I really wondered where the tone for arriving somewhere live came from, absolutely loved it. I prefer the tone from this over the full head cab tone you guys had after 07
Thank Mateo! Missed you guys up north by one day, but saw Dave, hope things are well with you. You have an amazing collection as well, hope you dig the channel. What color is Shawns Bad Cat? rock!
I'm almost positive that's my old amp! I sold it to someone in Florida about 2 years ago. Serial number is 2219. I owned it for a long time and had it on many stages, lots of good memories.
By the way...the "Followed Me Home" is a wonderful discovery. Such phenomena in nature are valuable. Thank you John with all my heart. I decided to try it on a PRS model with a tremolo bridge and piezo.
Hey John, just found your channel. And what a great episode to start with! I love the Bad Cat Hot Cat, and really appreciated the way you and Steve made those Bad Cat's sing. I was fortunate enough to see PT twice in the early 2000's and you guys were amazing live. Great intro on this amp followed by a nice demo. Look forward to seeing and hearing more from you on this channel.
Man! I had a 2x12 Black Cat 30 from around that time in the coolest looking purple sparkle. I don't regret many amps I've sold off but I sure do miss that one in particular. That red is killer!
Awesome story/awesome video/great tones...thanks, John! I know Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders got on board with BadCat not too long ago. Quick unrelated question...what watch are you wearing here?
Thanks for making this. I too played the Sampson era hot cats for a long time. I had a 30 and 100 back then. The tone at 19:25 when you first start playing- that’s THE sound to me. Of course I sold those amps(stupid!) but I have a 30r that I picked up dirt cheap several years back. Anyway, thanks again for taking me down memory lane with such a great amp.
Funny how similar our stories are, with the exception of the whole Porcupine Tree gig thing 😅 I had a Sampson-era Hot Cat 30 around 2008 that I had purchased second hand. As things go, I ended up selling it, but that sound stuck with me. Haunted me for years, actually. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to acquire a Sampson-era Hot Cat 30R. So happy to have that sound back. Nothing like it.
I think new gear is important for us as guitar players. It inspires us to explore new sounds. Even going back to something we haven't played in a while can give us a new approach to finding a good sound.
The Hot Cat is a Class A amp and has some of that Class A "cut" to it, kind of unique. The Lynx is more traditional Marshall style and is slightly thicker. A good comparison is the Porcupine Tree live videos, Arriving Somewhere from 2005 are two Hot Cats, Anesthetize from 07 are two Lynx Heads on 4x12's, I was running Marshalls at that time, but for that run of shows I used Steve's spare Lynx head. Truthfully they both sound amazing, but again, the class A verses a non class A thing. The Lynx even has really great cleans, just different.
The stiffness is more to do with how the power section is designed, not the transformer. This has the tube rectifier option also, so that would not be still it would be saggy if anything. There are other factors but stiffness isnt inherently a characteristic of a big transformer.
@@TheJourneymanGuitarist A reply straight from the man himself! Thanks, John. Love your channel. Was a real "WHAT?!" moment last summer when I saw you take the stage with Vertical Horizon at Cain Park in Cleveland, OH. I had lost track of you after enjoying your playing/singing during the PT years and was psyched to see you with Matt et al. Just wish you guys had more than 25-30 minutes on that tour... you guys killed it.
Really enjoyed this one. I recently dusted off my black Hot Cat from the same era. I 'm looking at different ways to attenuate or re-amp it because it's so freaking loud. Here is a great demo of this amp th-cam.com/video/DIiwz--tbmc/w-d-xo.html.

That red Bad Cat is a Beautiful amp!!! So cool!! Great channel here bro, stoked that I found it. Shawn Scheller’s Bad Cat sounds amazing. Mateo

@ things are great brother! His is black. He’s using it with the Porcupine Tree road case too.. perfect!!

Just checked and it most certainly is! Amazing amp!!
By the way...the "Followed Me Home" is a wonderful discovery. Such phenomena in nature are valuable. Thank you John with all my heart. I decided to try it on a PRS model with a tremolo bridge and piezo.

Purple Sparkle?? Wow..I bet that was amazing!
I worked for them at that time, excellent amps!!!
Amazing... wow, what a great thing to be a part of!
@ it was long ago but I may have sold Steven his amp, I recall selling to PTree
Awesome story/awesome video/great tones...thanks, John! I know Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders got on board with BadCat not too long ago. Quick unrelated question...what watch are you wearing here?
Sub 41…. 124060. A fellow traveler I see??!

That is amazing... it really is its own thing and in a way that is so useful. So happy you were able to get one back as well!!!
Sounds good
Love it...thanks man.

I one hundred percent agree...
You gonna capture it into the Quad Cortex?
Someday, when I get some time!
Curious what you thought of the Hot Cat 30 vs the Lynx 50?
The Hot Cat is a Class A amp and has some of that Class A "cut" to it, kind of unique. The Lynx is more traditional Marshall style and is slightly thicker. A good comparison is the Porcupine Tree live videos, Arriving Somewhere from 2005 are two Hot Cats, Anesthetize from 07 are two Lynx Heads on 4x12's, I was running Marshalls at that time, but for that run of shows I used Steve's spare Lynx head. My biggest fear is that when I die, my wife sells my gear for what I told her I paid for them. I got one in 2008, Hot Cat 30R in red :)
yeah, 100 bucks for a hot cat... honey... it might have been worth a few pennies more??!!
"Sparkles" sounds like she could have worked at Mons Venus in the 80s...😊
Might of dated her…. It was the 80s….
Always been curious about these. Does the big transformer make it stiff to play? That’s been my experience with a lot of large-transformer amps.
The stiffness is more to do with how the power section is designed, not the transformer. This has the tube rectifier option also, so that would not be still it would be saggy if anything. There are other factors but stiffness isnt inherently a characteristic of a big transformer.
Not stiff at all, its really feels like my old Marshalls but with it's own unique vibe, very playable and enjoyable even at low volume...

Wow, that is an amazing demo! Sounds amazing and killer playing...and on a Tyler!!!
Love the Sam Vilo video, still watch it regularly!
@ Me too!
I bet the qaud cortex sounds better!!?
The quad does sound wonderful, but it's a different thing, a good thing, but different, and it might weigh a bit less...!
