Nice tutorial. You can make it even more efficient by using a "sweep" elbow fitting which is a longer radius bend much like the bent pipe on your original German jetpump. For your USA viewers who aren't DIY confident, Swiss Tropicals has been selling the German made jetpumps and jetlifts for over a decade as well as Poret foam which is hands down the best mattenfilter foam made. I have Poret foam that has been in service over a decade without breaking down and use it in my Hamburg Matten Filters (yes it is a German creation from 1960s), aquarium sumps, and canister filters. I don't use the expensive sintered ceramic biomedia at all anymore and it saves me a lot of money.

Went very well. Put them in a 40 gallon breeder shrimp tank. Using 2 whisper 40 pumps and flow was definitely 10 fold. I didn't measure, because it was so obvious, and no need to. There are no more dead spots and created a nice gentle flow, where all the plants have nice random swaying motion, and debris moves across the sand bed.
Made a smaller one for my 10 gallon shrimp tank the next day. Both are Matten filters.

@@TheUrbanFishkeeper I've updated most of my uplift tubes using this upgrade. Working great. Moving more water with far less air. The fish room is quieter now. Easy to take out and clean. Thanks for sharing!

Two things. The air stone in the pipe creates a massive restriction. Seriously inhibiting water flow. Second the air stone can create a substantial restriction on the air flow. Even when brand new let alone over time as it clogs. That means for the second type (forget the name of it) you are potentially using more air in a less restricted pipe. Not a surprise it produces a higher flow.
I'd like to see a test with a bare air line, with the air regulated/measured with a flow meter. How much difference then without the extra fabricating effort.

I have either made them too long or need a bigger pump, I will try a different pump before I cut them down
@@gavogr69 there are a couple of things, air normally the biggest culprit and if the pipe is to long and you have plenty of air it may require a third row of tiny holes. But lack of air is normally the issue.
@@TheUrbanFishkeeper currently the water just flows out the top, think I made them 30cm long tank is around 50 tall.
I will definitely try a different pump to make sure they work as eventually I want them all running off a single pump
@@gavogr69 sounds like not enough air. I turn mine down slightly to stop spluttering as there is to much air. Also make sure that the water is basically under the bend. The higher the bend out of the water, the less efficient.
I think it's the commercial diving industry that invented the air life. It's was used alot when divers were doing salvage jobs where they hv to clear big area of mud or sand to get to do their jobs.

Those are Czech Airlifts , Google Czech Airlift and they do produce much better flow than a airstone stuck down the tube for the simple fact the Airstone is not blocking 80% of the tube. The key is small holes in the pvc

watching this video 2 years too late! I definitely still have to give this a try. Thats a crazy increase in efficiency. I am curious however, whats the wattage/power on your airpump? Does it state how many liters/hour it can move?

Hi, I use the Aqua One Pond 8000, that does about 4200 L/hr of air. I am running in excess of 44 filters off it.
I want to increase the filtered area for the Nano filter that came with my tank. It is a corner filter with a small sponge with output bar. I plane to use this behind the Matten Foam to create the water flow over the increased filter area of Matten Foam. It has an adjustable flow rate and I think will work.
Hi, if you moving water from behind the matten to in front of it, then it will definitely work.
Wow! I will be heading to the hardware store in a bit. Might use 20mm instead of 18mm. This will be for a 40 breeder freshwater shrimp tank.

Great idea, however how would you clean it after a year or two when the little air hole start to clog with calcium? I have some jet lifters I bought and I can take them apart and use a fine wire (papper clip) to clean the holes.
Hi Holly, good point. I find that a old toothbrush does the trick, from the bottom. Couple of scrubs and rinse and it seems good to go.

I said that jetlifter or czech airlift is the best . Thank you for the vid bro.It was my suggestion. According to German researchers the most effective one is done by larger longer and with more 1mm holes.25mm diameter 35cm length and 200 times 1mm holes
With this measures Via 10 w 2*4litre/min air pump I got 600 litres/hour waterflow. It can reach up to 720 litres
Jetlifter gives the strongest flow when 1/3 of its top pipe inside of the water. It will skim the water
Thanks Mustafa. Hope you did not mind me mentioning your name. 😁 The challenge I have is for the smaller tanks I can't go more than about 18cm. 240 l/h is still massive on a 20 liter tank.

I don't want to take advantage of your kindness, but what air pump (brand or output) would you recommend to run Matten filters in two 20 gallon tanks.

Hey Don, no problem mate. I would think that you don't need anything massive. I use a aquaone pond 8000, that does about 70 liters a minute of air. I run approx 30 air driven filters off that.

I've gone to two LFS about that L joiner bit and haven't had any success (they don't even know what it'd be)... All hope has been lost with those stores!

@@keepinaquatics1148 if you can't get the L connector, just get the straight connector and have the air line connect to the side. If that makes sense. I just bend my own L connector from thin acrylic tube.
Wait, I’m confused. At no time do you mention an air stone other than that neither style uses an air stone. Then in first test run, unless my hearing is really bad, you say this is with the airstone.
Using small Air stones create such a maintenance burden. To be avoided where possible.
It does require maintenance, found the plastic air stones reduces this a bit.
You do know, that if the output of the airpump is not the same, and if the height of the pipe according to the waters surface is not the same, you will get a lot of different meassurements...
I agree, that the design, that danish people improved from the Checks, works better, but you cant compare it the way you did it...
An output of 100lt will always generate less flow that 200lt, etc etc....

Once the sponge gets clogged with much that needs to slow or it will either by pass or run dry the filter point of matten and sponge in general is slow low flow situations but idea ok

the video is false, when he compares the first and second options, you can see that he regulates the air supply valve, in the second option he simply opened it to the fullest, so that the flow seemed supposedly stronger
Hi, when using the airstone, you can't run the air at maximum as the stone can not cope with the air and produces almost zero flow. With the Supercharge you can increase the air, where you are limited with the airstone. The video is not false it is me sharing my findings, not a scientific experiment.
