So true...I reject the ideology that the "Spirit" only moves when there is screaming...yelling...hundreds of tongues and weird manifestations and generally disorder in church. Those behaviors are totally against what the word teaches about having orderly services as well as one of the fruits of the Spirit being self control.

I think of revival as people moved to prayer where they are at. In their communities, homes, churches...woven in between carrying on with their responsibilities of earthly life, taking care of kids, families, going to work and passing by moments of free time from TV or sports or whatever and instead giving those moments to humble repentance and pleas to God to have more moments toserve Him and others.

God will not be mocked! When you mentioned Francis Chan, and the purpose driven guy.... I knew this was false! Also my church back then read the Shack and loved it 💔

The more I think about how God saved me, the more and more thankful He saved me in a church that was thoroughly Reformed (e.g., TULIP) AND thoroughly believing in the ongoing working of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (e.g., nin-Cessationist). The result was absolutely sound theological preaching combined with the power of the Spirit (and absolutely amazing worship).
    It's not either/or, it's both/and.
    Blessings!

It is being reported that Asbury accepts the idea of gay Christian. Serious! I am a born-again believer who struggled with the sin of same-sex attraction post new birth. This is not an excuse for my sin, but it is imperative to share how the church, for the most part, dealt with same-sex attraction in the early years post my conversion (1966) and still does. I am 76 years old and experienced firsthand how the church did not know how to deal with believers like me. Instead, we were farmed out to so-called ex-gay ministries, such as Exodus; they all imploded because they were steeped in Freudian psychology and not biblical truth. We were promised healing from a sin of the flesh - and God does not heal sin. Consequently, many believers who struggled with same-sex attraction (a sinful desire of the flesh), failing to find the promised healing, gave up and resigned to living as gay men and women (This is a fact not an excuse for sinning.). I did for eight years. I've written a book that chronicles my journey, how I repented, left the "gay culture" and have learned to biblically deal with the sin of same-sex attraction and desires of the flesh in general. I did it by crying out to God for understanding through his Word. He honored that cry! The book is titled: "Glorified Rubble: Rebuilding the True You." I've learned: (1) There is no such thing as a "gay orientation." It is a sin orientation that is a manifestation of the effects of The Fall (original sin) which distorted all of humankind; (2) Sigmund Freud - a God-hater - invented the idea of sexual orientation: his belief that one's sexual desires determine personhood; he and his associates also coined the words heterosexual and homosexual. To side with Freud is to both sin against and insult God by replacing His creation ordinance (Gen. 26-28) with Freud's blasphemy; (3) Through regeneration of the new birth, we are created new creatures in Christ, but it does not eradicate the desires of the flesh: the need for on-going personal sanctification; and the same is true of same-sex attraction; (4) One of the benefits of being crucified with Christ (Rom. 6) is our will, which was enslaved to the sin nature we inherit from Adam, is freed to be exercised in obedience to God the moment we are born again (Martin Luther taught this.); (5) God does not heal the appetites of the flesh to make us obedient (a general misconception); God expects us to actively engage our "freed will" in putting these appetites to death through obedience, which allows the Holy Spirit to do the inner change (Rom. 8:13, 29): obedience brings change and not the other way around (Rom. 6:19): THE SAME IS TRUE FOR SAME-SEX ATRACTION. Rom. 6, 7 and 8 is the blueprint for biblical change and growth for ALL born gain believers. I recommend John MacArthur's book: "Hacking Agag to Pieces." He unpacks how the sins of the flesh are to be put to death post new birth. (6) To call oneself a gay Christian is to identify with a sin of the flesh, even if not acted on: a prison. It is a serious sin against Jesus who took our punishment so we can identify ourselves in Him as our righteousness and identity, not our sin. And the romantic feelings of same-sex attraction are as sinful as the lust. They are unnatural affections and one of the signs of the end times (2Tim: 3:1-5); (7) Sanctifying our minds in God's word, on-going repentance combined with on-going obedience, and trusting the Holy Spirit to do the inner work is the biblical way to deal with same-sex attraction and all desires of the flesh, the road to biblical change: conformed to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29). It leaves no room for living a lifestyle of engaging in same-sex practices (including gay marriage) and being conformed to Jesus at the same time! That is heresy!

A big problem today and every other day is we are not very good at waiting on the Lord ! A lot of the things we are tempted to fallow are short cuts to Holiness. We should understand that a teach able humble spirit takes time under the influence of the ordinary means of Grace. We see many temptations of Satan to help us along, with counterfeit moves of the Holy Spirit, that we miss what is right in front of us, Christ in dwelling the saints. This was a planned, well-timed marketing ploy for Greg Laurie's hollywood (lionsgate studio) movie. Every hollywood movie release has a strategy for drawing numbers ($$$$$$$$$) on opening weekend. It isn't an irony that the planned event at Asbury was timed to end days before the movie release. How many 'student's, staff or others behind the planned Asbury event were invited to the pre-screening of the film before it was ever released to the public (which influenced them to start their fake reviival) ? I vote - more than a few.

