It's been a good 5 years since I worked on S Factor, and boy, does some of this review hit home. I agree with you on the level design; the parts that are mine aren't some of my best work, but I am still happy to have been a part of it. Personally, Chaotic Street Zone is my favourite in terms of art, level design and music.
By the way is Scourge still unlockable? Ive noticed gameplay videos of him being playable as well and from what I gather the game seemed to have been balanced around him. Ive also seen people say Blaze is also playable
Don't be sorry about badmouthing the levels. I might love the idea of this game and I'm totally ecstatic to see a fully playable Silver with his own abilities, but that still doesn't make up for how dickish some of these levels are.
All of you are scrubs. I use a SEGA Genesis emulator... WITH A REWIND BUTTON TO REVERSE MY MISTAKES! On top of that, my framerate is absolute shit and yet I'm still managing to play this!
I guess this review explains why the hack didn't click with me when I played it back in 2013 as seeing all that cheap level design in this video reminded me of "Mega Man and Bass" where the game had a habit of making the levels and bosses a chore to complete no matter who you were playing as. Makes me wonder if the general opinion on this hack has changed since those posts shown at the start of the video like what happened with Sonic 1 Megamix because seeing this being praised as one of the best Sonic rom hacks kind of perplexes me a little bit. Before anyone asks, I found this via a convenient past sign post.
To make Metal Sonic open for attack you have to jump into him with enough speed when he's in a ball. If you had enough speed he'll fly to the side of the screen, bounce off of it, and become open for attack. I remember having a few problems with this. For one, the amount of time you have to hit Metal Sonic is very small. It makes it really difficult with Silver since he has no real way to gain speed. Super Silver is almost a must for that fight. And two, sometimes after bouncing into Metal Sonic you rebound back a bit giving the player even less time to score a hit. Also Metal is just a little too spastic at times. Then there's the time limit. 3 long bosses in one stage felt like a bit much. I'm surprised you didn't harp on it some more. Fun Fact: There's also a 4th character to play as. It's Blaze. I forget the method to play as her, but she's very incomplete. Her sprites change between herself, Sonic, and Shadow if I recall correctly and I don't think she had a unique moveset either.
There's a lot of content that got cut from my review (like me talking on the bosses more or the Blaze/Shadow/Sonic character), but it was getting over 25 minutes long then. I had to shorten it somehow. But thanks for the tip on how to defeat Metal Sonic. It'll come in handy for the live stream :)
Live stream should be a fun time. Also, just a quick correction on my part, you don't need to bump Metal into a wall, if you bump him up high enough he'll be vulnerable when he hits the ground. I just found the walls to be easier. You can also bump him when he uses the attack where the screen flashes and he homes in on you to make him vulnerable. It's been a few years since my last playthrough, so my bad. Was an enjoyable review by the way! I look forward to more in the future.
I agree, this game has never been one of my favourites despite the game having almost a complete overhaul. The art is probably the best feature of this hack, Spectra Valley, Arid Temple and the water level have the best art, Ring Land not only looks horrible but the layout is so bare with not much item boxes or rings. I hate the bosses, they're far too difficult and take ages to destroy, although I congratulate the developers for changing them at least. The music is horrible and boring except for a few tracks, I don't like hacks that use too many different percussion samples in different tracks, keep it simple like the original games did. The Special Stages are quite interesting because they're different and not the usual floating mazes, but that last one where you have to find that McMuffin thing from McDonald's is annoying! For the life of me I cannot complete this game without spamming the hell out of save states on the Everdrive. Good things: 1. Different characters to play as. 2. Graphics and art is really nice (except Ring Land) 3. The score tally at the end of an act adds up how many kills you made aswell as time and rings. 4. Finally, unlike most Sonic 1 hacks, this one was optimised in audio for PAL 50Hz. Bad things: 1. Too damn hard! 2. Bosses are too long and are very difficult. 3. 90% of the music is horrible. 4. The last Special Stage takes forever to work out what to do. 5. Too many dick moves. 6. Ring Land is too empty. 7. The game sometimes crashes sporadically for no reason. My final score is 4 out 10. Sorry but there are better hacks out there like ''Sonic The Lost Worlds''.
That Singstar microphone gag reminds me of the fact that I used to use one for early videos. Bad days. inb4 someone questions how the hell I made this comment before the video was released. I'm a time traveller.
