If you watched this movie and didn't fall in love with the Irish, you don't have love in your heart. I love most, if not all of John Waynes movies but this one will always be my favorite. And that makes it my favorite movie of all time since no one ever made a better movie than John Wayne.

No decisions were a very common occurrence in prize fighting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. McLaglen was reputed to be a pretty good fighter who did have "a jaw of granite," but Johnson was on a whole different level. Wish there was some film of a couple of McLaglen's fights. Would've been cool to watch.

Protests and Boycotts, Cinemas vandalized, the makers and the actors would all have to apologize over and over again. Maureen had just had a baby when they started filming this movie. After the Dragging scene was filmed she was covered with Bruises and Sheep Shit from head to toe. She truly was the only woman who could match John Wayne on Screen.
And it almost wasn't. Republic only agreed to finance it if both stars and the director, John Ford, agreed to make a Western under Republic first. They made Rio Grande, the 3rd installment in Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy" (following RKO's Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon). The Quiet Man was the only Republic film to win an Oscar (for Cinematography).

Victor McLaughlin was a heavyweight who once fought Jack Johnson. He was the real deal but perfect for casting as the big clumsy bully in this great movie. Great choreography when he tries to put that clumsy right on Wayne, gets off balance and Wayne tags him in the midsection.

John Wayne not in a western...and probably his greatest film ever. John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara -- what a team! In Ireland too! Some would say he was cruel & abusive. This is a love story of the greatest caliber. "I'll be going on home now, I'll have the supper ready for ya...." then that gorgeous Maureen O'Hara expression as she turned away -- was priceless. I don't even know if Wayne knew she did that. And he did it again with Maureen in McLintock. I loved them both. She did deserve to get some extra pay for some of those scenes. Don't judge it. Enjoy it in the spirit in which it was made. It's a different generation, different traditions & we have no right to judge anything in the past. People did what they did based on society then. Not today. In those days there was a dowry. Not today. I agree with one earlier post -- next to Casablanca, this is one of the greatest films ever made. It's a true thing that unless a man is truly vicious and sadistic, most women like a strong man. Thus the way women like "bad boys" and pretty white women wind up with thugs, or Mafia types, and the saying "nice guys finish last"...women who ought to know better don't go with men who are nice and sweet. (sometimes they are the creepy ones, actually). The problem is when men who are nasty inside let it burst forth without any apparent reason. Women....men. Complicated. And yes, we cannot just switch back and forth as it suits us. Maybe we just like playing for fun.... BUT the older I get the more I get this movie. As a little kid watching this on TV, I just felt really uncomfortable about John Wayne dragging Maureen O'Hara about, because as a child of divorced parents, I felt maybe my dad was mean to my mom. (turns out he never hit her, he cheated on her)
Love this movie. Especially the look on the Duke's face when he made up his mind. And even though it looks like he was being rough with Maureen he was extremely gentle those two were so perfect for each other in all their movies together. And then the look on the Duke's face as she was walking away you could almost hear the thought " Women!"😆

A co-worker of mine was born and raise in Castlemaine and in the area this was filmed. He told me as a small child he was one of the extras in the background when the movie was being made.

The Irish is a complicated people, 'tis we are. As I'm only 1/4 Irish I can only speak from 1/4 of meself, but it surely seems as this movie does bring it out in me, and so it does.
Your understanding of the culture is skewed and the reasoning is misunderstood. Women have wanted men as protectors for eons. Men prefer women who can bare children and make a home. If your man wont stand up for you and protect your home why would you stay and make a home with him? It works throughout nature. If your mate allows you to do as you please and disrespect and disregard them it wont take too long for you to walk away. You dont have to beat your old lady but you cant be a doormat for her and her family. This is the sociological issues we have today, break up of the family and high crime rates.

I’m not advocating a return to the ideals of that time but life and the world was easier to understand, men had their roles and women had theirs. A superb movie, and the two stars were great, but the movie was also a tour de force for the magnetic uber-Irishman Barry Fitzgerald!
To me the funniest part is how the whole county drops everything to come and see.

McLagen would have been 64 when this scene was filmed in the summer of 1951. On the old side for a prolonged fist fight.

No wonder John Wayne died of lung cancer - I once tried counting how many ciggies the Duke got through in this film and lost count every time - all I can say is far too many.
That being said I love this film - one of my all time favourites; must have seen it 30-40 times 👍🏻
When he was directing he was up to six packs a day

The Irish is a complicated people, 'tis we are. As I'm only 1/4 Irish I can only speak from 1/4 of meself, but it surely seems as this movie does bring it out in me, and so it does.

Your understanding of the culture is skewed and the reasoning is misunderstood.
Women have wanted men as protectors for eons. Men prefer women who can bare children and make a home. If your man wont stand up for you and protect your home why would you stay and make a home with him? It works throughout nature. If your mate allows you to do as you please and disrespect and disregard them it wont take too long for you to walk away.
You dont have to beat your old lady but you cant be a doormat for her and her family. This is the sociological issues we have today, break up of the family and high crime rates.

@@jacc9061 It’s just that I see so much confusion in our culture now. I admit that I preferred it when men opened doors for ladies and tipped their hats... I’m of THAT generation - I like being a ‘girl’ and knowing I have physical limitations - I don’t want or need to do a job better suited to a man. Have you noticed that in the last 40 years men are becoming smaller in stature and women larger? I also admit that I’m infatuated with John Wayne so I’m not not unbiased. I appreciate your courtesy. @@margpetit1 Well without starting a row with you it wasn’t men’s idea to change society. I’m not advocating a return to the ideals of that time but life and the world was easier to understand, men had their roles and women had theirs. As a part of that change it also seems like at every opportunity over the last 30-40 years women have gone out of their way to emasculate men when they acted like a real man and the world we have now is a result of that and now they complain there are no real men! The expression “What women want” was Aldo meant to highlight men’s lack of understanding of women but I have said for a number of years that how the hell are we supposed to magically know what women want when women don’t know what they want!
@@tsrgoinc I totally agree with you! I’m not now, nor have ever been a ‘women’s libber’ or whatever they are calling themselves now. I preferred it when women enjoyed being women and men being men. Certainly some things needed changing, but total role reversal has gone too far and caused much turmoil in this country. I feel sad for the youth of our Nation and I’m glad I won’t be around to see what will become of Her. (I couldn’t find the thread you were referring to in your response, but I have no argument with your stand here.)