This has actually shared a lot in common with the revisiting of the Calvary chapel Jesus people and having the Jesus revolution movie out and being just as popular as what's going on in Asbury, it requires us to discern and give a Bible response to them. The Jesus people movement was just as much in error and had the same theological assumptions as this Finney revivalism. You need to engineer and strategize the masses to come to Christ and find the emotional outbreak to do the Lord's work. And it's all driven by the charismatic music. Just ask someone, "do you think that if these events didn't take place and Calvary chapel didn't let the culture change how we do Sunday worship, do you think those people wouldn't have gotten saved? Do the souls of the church rely on this stuff to happen?"

As someone saved in a quasi-Pentecostal church, almost 30 years ago, I’ve seen the ‘God in a box’ churches deny what happens. To oversimplify what I’m about to say, God calls us His way and I’ve found no scripture defining the rules on this. If one can be pulled in Gods direction through a text or tweet can you show where this cannot happen? Doesn’t some church music contain God’s word? Why limit God?
Think back before you were educated in Gods word, what got you in the door? This is my point.

Critic is always welcome, it will edify the church, the issue here is cessationism. A cessationist will see so many things amiss when he watches these kinds of fellowship. Also can't prayer and worship spark the move of God, there is so much bais here and emphasis on perfect theology. If this is a move of God, there will be repentance, faithful witness and emphasis on orthodox teaching. I would also want to hear about the queer people leading worship. It was shared by many prominent personalities, would like to know the truth. If it is true than whatever happening is definitely not from God. There will always be bad seeds, but focusing only on the bad to forward your narrative and not acknowledge any good that comes.
Definitely agree with the church part.

  • @suzanholland

That there are valid concerns--granted, that there needs to be discernment and "testing the spirits"--granted, but it is very sad to hear people mocking how someone describes the love of God coming over them as "nasty"... tragic, really. (That some false teacher--who was actually escorted out of the building btw and spent the rest of his time there in a hotel room posting fantasy on his social media, might use similar language to describe what he DID NOT experience in Hughes, does in no way discount the valid.) There is a great lack of understanding of what was actually going on on campus in this discussion (comments like "eating tacos at 2-3 in the morning" and "having fun" and "happy about missing class" --all these show complete ignorance of what was taking place.)
(and, for the record, Asbury has never called what happened starting Feb 8 a "revival"--that was something people on the outside have been calling it, and they did encourage people to attend their local churches for regular Sunday services)
Perhaps a great question would be, "Why is it that God repeatedly has chosen Asbury as a place to 'move'?" Another good question (for pastors especially), is "Why is it that people who attend church regularly are still so 'hungry' for something 'more'?" Asbury did an incredible job stewarding this whole thing!! (with mature leaders, admin, and staff always present and "guiding" from the sidelines) No disorder. No chaos. Rather: Order. Peace. Confession. Repentance. Salvation. People worshipping God. Much humility. Much love. Much hospitality. Much generosity. Many people have been praying for decades for this. PTL for HIs faithfulness!!

Without the Anointing of boldness to stand in the face of persecution, your powerless. The present Anointing that your resisting is as in Acts 2, Gentleness, to prepare our Heart. The Anointing to stand is Acts 4, Now is the time to prepare our hearts. Actually was told earlier today: There will be an Outpouring. Prepare for it. This Anointing of Gentleness is to help us prepare our heart. It's obvious your Lukewarm and need to pay attention to what Jesus is saying to the lukewarm church in Revelation 3:14 I've been there done that and Jesus is waking us up Gently presently and you think your a fruit examiner wen you need to examine your own heart. I tell you to open your Bible to page 1 verse 1 and read what He said is His boundaries are. God gave Himself clear ways to express Himslef so we know it's Him not to put Himself under any limit.

God has given us examples of what was happening when He added to the church by the thousands, it was by the preaching of His Word. Read the Scripture, God's Word tells us the boundaries. He is God Almighty, Creator of all, never changing, He is the same, yesterday, today and for all eternity and His Word will stand for eternity. How can people be saved if they don't repent of sin? How will they know they need a Savior if they don't know what sin is and why there is death! We have to go back to the beginning with Adam before anyone will really understand what the Gospel really is. You have start with the foundation and build on it. We no longer have an Acts 2 culture where they were brought up being taught the Garden of Eden events, the origin of sin, the need for a perfect sacrifice, repentance and our need for a Savior. We have a predominantly Acts 17 culture, people without the foundation having been laid into their upbringing, so we can't start at the end of the story, we must go back to the beginning. God's Scripture records this for us to learn from and follow His example.

@@grandmaryables I agree. My response was to the people who want to have an acts 17 culture. Basically I was saying you're not putting God in a box by listening to Him.

On the day of Pentecost the onlookers did not know what was happening they said , “they where drunk” so that does not say what is happening is not God’s Spirit. There was a lot of excitement in pass revivals, even in the great awakening. God is Sovereign and is able to draw people to himself by lowly means. This commentary is sad on many levels, and is not fully scriptural but mostly tradition.

The Gospel is not being preached. Christ Jesus is not exalted. Christ Crucified for your sin is the only way to Salvation. Salvation is not a human decision. Be not deceived.

@@kate60 Salvation is not a human decision , it is from the Lord who calls people to respond to the gospel. Christ crucified and rose again as been preached, but some refuse to believe it. I am not saying everything happening there is good. Test everything, hold on to what is good is a command. Not only test but hold on to the good. Be not bias!
