Once upon a time Aseprite was once FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) until they changed it. A small team took the latest version of the FOSS Aseprite, updated it, to create Libresprite. Libresprite has less features than Aseprite but it is FOSS. The downside is that it doesn't seem to have any updates since Nov 2021. It's really small, less than 80MB and no installation required; just unzip then run the exe. I like it but I'm having a hard time adjusting to pixel art.

Why would you use Gimp when you can use Krita?

Krita is great to! As someone who used Photoshop for much of there life, I find GIMP to be more similar. But there’s no wrong answer, both are great in there own way!

You knew everything!? I’m honestly impressed! Haha I’ve been in the indie realm for almost 10 years now, and I only heard about Piskel like a year ago, same with GIMP honestly. As well as all the stuff you can get from emails. There’s so much FREE stuff that I feel like people don’t cover very often!
If you have any other recommendations, I’d love to hear them, Thanks!

Hm, just assumed you were from Apple with a whole different ecosystem. if you have the time, check these out (i feel they aren't talked about much):
edit: I'm a rookie though. about 3 years. so feel free to ratio or bash me, lol. 10 years is quite a while.
      Pixel art:
      1. libresprite. open source version of asesprite. It's literally aseprite.
      2. Krita. it's actually more powerful than any dedicated pixel art app because it has non destructive pixel art stuff like, posturize, HD indexing, tweening and other goodies. did i mention non destructive?
      3. Pixelorama. dedicated and has a few things aseprite doesn't have. Its open source and easy to mod because its made in godot with mostly GDScript.
4.Laigter. Normal map maker. Great for pixel art. Easy to use.
      5. Shoebox. Just a tool to extract sprites, make spritesheets and such sprite related stuff which aren't found even the the pixel art apps.
      HD 2d art:
      1. Krita. Everybody knows...shuddup! Nobody uses the addon called BlenderLayer enough!!! Drag your blend file into krita and trace!!!! it's live. Edit in blender and it reflects in krita as a layer.
      2. Opentoonz/Tahoma2d: 2d animation apps. Better than Krita for animating your HD sprites. Has very powerful tools and is quite obvious to use. After a few minutes of toying around, it become like any other app.
      3. Material maker: procedural texture maker. Free substance designer alternative).
      3D:
1.Blender. Lol, MakeHuman. free addon for blender. Self explanatory. (Dunno if the topologies it has will work for everyone but you can make your own types. Even makes game ready rigs (again it depends)
1.2 Vroid Studio. Sounds like a hemorrhoid but it's makehuman but for anime characters. Great topology and tools like hair maker and stuff.
      2. Sweethome 3d: Combined with blender, makes a very power unspoken of level editor. (its actually a house design app but creative use makes it versatile)
      3. Design doll: Goes with 2d art. It's a mannequin. Its rigged perfectly and reacts well when you move it around. great for making poses or as reference.
      Audio:
      1. LMMS. Free open source DAW. Like free for real not the way people claim Ableton is free (it isn't. Its annoying how everyone says it is).
      2. Musecore. Niche but its score composer. ( The only suggestion I've given which don't use though. I dunno anything about writing music)
3-6. Bfxr, Labchirp, Bosca Ceoil, Sfxr. sound effect DAWS and chiptune makers.
7.(Bonus) Audatious. Very light small portable audio player. (if you have hundreds of sounds, its easier to use this to browse them than your full on music player. Trust me guys)
      UI:
      1. Lunacy. UI designer. You'll protype UI faster and better an ordinary drawing app. I've seen nerds use it along side Inkscape for rapid ui prototyping and creation.
      Project Planning:
      1. One Note. Free Kanban(ish), whiteboard, notepad, mood board, planner etc. Its a powerful app we all have on windows but not talked about. I use it everyday. throw your spreadsheets, docs and officy stuff in it. Make your whole GDD in here even. Nice eco system.
2.Kanban Tasker. Have no friends (neither do i) and need offline Trello? Use this. (can sync to one drive)
      3. Obsidian. Have an irrational fear of the word Kanban? This is your guy.
      4. Super Productivity. Scared someone might light obsidian and open a fucking nether portal? Hopefully this is your guy.
That's the list of stuff I use for gamedev but don't really hear people talk about them much) Hope I mentioned at least one someone doesn't know about. (😅😅). Also. Tune your numbers in Excel or sheets or calc or whatever spreadsheet folks. With a few formulas, you'll know balance your games numbers faster than doing the math yourself. (levels, stats, economy, how many fire types have i come up with? cost of swords if you enchant them with rubber or spinach? etc. use it. Saves you time you can use for more productive things like procrastination. great for tuning figures and predicting outcomes and stuff).

