Iron Maiden actually formed in 1975 and is still going strong. They just put out an album within the past few weeks. Maiden was also a major influence on Metallica and Thrash in general.

The weak one were with Blaze Bayley...no offense to him whatsoever, but it ain't Maiden without Bruce.
NPFTD was one of their weaker albums, I agree but keep in mind too, Adrian Smith had just left the band and the album came out in 1990, and Bruce would himself leave two years later and (sadly but inevitably) this was the end of what we knew to be hard rock and metal on the airwaves for nearly 10 years.
There were some bright spots on the Album but nothing worth wasting in a live set over.

That would be legendary, there is so much to unpack in that song and so much criticisms of religion, criticisms that are just, to be fair. the main one being people who are claiming what they are doing is for the greater good of god just to push their agendas. Then of course there is the lyric “and as he lies in heaven, or it could be hell, I feel he’s somewhere here, or looking from below” which implies god may not be good and is watching from hell, or at least in our eyes of what “good” is, we may see him as an evil being

Iron Maiden is a very interesting band. I grew up listening to them since the late 80’s and still do to this day. It takes someone with an open mind to accurately analyze an Iron Maiden sing. Yes the artwork and some of the topics they have brought up in their songs is enough to turn some Christians away without much thought but what are they actually glorifying? The songs are written from so many different points of view one can’t justify a snap judgement without carefully listening. This reaction totally threw me off guard, I thought you were going to go the other way. Great analysis! Looking forward to many more Iron Maiden reactions from y’all in the future.

Hallowed Be Thy Name would be a great song to analyze the lyrical content because it has to do about one’s faith being questioned and challenged. This was something that Steve Harris mentioned this about what the song is about on VH1 show that went over the impact and each song on Number of the Beast

  • @davidcarter7288

I see this song as a direct response to the anti-rock movement within evangelical Christianity. A lot of these preachers like Bob Larson for instance would hold revival meetings 'exposing' the supposed satanic agenda behind rock and roll. These meetings would often culminate with record burnings, done as a kind of reenactment of Acts 19:19: "And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver."
Iron Maiden were one of the top targets of these preachers, with their album Number of the Beast being on the top of the list of kindling. I think this song is a snarky comeback to these attacks, basically stating: "if you think our records going up in smoke is a holy thing, wait til you face judgment for your own unChristian behaviour."

    • @davidcarter7288
      @davidcarter7288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That being said, I echo a lot of other commenters on here that this is not a great representative track for Iron Maiden. There are a lot of Maiden songs that deal with Christian themes that would be worth taking on: Number of the Beast, Revelations, Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Evil that Men Do, Infinite Dreams, The Pilgrim, For the Greater Good of God, etc. I wanted to say though, as a fellow Christian metalhead, I really enjoy your videos.

Thanks for this video and also the history of the Baker Family and of course Swaggart. The church body today needs to understand these false teachers are still out there today and misleading people. The only difference is the televangelists and preachers just have different last names. People still fall for this better life and prosperous feel good preaching. It’s sad but it does show the people are hungry for good news but unfortunately so many are looking towards man himself and man will always let you down

You guys need a do over in your intro to Iron Maiden. While this isn't a bad song, it doesn't truly represent Iron Maiden's sound or theme. Many if not most of their songs are based on historical themes or events. My recommendation would be "The Trooper" if you really want to see what these guys are about. Many people will recommend the" number of the beast" due to its religious nature and it is a great song. However it was written somewhat as a joke in response to the accusations of the band being "satanic". "The Trooper " , "Aces High" and "2 Minutes To Midnight " are a good sample of Maiden's best stuff.

This is also the only maiden song where any of the singers swear .

I'd love for you to cover "Long Road, No Turns" by Daughters. The lead singer overcame sex and drug addictions over the last few albums and their newest was truly their magnum opus. It uses a lot of dead pan poetry with very visual lyrics. They also have a more slower song called "Satan in the Wait" which might be more lyrically relevant, but either way I think you guys will at the very least be conceptually and lyrically interested in them.

Hi Pastor Rob, just wanted to say well done on the discussion of the lyrics of this song. They are certainly quite scathing of televangelists. And I imagine that it could be uncomfortable to face the reality of these people that ostensibly share your faith publicly, but in private behave immorally by the very standards that they set for others.
I imagine that one of the reasons that you chose this particular song is that it seemed to fall into your arena of expertise, if you will. Iron Maiden certainly do social commentary in some of their songs. They have also written songs inspired by TV shows and movies, books, historical figures and events (particularly around wars and conflict), as well as poetry. Maybe you could take a look at their song list to see if another title piques your interest.