I remember playing this rom hack years ago. I didn't follow the hacking contest properly back in 2013. Only just saw what Sonic hacks I can play with via Sonic Retro. Onto the main review with feedback: I agree with your points. The story doesn't really structure well in a unique way, and it's mainly just modifying level layouts and boss patterns with different characters to play with, alone. I do like the splash screens, title screen, and options screen (hence, menu theme). I wasn't a fan of the modern SEGA logo style. Interesting easter egg with the password feature, even though Scourge was featured in the old version of this hack. Such a shame that the main gameplay style formulas are just like a traditional classic Sonic game. I enjoyed Sonia's super twirl, an effective spin dash alternative, for the most part until the downsides. Ah well, nothing is perfect. At least Sonia's version of an insta-shield is more useful. Silver's levitating in the air trick was my favourite as I can land on higher places instead of trying to jump my way up, etc. 7:34 was a nice callback to his ability from Sonic '06. In terms of level design, and object placements, I now understood so much more flaws which really frustrates the player for no reason (similar to after watching your Sonic Scorched Quest review). My only favourites are Placid Sapphire and Chaotic Street (artwork), and your top 3 soundtrack picks. The only thing I liked about the special stages is the mission objectives, except the 4th one. The rest wasn't as appealing. I like how all of the present bosses are technical in their own way, minus the boss patterns at White Blaster. 17:04 was very surprising. So many Game Over moments in these clips. For me, it looked like the new version made things worse when it came to making further changes.
Finally, someone who addresses the bad hazard placement! Still, I do respect the effort put into the game...but the only way I could beat it is with cheating as Scourge. God, it felt so good to have the Super Peel Out again!! Also, you give really good hints~
imma be honest there is NO reason for the game to have have sonia in it, aside from maybe the name. You can replace her with Blaze and not have to change the moveset at all. not forgetting it would fix the bizzare pairing since Silver and Blaze are commenly dipicted together
I dont even who thought it was a good idea to use the loud ring sound entirely for the music they even make it so high pitched that its just a high frequency and not even a sound effect
I have mixed opinions for The S Factor, it's pretty fun to play and most of the stages are pretty annoying. Silver is pretty difficult to play because of how slow he runs. A.N.N., Metal Knuckles, and Metal Sonic take a while to fight. I feel that the speed shoes are kinda rare and instead we have the "Nega Speed".(By the way, the speed-up theme is from Sonic 06 in case no one noticed.) One way to make Scourage selectable on the character select is to have a save state with him selected from an older version of the hack. Also, Scourage is probably the only one who has a super theme. It would be really great if the hack would get an update someday to fix the bugs, errors, improve everything, and add more features to make the game more enjoyable.
I had to look him up and then I found he was from the American Sonic comics. Being from England, I had no clue. I found out before I even started the editing process but it wasn't important to go into detail on who he was; so I didn't.
redhotsonic Oh, sorry. Good to know. Besides, I think he fits in the plot, given that his name starts with an 'S' and he collects not the 7 Chaos Emeralds, but 7 Anarchy Beryl pieces. And by the way, thank you so much for revealing the way to unlock Scourge. I've played this game for a month, and I still could not get him. Also, check out the jukebox (sound select). It's got the Super themes of not just Sonia and Silver, but almost every character whose themes are in the options menu. And also other pretty nice soundtracks. And SFX.
To be fair, I spent most of my time playing this hack with the level select and debug, during the special stages, mostly. The goal of Special Stage 8 (only playable by completing all 7 main special stages via level select) perplexes me, wanting Sonia/Silver to collect 50 MacGuffins, if I recall right.
DID YOU KNOW THAT: while I was playing the s factor on the 4th special stage I literally got into the water then I got out JUST TO GET CHEAP SHOTTED! I am Happy somebody knows about the design or I would of gone insane! you got a subriber
This hack really has potential but at the end it just seems half-assed, the level design is bad and half of the stages are either boring or recolors of vanilla sonic stages.
Old versions have Scourge as a unlockable character. Im not sure why he was removed to be fair maybe it was due to that event. For those wondering what he would do I'd say he functions a lot like Sonic CD plus that aerial speed boost
Scourge is playable, all you need to do is go to settings, put the music on the double theme, go to the title screen, and use the sonic 1 level select code.
In an era of stuff like "Sonic 2 Delta" and "Sonic 1 + 2", something like this which has custom graphics, music, levels, gimmicks, bosses, and all that was probably _insanely_ impressive in 2013. But in 2018? Or especially 2022? Hacks like this are kind of a dime a dozen because the tools make it so easy. I mean yes, it still takes effort, but these kinds of hacks are much more common, is all. I dunno. I'd have to personally play each and every sone of the other nominees to make a judgement.
E- I know I'm a bit late, but maybe you should check out the pre-2013 release. A few of the things you disliked weren't present, but Sonia lacked the kick move (iirc). More so, I prefer its version of Ring Land. Came here from the sonic advance 3 video with garrulous64, hoping you had an episode of "but does it run on real hardware" for this hack. I think it won best hack for how much it adds and changes from sonic 1, not necessarily what it did with what it added.
