  • Day Safari out with Klaus Tiedge looking for opportunity to film & photograph Lions in the Masai Mara.
    We trail 3 Males but they are sleeping so we find a young mother with 3 adorable lions cubs playing in the bush. That evening we witness the cruelty of the Masai Mara as a new-born lion cub is likely killed by it's older sister and the pride ends the day with a call to hunt during a beautiful sunset.

    I find it interesting how lions and tigers process an open jeep differently, tigers attack and lions chill.

    The style of the photos - post production - is amazing. The fact that the safari vehicle Klaus uses allows him to shoot from the truck bed - gives 75 cm + advantage to the rest of us. On my last safari I was in the front left seat and this made a huge difference for my shots, but being able to be even lower while close to big lions is wonderful. I was last in the MM in March 2017, but only for 16 days. Staying in my favourite camp on the Mara side we got to track most of the big prides and males (particularly Scarface and his three brothers)

    Don’t moms usually introduce them to the rest of the pride after a few weeks? Those are tiny

    • @Sammy-kn2nb
      @Sammy-kn2nb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Usually not until at least 2 months or more. They’re still too delicate after a few weeks....they’re still fragile even at 2 months or more but not as easily injured accidentally by older cubs or bigger members of the pride. They’re fathers aren’t even allowed to be near them at first. I’m honestly surprised those itty bitty ones are with the pride at all.

    I’ve seen lionesses guard n protect the Cubs with their own lives from first breath until last. In nature tho it is the rule only the fit survive and for good reason so I agree it’s circumstantial.

  • @SHINESunshinee872
    @SHINESunshinee872 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Weird because usually the mother gives birth away from the pride and doesn’t introduce then until the cubs are a few weeks old... must be a weird circumstance here.

    • @DeanPaarman
      @DeanPaarman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Often when a lioness gives birth to only a single cub it is abandoned. The effort & likeliness of successfully raising a single cub is not worth the outcome for the pride. They must keep their numbers up to keep the linage going, a single cub will mess with the growth potential. It is a harsh reality of the animal kingdom and reminds us of the cruelty of nature. It doesn’t work on emotion, but survival of the fittest. A sad, but real moment indeed.

    • @ross_spirou_photography
      @ross_spirou_photography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DeanPaarman That makes no sense as there has been many cases of lionesses giving birth to single cubs and raising them to adulthood

    • @DeanPaarman
      @DeanPaarman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ross hence the word: often. There is no absolute rule. It’s also circumstantial. This was a particularly large pride (over 18 lions).

    • @ross_spirou_photography
      @ross_spirou_photography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DeanPaarman It makes no sense for a lioness to invest three months being pregnant, for her to give birth to a single cub and for her to say, nah, one cub is not worth it so I will fall pregnant again and if my next litter is again only one cub then I will abandon that one as well, it just does not make sense and goes against nature itself!

    • @DeanPaarman
      @DeanPaarman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ross_spirou_photography I hear you. I cant say whether this is normal or not, but it's what happened while we were there, and corroborated by our guide. I'm absolutely no animal expert, but am told that circumstantially this happens in the Masai Mara every so often. It was March when we filmed this, which is rainy season. The migration (real food source) is 6 months away. This was a pride that was constantly on the move. Nature decided it was not going to work... only reporting on what I saw.

    That cub is too small to be out of the den. Older cubs are just too rough on the babies. Lionesses don't usually introduce the cubs to the whole pride until they are approximately two months old. I believe Klaus died of cancer several years ago.

    You should know that the cub is NOT "a few minutes old"! Lion cubs are born blind and with their eyes "closed", I think for the first 2 weeks, but I'm not positive on how long for sure. But this cub's eye's are open! So that proves you wrong! Get your facts together because I don't like composing texts or comments!
