Using trebochet design ideas for their ancient cranes/hoists was brilliant.
Why so many things were abandoned, as you say, I think has to do with, maybe noy better, but different technologies that became available.
Someon asked once, why we can't build like they used to: one reason for that is lack of cooperation. Getting people to follow your ideas and plans, the way you want them done, takes money, and causes headaches because people always want to argue over doing it 'a better way'. Sad truly.