I know how long ago this video was, but I might as well put my opinion here. Pros: - Eggman Nega's back. Haven't seen him in a while. - Sonia & Silver teamed up. Both of them are underrated characters. - I didn't know Sonic Underground was canon. - I quite like the zone art, with Placid Sapphire being my favorite. - Presentation is through the roof. - As expected for a Sonic game, the music is good, with White Blaster Acts 1 & 2 being my favorite. Cons: - The level design sucks ass. - Getting a Game Over is way to easy. - The bosses are admittedly creative, but just as difficult as the levels, expect for the final boss, which is a complete joke as it took one hit to destroy. - Glitches. Glitches everywhere. HELP ME!! - It's a little unfair that Scourge (the secret character) can spindash, peelout, and air dash, while the title characters don't have either of them. - The Special Stages are also bad, especially the fourth one, that can suck a big one. - Sonia's OP due to her Super Twirl being able to crash through spikes. - The Super forms aren't worth it. As redhotsonic stated, it's literally just Super Sonic. - Destron City Act 3 is speedrunning the entirety of Green Hill recolored purple and stripped of its rings, and you have to complete all 3 sections. UNDER. 30. SECONDS. EACH. Overall, 5/10. Looks alright, but plays terribly for the reasons above.
The version of the ROM is the 2013 version (I think) there is a 2016 version on the 2016 sonic hacking contest website I couldn't get it the ROM to download but maybe it'll work for you.
While it isn't very well telegraphed, you can drain the water out of the special stages by pressing some switches. It took me a long while to discover but it made the "Find the 4th McGuffin" easier by a long shot.
Tried that, but then it get's blocked off by a floating platform. You need to get the monitor first, then drain the water afterwards. It's stupidly hard either way.
@@redhotsonic There should be _another_ switch on the right pathway in the "intersection" where the floating platform is. Pardon the vague explanation but when I get onto my computer again I'll try to replicate that again if it wasn't clear!
Yeah, there's two switches to lower the water. The first one lowers the water too early; making it impossible to get onto the correct path for the McGuffin. The second one as already explained, lowers a floating platform and blocks access to the McGuffin. Unless I did the sequence wrong...
@@redhotsonic That's strange huh. The way it worked with me was that the first switch made the platform block the path and the second one lowered it enough. I found this after a quick search and, while it is severely outdated (Sonia has a spindash and a double jump, lol) I think they haven't changed the Special Stage layout through versions. (Note: It's certainly not the version I played. But the stage seems like what I remember it being.) th-cam.com/video/IkBlvnd-HEs/w-d-xo.html The segment starts at 3 minutes. Does it seem like what you've went through in your playthrough?
In that video, 3:57, those two green blocks is what I was talking about. Huh, they hit the first switch, then jumped up quickly before the water fully decended. Then the second switch made it decend further, making the floating blocks go lower. Well I'm speechless. There is an easier way. It's not obvious in the slightest, so my rating for this game still stands =P
It must have been a lot of errors you came acrossed. And it really drove you nuts. 17:09 I love to tell you write Red Sonic. i think scripting is way too hard. But if you doing logic. It is way Soo Easy then scripting. I hope in the future that people. Will get off of Scripting. And get into Logic Bricks. Plugins on Easy. I recommend them to every project game. When Sonic Retro get into making logic brick. For there users they will probably. Manage to make A 2D game Better. And it will continue to get more better as they continue using logic Bricks. It is not too late for Sonic Retro to create there own Logic Brick Plug-In. BYE Red Sonic. i'm sure the guys who suggested this crap were fanboys that only played the game once and never looked back again. Also, good luck on the next one (oh boy)
"Common boring homing attack"?! That upsets me. the homing attack is, without a doubt, THE BEST MOVE IN SONIC EVER!!!!!!! How DARE you offend the homing attack like that.
well it doesn't matter. 2d fangames usually use the homing attack and it is fine there, also sonic megamix had it. colours ds had it, and most importantly, sonic 4. so it does make sense to have the homing attack in sonic hacks.

Pros:
- Eggman Nega's back.
Cons:
- The level design sucks ass.
Yo, redhotsonic that secret character you talked about at 4:15 is scourge.
The version of the ROM is the 2013 version (I think) there is a 2016 version on the 2016 sonic hacking contest website I couldn't get it the ROM to download but maybe it'll work for you.
Can this be played in an original Sega Genesis through an Everdrive?? It's great!!
