Back in the 1980s 2 of us drove down to Baja for a fishing/ camping trip. Camped on the gulf side outside a town called in English, Bay of Angels. It was windy most the time and drinking water was precious. I left a couple of gallons in plastic jugs just outside the tent over night. In the morning coyotes had chewed through the plastic and drank all the water. Fishing was great! We caught lots of fish every day and ate lots of fish for dinner. We towed a small aluminum boat down there and one afternoon I pulled it up on the beach after fishing. Had all our fishing gear in it. In the morning it was gone! The tide or the wind took it out to sea. Looking out from the beach I saw small islands. Grabbed the binoculars and glassed over them real careful. Spotted a blue speck on one of them... the inside of the boat was blue! Nearby were fishing guides, I hired one and we headed out to that island that had the blue speck I saw. It was the boat! beached on the little island, with all the fishing gear still in it. We picked it up and put it in his boat and took it back to camp.
There is a rider to the tale. This boat was small. It was one of those aluminum boats that will fit one or 2 guys intended for fishing on lakes, not the Ocean! It had an outboard motor that moved us along. These large rolling swells were like driving up a hill, cresting at the top and going down the other side. It was not scary, but you felt so tiny out there! Then one day ( we were probably there 2 weeks total ) I see these whales breaking the surface! They were lumbering along heading north, and they were not that far away from us! Now, that was scary. I told Jack, let's get out of here! If one of them gets close enough we will capsize for certain! I do not think they were even aware of us, but there could have been others right under us for all I knew.
When ever we were sitting in the boat fishing close to shore we always had company. Pelicans! They would sit on the water, pretty close to us, just far enough away where we could toss them a fish we caught. Bobbing up and down on the surface, begging. You know that long forlorn looking face they have, complete with sad eyes. Well, they would put on their saddest looking face they could muster and wait for you to toss them a meal. Always be 4 or 5 of them in on the act.
Hey bro if you want to find some of the most beautiful beaches in Baja, that actually have a super calm clear blue water that is like a swimming pool, check out “Cabo Pulmo” and “Los Frailes.” It is on the eastern side of the bottom tip of Baja, so it is sheltered from the rough surf of the open Pacific. I think it is part of a national park. The landscape is so desolate and beautiful. It’s incredible over there. Just a couple hours from where you are. Los Cabos is really fun.