10 years is a while. Well, I assumed you were from apples ecosystem so those apps can be unheard of there it seems but I see many people talk about them. @@SoulEngineDev Here's my list. If you have the time, try them out:
      Pixel Art:
      1. LIbreSprite. Its open source Aseprite. It literally IS asesprite.
      2. Pixelroma. Open source, easy to mod because it was made in Godot using GDscript. Has a few goodies not found in aseprite right now.
      3. Krita. Yuhp, WAY more powerful than any dedicated pixel art application. You have more tools, and you can do stuff like HD indexing, tweening, posterize and all other filters and non-destructively. Did I mention non-destructively?
      4. Shoebox. Sprite sheet tool. You can cut out sprites from a sheet and other stuff not found in pixel art apps. (why aren’t they even in there?)
      5. Laigter. Normal map maker. Works great with pixel art. Easy to use.
      2D HD Art:
      1. Krita. “Everyone knows kr-” “shut your damn mouth, Kevin!!” Nobody uses the addon called “Blender Layers” enough. Drag your blend file into krita and trace. Its live, so any changes you make in blender reflect in the krita layer right there like bang!
      2. Opentoonz/Tahoma2d. Great powerful easy as heck to use 2d animation application for the nation PlayStation. Animate your HD sprites with this guy. Colouring is much easier than krita or gimp. EG: change the colour of Bens pants once and it changes his pants in every frame.
      3D Art:
      1. MakeHuman. Self-explanatory. Base mesh maker with topologies to choose from and game ready rigs. (won’t fit for everyone’s needs. Its on the overkill side so you might need some extra editing)
      2. Design Doll. Just a great rigged mannequin. Great for tracing making poses to reference. It reacts well to movements. Getting it to sit or squat or float is easy.
      3. Sweet Home 3D. Combined with blender, makes a VERY powerful level editor, it’s ridiculous that it’s not really mentioned.
      4. Material Maker. Substance designer alternative. Made in Godot. Easy to use.
      5. (bonus) Freecad. If you need more precision than blender, like making a pool table or something, this is your dude. Not for artists though.
      Audio:
      1. LMMS. An actual free DAW unlike Ableton. (it’s annoying how everyone says it’s free. IT IS NOT!). With the right VSTs, it’s just like FL Studio, I dare say. Ableton isn’t free ffs.
      2. Musecore. For making scores. (I personally don’t use it yet so I’m just parroting what I’ve heard on this one)
      3. (bonus) Audatious. If you have hundreds of audio files to go through, this is your guy. Trust me, guys. Its lighter and more practical than you whole ass music player in this specific use case. You must use it to get why I’m even mentioning it.
      4. Bfxr, Bosca Ceoil, Sfxr, Labchirp. Small sound effect and chiptune DAWS.
      UI:
      1. Lunacy. Very powerful UI designer. You’ll prototype (or even complete) your UI faster in this than your drawing application. Use them together. I’ve seen nerds use it with inkscape to effectively.
      Project Management:
      1. One Note. Kanban, mood board, beat board, whiteboard, journal, sketchpad, voice recorder, notebook, whatever. This guy can be all that plus more. Throw your other officy stuff in. Your pdfs, other docs, spreadsheets, images etc. It’s a very powerful ignored project planner. Everyone ignores it or talk about Trello.
      2. Kanban Tasker. Have no friends (neither do I) and don’t want to log on to the internet to see your tasks? This is your free offline Trello.
      3. Obsidian. Have an irrational fear of the word kanban? Use this dude instead.
      4. Super Productivity. Keep accidentally igniting obsidian and opening a friggin’ nether portal? Hopefully this is your guy.
      5. Xmind. Mind mapping flow chart thingie. I use it quite a bit as well.
      6. (bonus) Any spreadsheet application. Trust me, folks. Tune your numbers in here. With a few formulas, you’ll save a lot of time balancing your games numbers. Organize your stats, classes, inventories, economies etc right in here. Making types but need to keep track of how many monsters of each type you’ve made? Spreadsheet. Need to know the cost of swords after you enchant them wit rubber or spinach? Spreadsheet. Need to know which stats are OP or UP (I assume that means underpowered, lol)? Spreadsheet. Need to predict how what level your slime will be after eating 9 herbs? Spreadsheet. Need to add stats for punch, kick or… you get it by now. Best part is you can export CSVs to your engine and edit the fugues non-destructively in engine. You must milk the power of spreadsheets guys; The corporate world has a point on this one.
Well, that the list off free apps I use (except musecore) which I don’t see a lot of people talk about. I’m new to gamedev; only about 3-4 years old so feel free to ratio or bash me.
