I remember reading a book about the development of VTOL aircraft. At one of the meetings, one engineer made the remark "Nothing comes down quicker than a VTOL upside down"
This aircraft was a part of the research that went into VTOL, another was the "flying bedstead" which I am sure came earlier. These aircraft were crucial in the development stage, but what made the whole thing a success was the vectored thrust engine. Edit to correct predictive text 😢
The only trick required with a VTOL aircraft, is using the same engine for both VTOL lift and horizontal flight! If you need additional engines, there goes your payload !
Brilliant video thank you for putting it up. But 2 things here. Firstly, another shining example of British Aircraft design and how advanced Britain was in that field back then. Secondly, another shining example about how far this country has sunk. We have had the worst most utter fools in charge of Britain since those days. They have taken between them, both Labour and the Tories, this country, this great nation as it once was, and stuffed it straight down the toilet. I always feel so sad when I see this stuff or go to a museum like Duxford or Brooklands. I enjoy it but it makes me so sad a bitter.

VTOL ! That will never catch on !😆Somehow it reminds me of a Bumble Bee !
The actual SC1 aircraft is now on display in the Ulster Fold and Transport museum at Cultra near Belfast, Northern Ireland.

You poor saps, the first English VTOL was Thunderbird 2, way ahead of its time.
Apologies, I'll correct the description!

That's why this country has gone to the dogs... we don't say "Orf' anymore.

VTOL! A useless idea for a military aircraft! It'll never be developed, an also ran! 😂😂
Except the Falklands.......pretty much gave us air superiority and saved countless marines.....so yeah VTOL was extremely useful