Some religion-themed AND awesome-sounding Maiden songs:
    -The Number of the Beast
    -Hallowed Be Thy Name
    -Revelations
    -Infinite Dreams
    -Sign of the Cross
-For the Greater Good of God

Good review. I always interpreted the entire second verse to be about Jim and Tammy Fay Bakker, bit it definitely could have been about Swaggert too.
Your comparison to "Leper Messiah" makes sense...it seems that more than a few of the favorite targets of the televangelists took the opportunity to kick them when they were down. Another song in this vein is "Miracle Man" by Ozzy...it might be worth your consideration too.
    God bless!!

Hey Gregory - I do believe when early in their career when Number of the Beast came out - Jimmy Swaggart wrote a book or an article with Steve Harris on the front cover and it was called - Heavy Metal - the New Pornography. Of course, linking this back to the Number of Beast album - even though they never read the lyrics that the song was about a nightmare - and their cheesy video was filled with throwback references to early horror movies - they were having fun with it. Fast forward a few years, Jimmy Swaggart get caught with a hooker and goes on TV crying and begging for forgiveness - so, I'm pretty sure the 2nd verse is about Swaggart - and they got him good!

In '89, right before this record came out, Steve Harris, the founder of the band and the bass player, had a fued with a television pastor. Well, it had been going on for most of the decade but came to a head around then. He was basically singling out Iron Maiden as a satanic force and a terrible influence on children, which actually couldn't have been further then the truth. The pastor was implicated in a few sex scandals and disappeared soon after. Pastor Rob, you hit the nail right on the head! Thnaks for checking out my favorite band

The backlash against Iron Maiden came mostly from the song and album Number of the Beast. If you are looking for Iron Maiden songs with interesting theological perspectives you would do better with Hallowed Be Thy Name, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Dance of Death. If you want them at their most epic, Rime of the Ancient Mariner is probably the best bet.

    • @davidbengtsson1999

Pharisees is actually a term used wrongly and gravely misunderstood. If you look into it Jesus was propably a Pharisee. The Pharisees were known for being true to the Word of God and well respected by the people even though they as well as we all did not have everything right. The reason for Jesus to attack the pharisees were love of them and also a result of who they themselves grew spiritually. They critized each other to be greater spirituatlly. The really bad people in that day was the Sauducess. They would fit in with Jimmy Swaggart. They were corrupted, loved money and so forth

This is a great Maidem song to discuss from a Christian standpoint, because it is really challenging by how it goes after televangelism and more generally the exploitation of the christian way. That could just be my opinion, although there are people who profess to do God's will, but don't really, and its important to be wary of that, not just in the lives of others, but you're own, like if you're following or being a charlatan

Vatican museum is endless halls full of riches from all over the world. Catholic church have been plundering that wealth almost since the beginning of it's existence. I mean no less then seven crusades were made. Roma has more then 900 churches. Most of them are works of art both out side, and in side.

wow great video if anyone watched it to the end. brought up in a Christion family I got all caught up in this from the 80s, destroyed all my Iron Maiden, Black Sabbeth and ACDC albums. All brought on by the holy Spirit war on Satanism. As a result of the fanaticism of the time. This led me to be disenchanted with the belief and would call myself an atheist, but still believe in the constructs of Christianity being consider others, obey laws, be seminarian, be humble etc, My family is Christian and I have no issues with that. I have acquaintances that are ministers are are genuine nice people but when it gets out of control it's destructive. Currently in Australia we are going through the same things with hillsong a grand church that offers you everything but wants your money to support their lifestyles. Also caught out in sex scandals.

A few things: 1. Slightly shocked and leery that pastor Rob wasnt at least familiar with Iron Maiden given we're around the same age 😆 that said 2. Glad to see another lifelong favorite band despite the track selected. 3. Bruce Dickinson was always one pf the grestest vocalists of the era and they were never the same after he left and the ripper took over. 4. Their guitar work was always great. 5. Finally was able to see them perform at Ozzfest some years back and was greatly disappointed in Bruce's attack and barrage of disdain for America especially being that if not for America at least half of his band's income and fame would not exist. That's despite their UK and European fanatics. Sad moment in my rock adventures. Feels like a lifetime ago though for sure. 2 Minutes to Midnite, Fear of The Dark, Run to The Hills, Tailgunner, ahhh... So many memories 😆
