You don’t use your arm to play Master of Puppets, you suppose to use your wrist as a pendulum. That’s the secret for speed picking. You’ll never have Hetfield down picking speed if you use your arm for down stroke.

@@nc3057 honestly I think the biggest favor I did myself was practicing chromatic scales up and down the neck ascending and descending, starting with both upstrokes and downstrokes for hours. you have got to strengthen that pinky. keep at it it will click in a few months and you will feel so proud of yourself. I never even practiced downpicking only until I started learning this intro.

If you play it about 1 to 2 hours a day for a month you can get it done haha. I have the hard fingertips to prove it, and I wake up like 10 times a night with my left hand numb/in pain.

You use the little finger even though it's an ordinary G5 for example. Is there a special reason for this? I'm someone who has never touched an electric guitar before in his life or even learned about chords or strings or really anything about music. I'm considering buying one but I wanna know if I can still do songs without lessons by using TH-cam videos or if I should take lessons.
It would be advisable to take lessons if you want to make something out of playing guitar, like joining a band. But if you just want to dick around I'd say TH-cam will do fine. Either way just remember some of the most famous guitar players taught themselves, and that was before the internet.

When you guys are performing the 3rd and 2nd fret power cords back to back in the second part of this tutortial, how do you work your thumb? Mine tends to get stuck to the neck during the transition making it harder to stay consistent. Will this just come with practice?
what I am doing is keeping my thumb in 3rd fret position and just extending my fingers back to second fret. you need to make sure you are keeping a super relaxed wrist to do this though

Tommy Shank depends on what kinda power chord your using. Only hold down one string with the pinky
