song not like sound. True company like no day this day and adverts with music jingle bells and same. Is it? Abusive comments welcome in this also.
Watched this all the way through and never got an ad break, as for songs I never heard any. Maybe you are working for the dark side (BBC) and this station has taken all your listeners
The only cheesy thing here is your blocked ears, you little bastard!
I celebrate Mr. Wakeman's excellent rendition of Greg Lake's classic “I Belive in Father Christmas.” Thank you
They rang me as I suggested it but the phone call has been cut out of the TH-cam broadcast but it’s on the radio version on GHR. 😢
@@MuppetOne Paula, we should talk about this with a Malbec in Paris…