But the stage seems like what I remember it being.)

The segment starts at 3 minutes.
How can We concetrate this mysterious character?😔😔😔
At least you didn't completely hate my bosses :( I had a really cool one planned for the arid zone
Will this game continue?
Sonia and IT'S NO USE will save the world! xd
It's no use to make jokes
help when i try to download i get HTTP ERROR 500
*Insert long essay about the rom hack and how I dislike it here*
Also, yes I don’t like this rom hack much. Though it has some good parts but it’s pretty bad. Sorry fans of the fan game.
Wow my faviroute show sonic underground. And I saw that secret character also
Yes
9:12 SEGA CD?! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?!
I can’t be the only one who prefers the sonic cd jump sound over the original
Rakan AlQahtani I prefer it slightly more than the original.
Nah, I kinda do too.
15:11 Was that intentional?
Damn I forgot how piss poor Sonic Hacks where in 2013.
I LOVE SONIC CD JUMP SOUND, SO WHAT!?
What about scourge the hedgehog
Nice review dude, keep up the good work.
The "S" stands for Satanic. Hence the level design.
Replace the S Factor with Sonic Megamix (in the beginning) and it'll all become more chaotic.
Blaze would have made a bit more sense to be playable but I think she is
Silver just can't escape the buggy games.
GET USED TO HEARING THIS game over music plays
My biggest problem with this is the fact that both characters lack the spindash
Loving all the review vids. Keep it up boss man
Has it been officially announced that it's canceled or not?
Pretty sure that mysterious character is Scourge.
My man doesn’t know who Scourge The Hedgehog is. He is who you call the “mysterious stranger”. Scourge is Anti Sonic.
Why didn’t sonic 2 recreation win? The level design is way better in your hack! Maybe you should judge a future hacking contest
he’s skrge the hedgehog from the archy comics
hey rhs, I revoke my answer for my fav jump sound, but spindash answer stays
Slivers flight kinda reminds me of blazes flight in Sonic rush
It must have been a lot of errors you came acrossed.
And it really drove you nuts. 17:09
I love to tell you write Red Sonic.
i think scripting is way too hard.
Good Job on your work 138 is me
---------------------------------------------------------
Whoeve made this game.
It not the end of the world keep working on your game.
The more you work on it.
The better you become.
Ast For a day i'm tweaking for tacos.
Yey
4:18 Oh no i know who he is my worst nightmare.
I wonder if people ever get it.
Scourge is in another dimension.
Just reminding that theyve sent an even more broken version to the hacking contest and won, using "make a better one" as an excuse doesnt improve the game elements
6/10 rating? damn that is generous, id say more like 3/10
Oh yeah there's my sis Sonia in this Video! :)
Manic The Hedgehog hi manic
Tablet Aussendienst hello. :)
Where IS manic
I Quite Like Ring Land Zone Act 1’s Music
Edit: Question: Would You Like Me To Make You A New Profile Picture? It's Ok If You Say No
What's up with people hating the CD jump SFX lmao
I love it a lot more than others lol
So everyone forgot about scourge being in this game
I think the secret character is Anti-Sonic from the Archie Comics.
You mean scourge right. Because he starts calling himself scourge after he became green
Isnt The S factor has a bug where if you run it on hardware it gives you an address error
Note: When you go into the giant ring of course it gives you address error
The secret character is Scorch the Hedgehog
im sure the version he played wasnt complete
i'm sure the guys who suggested this crap were fanboys that only played the game once and never looked back again.
Also, good luck on the next one (oh boy)
"Common boring homing attack"?!
That upsets me. the homing attack is, without a doubt, THE BEST MOVE IN SONIC EVER!!!!!!!
How DARE you offend the homing attack like that.
giga6152 That's design for most 3D Sonic game rqther then 2D Sonic game
well it doesn't matter. 2d fangames usually use the homing attack and it is fine there, also sonic megamix had it. colours ds had it, and most importantly, sonic 4. so it does make sense to have the homing attack in sonic hacks.
giga6152 For the 3D games, yeah, but for 2D, I’d imagine a double jump would be more useful
no way m8. you can still have a doublejump and a homing attack. an airdash is still better though
The secret character is scrouge from the sonic comics
I think S2R part one is better than S factor, I complete game AS Redhotsonic, and I didnt even beat S factor
So you just gonna glance over scourge?
Who let the glitches out 17:28
How do you go super on Android using genplusdroid?
The spike "Bug" Is a feature
17:28 split second of an unused sprite
actually there's a better version of the hack with the super music and the spindash
Where is blaze the shadanic glitch
Great i think i found the castelvania of sonic games.
15K for redhotsonic 👍
