    OUTSTANDING step by step instructional video good Sir! I like the way you took the extra time to document each step for those of us that haven't done the install yet. This is one of my future mods, and watching this video just took the guesswork out of any of it. Thanks!

    I bought this set for my brand new 2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab
    and they gave me fits to install them!
    They Do Not Fit. I followed the
    written instructions exactly to the letter. Got all done, was all proud. Put
    power to them… And the retracted up
    under the truck and wedged behind the pinch welds. I worked for hours putting brackets and
    linkages on than taking them back off numerous times, I adjusted brackets and
    linkages to NO avail. The boards jammed
    up and got stuck under the truck every time to the point where I had to remove
    the motors and pried them out from under my brand new truck scratching up the
    AMP Research running boards. Decided to
    call customer service. I called and
    spoke with Brian Weaver. I explained my situation and he seemed to know exactly
    what happened. Brian said “they got stuck behind the pinch weld right???” I
    said Yep!!! He said with a snarky little
    attitude “I’ll send you an email that’ll explain what to do”… So I get this email with an eight step
    process to remedy the problem. I
    followed that set of instructions to the letter again. Well step # 8 said if all else fails take a
    hammer and bend the pinch weld seam over to make it fit. I tried but I would have had to bend that seam
    over 45 degrees and I didn’t want to go that far with the sledge hammer. Long story short I had to take a 4” angle
    grinder, remove ¼” + off the top of the pinch weld seam to get my new $1500 AMP
    Research’s running boards to operate on my $70,000 brand new truck. Needless to say I was PISSED!!!! For that amount of money the AMP Research product should have fit like a glove.
    If you are looking to buy a set of nice power retractable
    running boards LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE!
    Don’t spend your money here, You will be Disappointed !!!!!
    PS… I took the AMP
    Research badges off the steps so they don’t get any free advertising from
    me. They better run flawlessly for a
    long time… If they so much as hiccup I’m
    going to unbolt them and throw them into the dumpster……. I’ll definitely let you know…….

    I just became a dealer and installer of AMP Research products. I followed your video to a T and it was spot on for a 2016 Toyota Tundra except for the wires you tap into on the passenger side were a bit different. I agree with your comment about the clips they give you to hold the housing on the motor - very cheezy! I thew them away after trying and breaking two of them and just zip tied the covers on.

Just bought a 2013 Ram Crew Cab that is the Express (body color bumpers/grill) addition (HEMI!!!) and I didn't want steps at all to keep everything "clean" for lack of a better term. Wife has got to have them though. These will be going on the truck. Excellent video. I'm sure it will be very helpful.

    Great question, short answer is "I am not sure". I checked the AMP-Research site for you, and they do NOT list the Hilux as an available model. But they do list both the Tundra and the Tacoma. I would give AMP-Research a call and find out if one of their products will work for your truck.

    My amp steps stop working and so did my cig lighters. Have you ever come across this problem? I have a 16 tundra TRD pro. I noticed that I moved the wires a little and then one side worked and the other didn't. Then both stopped. Lighters also went out.

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear this, good news is your truck is still under warranty I would get that beast into the dealer for some diagnostics. It could be as simple as a blown fuse, or bad wire connections, no doubt fixable. Love the TRD Pro BTW, great choice.

  • @olivetone87
    @olivetone87 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    2 questions- do you know if the wiring is the same for a 2009? also when you install the motor and idler linkage do you use the 12mm stock bolts to put it on or the 13mm ones included in the package? awesome video by the way, i was going to get them professionally installed but after watching this video im going to give it a shot. thanks alot man

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind comment. Yes the wiring is the same for your 2009 and you can throw away those stock bolts. Consider them plugs from the factory that kept your threads clean so you could easily bolt on the steps of your choice. You are going to love your new steps, even more so after you save yourself money on the installation.

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like it is working some of the time which leads me to believe it thinks it is hitting something which would prevent it from deploying. Start by lubing all the hinge points. If that doesn't work, loosen the bolts attaching it to your truck and realign the hinges then tighten it back up. Best guess is that the hinges are dirty and binding, but this is only a guess. If these suggestions don't solve your issue, you should give AMP research a call. I am sure they can solve it.

    How are they holding up in the snow..? Any problems after this install..?

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tony krzic They are holding up great, a little dirtier than new, the rough sandpaper like surface can be a bit challenging to clean. But they function perfectly, and one of my favorite things about them is the way they work in winter. Normal steps get covered in the snow and slush kicked up by the front tire and can get slippery. Because these steps tuck under the body of the truck they are protected from that snow and ice. When they deploy they even knock off the slush off the bottom. I have not had any problems with them, these steps are still one of my favorite additions to this truck. Thanks for watching and taking the post your questions.

    I thought it was just mine, but that loud clunk it makes when it retracts is annoying. Its especially loud inside the truck. For a $1500 product I’m a little upset. I’ve read other forums about this clunk and one of them said if we reach out to Amp Research, they will fix the issue somehow

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both of mine have clunked from day one, I consider it part of the charm. I like the way it knocks the snow off the bottom when they deploy. I have had mine for so long, I can't imagine bugging AMP about them unless they stopped working, which I probably just jinxed -- facepalm

    • @loudnoises4627
      @loudnoises4627 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AutoDIY So I had mine installed 9 days ago at a shop which offers 5 yr install warranty and my LED lights are already peeling off. On top of that both running boards are making contact when retracted with only the motors closest to the engine. The motors furthest away from engine dont come in contact with running boards when retracted. Its weird. You can even tell when you step back that the gap between frame and running board increases as it gets closer to engine. The metal to metal contact has even exposed the metal beneath the black finish on the running boards. Im just having bad luck with these. I called AMP Research and they told me it sounds like the motor clock is not right and the installer should have caught it. What's weird is no where in the installation instructions does it mention setting any motor clock. What are your thoughts? Also is the black finish on your running boards holding up or are the lots of silver scratches?

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh me oh my, sounds like you got a lemon, not a single scratch on mine, not event a blemish. LED lights are all still stuck and working great. My guess is your installer failed to take the time to properly clean the install location with rubbing alcohol prior to placing the lights. It could be they didn't line up the steps correctly prior to tightening everything up and they are binding when they deploy, giving the appearance of the gap you're describing. Hopefully your install shop can hook you up. I suspect if they take it apart and take a few minutes to line things up, they will work great for you. I am sorry you are dealing so many issues. Best of luck to you.

    • @loudnoises4627
      @loudnoises4627 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AutoDIY Wow no scratches on running boards yet?! you must either live in an area with no rocks or you just dont drive the truck much. The little rocks caught under my shoes have definitely scratched the running boards already. This exposes the shiny silver under the black finish.
      in any case, I was able to schedule to bring the truck back to installer in two weeks. I agree with you in that I belive they didnt prep the surface correctly before applying the LED's. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your responses.
