- Tiny houses have become trendy in recent years, as people trade in traditional consumer lifestyles for a simpler option -- a living space that’s no more than 400 square feet. But in Detroit, these diminutive dwellings have a lofty goal: giving homeless and low-income people a chance at homeownership. Jeffrey Brown reports on Cass Community Social Services Tiny Homes Detroit project.
This needs to be done everywhere! These mini mansions popping up are unnecessary. Regular folks that work need an opportunity to have their own!

Tiny Homes Detroit is privately funded by individual and corporate donors. Tax dollars have not been used for the project.

And it is Biblical. Whatever we give to help others, we'll get back many times over...either spiritually, as in greater self-esteem, for example, or in lucky coincidences coming into our lives. there should be more developments like this all over the country, you should not have to make 6 figures and a double income just to live in a house.

C&B Scene I am disabled and on SSDI and SSI. I am from Jacksonville Florida. I don’t know how exactly I would handle the cold weather but I would love to try! I am not homeless but I could never afford a house on less than 800.00 a month. I would seriously love to apply to live there. Any information would be appreciated. 💙🙏😷😷😷😷😁
Rev Fowler is a hero and should be given an award for such a brilliant idea! Downsizing and building tiny homes is the way to go now in the 21st century, its affordable and can be easily maintained. This is exactly what every community needs to start - one community at a time solving the homeless/housing crisis. I think the homes are beautiful, manageable and sustainable. God bless you Rev Fowler, thank you for being a huge blessing to those in need around you. Let's pray that this can spread all the US and all over the world.

This is a great project. The house is not tiny at all. This is way bigger than most places on the world. Finally something is good for the community.
What I like about this initiative is that it's giving a counter-response to the slow gentrification of Detroit. Don't get me wrong, it would be super-cool to see the city spring back to life and be the cultural hub it once was, but you can't even begin to consider living downtown unless you have a lot of disposable income. Childless tech workers are flooding these downtown rentals. They don't have to worry about the school district, because they don't have kids, and the few who do can afford private schooling, and they all can afford to shell out thousands a month for a downtown loft. This is driving rental prices up, and pushing lower income people toward the outskirts of the city, and the issues perpetuated by a small percentage of those lower income people are moving right along with.
This initiative is a brilliant way of creating communities for lower income people without inviting the crime to join them. Lower income people don't deserve to live in dangerous areas simply because they do not earn enough to live in city centre. This may be a solution. At least, I hope so.
If i were millionaire i would do something like this for sure.

I agree, but it may be hard on small families who want to send their kids to school in a good school district. I think Detroit metro still struggles with this, and any family needing income assistance can't afford private schools unless their child earns a scholarship. And the charter schools are packed, it's hard to get your child into one.
They looking bigger from the inside, it’s nice.
These tiny homes is something we all need everywhere in the u.s. It is more conservative, has everything you need, less costs and more land space to build more homes for individuals. Talking about no more homelessness and more 💰 to save and actual home ownership.
Now this is a Tiny Home project worth feeling proud of. AT least these are big enough to turn around in unlike the 60 sq. ft boxes some are passing off as a home. God Bless those who took it a cut above to make the homeless feel human again. God Bless you for this.
I think the 60 sq ft homes have a purpose, and these larger tiny homes have a purpose. Different purposes. Of could people would choose the larger option IF THEY COULD.
Amazing program Rev Faith! Helping people to get back their dignity, out of poverty. All countries/governments should follow this program.

This is a normal sized house in our country. Its not quite "unimaginable" to live in a house of that size. Its all perception. These are really good looking homes.

In winter, when the sun sets early, you can't even rely on your windows to make it feel bigger.
They are nice. If they had a kitchen and bathroom I'd like to try and live in it
Indian homes are much the same size with seven members or more!middle class .

I am so thankful that Rev Faith has stepped out and started/foster this idea. People on lower income can not afford a house, or at times rent. Pride of ownership fosters growth personally. I am so thankful for this service, sign me up.
That kind of property is luxury from where I am.
These are neat I'd live in one. My place now is 1 tiny bedroom. These are bigger then my place and I pay $700 a month.
I need one of these. My house is bigger than what I need and with my illness I can't upkeep. This is nice, simple, and more manageable.
Sell your house and have one built for u.

This is so inspiring...practical...compassionate...logical...kind...beautiful...and giving people something to feel proud about, and to take pride in is CRUCIAL when they've all but had their pride taken from them living on the streets.
This appears to be a REAL community...not a cookie cutter, shed community with a bed and a roof over their head (which is better than a cardboard box, tent or dumpster). I can't wait to learn more about this community.

Well done Faith Fowler! Great concept well executed. I chose to done size and am loving it. (2500 sq.ft. to 750 sq ft) So much physical and financial burden lifted from my shoulders. Loving it! Way to go Detroit. Hope other cities will take note.

Of course, one can have a "middle class" income and still struggle to afford housing in the "Golden state"! Aww.........the greed!

Being low income myself, I'd love to see these in the capital city of Michigan, as well. We've bunked up with a friend's family after becoming homeless and have been working hard over a year to raise up enough to get our own place as it seems that something always happens where we have to dip a bit into our savings to get us by. But, we still have a long way to go. If this opportunity was available where I live, I'd love to snatch one up. Either way, it is a great idea for Detroit. I love it.
If this is on the up and up, I am very pleased. It will give people the chance to own their own home. Which brings ownership to the table. Something most low income people simply have given up on. I live in a low income community. Most, not all, but most of the residents figure this is their lot in life. What yall are doing is awesome. Keep up Gods work. Grace and peace.
It's definitely on the up and up! The project is being done by Cass Community Social Services (www.CassCommunity.org) a non-profit in Detroit that provides food, housing, health care and jobs to the cities most at-risk citizens. They've been fighting poverty and creating opportunity in Detroit for well over a decade!

