In 1963 a friend pointed out the dealer retrofitted top boost to his AC-30... Back then if I remember correctly was a small box with a switch or knob on it that was mounted on the top left hand side at the back of the amp. The small circuit stuck the the bottom of your example there looks about the same size. Fair bit of work to tidy that one up I recon Martyn.
Martyn, if you watch the most recent Psionic Audio Vox-repair video, he put in a plug for a comprehensive book on Vox amp repair techs, written by a guy named Stephen Grosvenor (in the UK I think). Contains pages upon pages of legible drawings and diagrams, explanations of Vox circuit changes/updates/mods and so on. Seems it'd be a worthwhile purchase if you want to be efficient at getting this Birch-Stolec Vox sorted out.....
Man, that amp looks and sounds like something the cat dragged in! I would estimate high on this one because the mess you can't see without pulling the chassis is likely even worse than what you've already seen.....
That thing is a mess! I don't know how you can give a repair estimate without taking it all apart. Hopefully we will get to see a restoration of this amp.
Hello Michael. If you remember we had one on the channel not long ago. I have the footage on that one so I know what the other side of the board looks like. The quote is for restore plus valves if needed, plus reverb tanks. It needs a full recap. The board looks okay on the soldering joint side. They guy is having a think about getting it done. Should know by the end of next week. Take care Michael.
