At the end of the day, we must never judge this soldier in any way. No one can assume he was bad, evil, holy, saintly, anything.
He was a young man caught up in war and paid the ultimate sacrifice. There is no higher price to pay.. In combat situations you are fighting for survival and for your brothers in arms, not for your governments ideologies. This is a very personal relic and I wish we knew this soldiers identity.. R.I.P. to the Unknown Soldier of every nation.

So he's not fighting for his government ideology.?? So why is he in combat.??

and from fairly close range too I would suspect judging from the placement and the fact that the rounds entered and exited the helmet and the wearer's head. I have seen many battle damaged German helmets and usually they only had an entrance hole. The size of the hole suggests that it was a 30.06 round as fired from the .30 cal. machine gun. The way they crisscrossed might suggest that the first round twisted his head slightly before the second round hit. That an American soldier brought the helmet home supports the theory that it was a .30 cal. machine gun also. Quite interesting.

The history of the helmet is extremely sad, a life taken in war is never good, someone's son, father, husband, brother and friend. 70 years on, wars still rage in places like Syria, but thankfully not on the scale of WW2. We must learn from the past, to live a more peaceful tomorrow. Phenomenal collection !

Two bullet holes coming from the front is more typical of helmets being shot for fun, than of real battle damage. This is confirmed by close observation of the inside of the helmet. You can see there are many small holes in the leather near the main exit holes: these holes are caused by small metal fragments coming from the entrance holes. If the helmet had been worn at the time of the gunshots, these small fragments would have been stopped by the soldier's head.
A nice helmet that was shot at some point to make it more interesting.

I met an old gentleman once who was a partisan during WWII in France, I believe. Anyway, he told me that near the war's end, he had stood up and was hit in the head above his eyes , on his helmet, he happened to be wearing. He said the force of the shot hitting the helmet above his eyes knocked him down but not out and dented the steel. He said it was a 'spent 50 Cal slug' and that he was lucky to still be alive.

When I was in the 5th grade (1969) in California, my teacher was a WWII vet. Each year he would bring to school his WWII memorabilia -- including five German Lugar pistols, 3 or 4 Nazi flags, a German officer’s uniform, and a German helmet with a huge hole in the top of where shrapnel had entered. I’ll never forget when a girl in my class asked, “What happened to the guy who was wearing it?” There was dead silence in the room as we all realized the seriousness of her question and what had clearly happened. Sadly, we were the last class to be able to see all that material in real life -- our teacher lent it out for a display at a jewelry store. It was robbed and everything was stolen. Not all German soldiers during the war are Nazis. A extremely common misconception, not all Germans were bad. They did just like our boys did, do what you're told. They didn't have to agree, but they did what their country asked of them. They deserve respect.
They were people, just like the Americans, just like the British, the Italians, the Russians, Japanese, and all people and countries involved in this war.
Thank you for showing this amazing piece of history. It tells a story that none could ever start, nor end.
It just is. And always be.
R.I.P. to all the lost in WW2, and hopefully, it will be our last World War.
They say history repeats itself, and I believe it takes many forms of it's previous self. Let us keep an open eye, and remember, war, unless totally rightful in it's just cause of bringing forth a new system, better for the people and the world, should not occur.
Forever, down with tyrants, oligarchs, dictators, and the ruling class who deceive the world.

Shrapnel would make bigger holes. And as _Dylan James2019_ said there are holes in the back meaning something went THROUGH the helmet. Shrapnel with cut and dig in but not go through. Also, helmets are made to protect against shrapnel so shrapnel small enough to make that size of a hole wouldn't have an exit hole.

I am lucky to have a lot of Items that my Father brought home from his Tours of Duty... He was in the U.S. Army for 29 years, Fought in Europe, Korea, and Vietnam....
He was only 19 years old and in the Second wave of landing crafts to hit Omaha Beach,, when He earned his 1st Purple Heart, and got his 1st WW2 souvenir... A Piece of Shrapnel that he put in his pocket after a Medic dug it out of his thigh... He carried it for weeks till he could mail it with a letter, back to his Little Brother in the states for safe keeping....It's only about the size of your Thumb nail,, But it was his most prized possession from that war,, And I have it and the letter still today....
And that's what most items brought/sent back from war are... something that had some kind of meaning to the soldier....

He had an original SS helmet with the lightning bolt symbols on it. He had a couple German bayonets. He had a German officer's cap with the death skull on the front of it. He had a couple German stick grenades, of course they had been disarmed. Nazi flag with a swastika on it. He also had something very unique was a German medical kit that each Soldier carried with aphentimne tablets or "speed". he told us the German soldiers took those because it heightened their senses and they could stay awake longer. He had all kinds of this stuff. after talking to him I found out that he was a officer and one of the US divisions fighting in France and into Germany. You being a collector you would have went ape s*** if you'd seen all this stuff

Didn't know headshots were illegal, i guess in a life-death situation you should stop and aim centre mass.

Eurasian Lynx head shots aren’t illegal, execution on the field is which is what the OP is probably referring to. Thinks whoever wore it was executed and usually only executed if you did pretty bad things

@@bigpeenerpeen I don't think he was executed why give a prisoner a helmet before execution ? That makes no sense.
My best guess is that the Soldier that wore the Helmet was a Machine gunner in a fixed position, you can see that the 2 bullet holes actually come from 2 different directions and are probably rifle rounds. So maybe 1 Soldier shot the gunner he fell over and then another Soldier from a different position shot him again to make sure.

It would have been nice if you were able to get the area location where the helmet was acquired.

What type of gun could it have been? I would guess its not an mp, since it would be hard to go through the front, through skull(had a bigger head so going out the end would be a hard thing to do) and out the other side, but there could have been more than 1 bullet that followed in the exact same path.

Was aluminum commonly used during this time period because that is what the liner is made of as well as the buckle and rivet.

Keep this helmet and take good care of it to pay respect to the soldier. This is such a rare find.

I wonder if samples of the blood soaked liner could be analysed to find out more about the soldier.

Regardless of this soldier's ideology/what he fought for. The loss of Human Life is tragic. I hope he didn't feel any pain when he died.