Wow! Amazing! As a senior, on a very limited income, it is near impossible to rent a place, for 600 per month. And that is close to a hovel. I could live very well in those small spaces. Could spend more time enjoying life and my crafts, instead of hunting for something, because it us buried. I currently live in 5 x 10 space. I would have room for a basket of projects. I love clean lines and storage. Yours is truly a program that I want to see grow. Worldwide! You don't just give the bare minimum. You thought of their comfort and you made it homey. A home they could take pride in. Kudos!
I've heard of people taking shed kits like sheds you buy from lowes and simply turning that into a home either on a plot of land or on a trailer.
My goodness I live inWichita Kansas we have a very small home 750 square feet$550.00 a month that is way too much. I only get 749.00 SSI disability I live with my sister. How how can anyone afford to live too expensive. That's got to be a better way???
Consider building a tiny home on a trailer or save up and convert a van or a bus into a home.

this is what the netherlands do , they look after their citszens and their are maybe up to 10 homeless but , the netherlands gives them a house to live and a job.

Now this is news !! I wish my husband would downsize I am fed up with this waste of space and money !! All I want or need is a warm place to hang my head .I am thankful for a home but it is not all that matters to me. These places are beautiful.

I would think that doing something with the one in five empty houses in Detroit would be a more efficient use of dollars. Though I applaud Detroit for loosening the building codes to enable the building of these tiny houses. It would be good if more communities across the country would revise the building codes and zoning to allow people to build tiny.

No it can't go to all 50 states. It won't even be that big in Michigan honestly. It's just a "trial" type program that they always show in a small area.
The real estate lobby along with townships/municipalities won't like this on a large scale because they'd get less taxes (based on house size) and everyone else involved in housing would take substantial pay cuts from people who design and build the houses, to people who supply the materials, to people who would make all the things necessary to furnish/upkeep them.
NJ like Calif. needs these too, we have the HIGHEST cost of living here , homes, car Insurance, TAXES, etc. are out of control! I love this idea and wish it would spread around the Country!!

Most states have tight regulations on the minimum house size and it wouldn't be allowed. The regulations are ridiculous and stop low income people owning their own homes.

I absolutely love everything about this. One element I would add to it is one that Habitat for Humanity does- they have the people buying the home actually help build it (sweat equity). To me this weeds out the folks that are lazy takers and provides a real sense of pride in those who genuinely are grateful.

We don't like to negatively characterize people because we don't necessarily know their personal experience and believe with the right support and proper situation everybody has good in them and holds the potential to flourish. We can assure you, each of the residents has been extremely grateful.
There are certain conditions each of residents of the Tiny Homes Detroit community has to meet (which does include community service) and each of them does go through an application process because Cass Community is mindful about who they are providing this opportunity to.
That being said, Cass also doesn't want to exclude people who simply might not be capable of doing certain things. Cass is hugely supportive of Habitat for Humanity but is intentionally doing this program in a different way.
For instance, one of the residents is an elderly woman who has developed severe rheumatoid arthritis and another is a former pastor who lost his job after developing cerebral palsy. Clearly these are people who, through no fault of their own, would not be able to help build a house.
Nobody is inherently excluded from the program but we are certainly trying to set people up for success.

Its hard to pull yourself up out of depression, addiction, a life with no hope. This gives people an attainable goal and something to hope for, improve for and become better citizens. Bless everyone involved in this great project.
Well on the plus side of these tiny homes is, low maintenance cost, low heating/ac cost and low cleaning cost. It's not a place for big families but if you are single or maybe just 2 then it could work.

God bless you for caring about the poor and homeless! Almost no one. has any interest in helping these people in our Godless cruel society. Lack of hospitality and care for the poor were ehy Sodom of old was destroyed....read the story! Winter is upon us and there are hundreds of thousands of these people out there.
These spaces would be so easy to heat and cool, love the concept. I myself live in a 28x28 home, little over 750 square feet, it is very open and feels much larger with 2 bedrooms 10x 14 each, bathroom and laundry room that are 6x9ft each and the rest is an open floor plan that is kitchen and living space. I could easily live in one of these homes with my husband.
Is it possible you guys could bring that idea here. There are so many vacant lots and abandoned buildings in St Louis that could be used for something like this, and there are a lot of hard working people who could really use it. I hope you can spread to all the low income areas in America, you have an opportunity to make a huge impact. Anyway good work keep it up😁

This is an incredible program. I wish I could get out of homelessness and into one of those houses. I’ve seen another person make those as transitional housing, but this is the real dream!

What a cute and beautiful neighborhood they are creating. Kudos to this woman and all her contributors. They are doing good things for those who need it most. Jobs, homes, and security. These homeowners will own their very own home outright in 7yrs. Think about that for a minute.
These things clearly can fill a need and should be part of the housing picture. Just pray God that the established interests, such as realtors and home builders and mortgage bankers, don't convince government to regulate them out of existence.
They have and still do, they are the Monopoly, but we all must push for the changes needed in communities, counties, states, nationally, legislature, laws, zoning.....the whole AMERICAN DREAM needs to be reassessed created by a paradigm shift of epic proportions !!!

I always day put these tiny homes around dead mall revitalized them also
you can make a loft as a bedroom for more ground floor living space.
A loft is not good for people once they reach a certain age!
I love this so much. I wish we had programs like this everywhere.
Thats so beautiful ....every homeless person should be able to have one of these adorable small homes.There is so much old house and buildings that are falling apart, tear them down and build these for them....may God help them.
