    This video is as long as any "Ever Heard of" video without having any "recap" or "revisions with Ros Mo" section so I really had a lot to say about this series.

    I think its a marketing strategy to use a popular actor to dub the lead character. Unfortunately Netflix underestimated the Filipino viewers taste in watching anime wherein we don't have any fuckin' care who dubs the series as long as they can give justice to the character. We are more invested in storylines and character development.

    The only thing that bothered me about the Tagalog dub is that, as you said, Alex is emotionless and the voice sometimes is emotionless and is on this some weird same frequency. 😂 But I do like the Filipino dub better cuz I don't have to read the subtitle and can watch the action scenes freely and we gotta support the other dubbers so they can get more gigs hehe

    As a Filipino who knows next to nothing about Filipino folklore and such, I did feel that the way they presented the information was a bit overwhelming to me in my opinion. If you are also like me but thought that they presented the information at a good pace and such, then good for you. I couldn't get completely invested in its lore and characters because of it especially since they only had 6 episodes to work with and really fit a lot into those episodes. While I still liked the show I only wished that they made more episodes to really help flesh their characters and mythology at a nice pace that doesn't feel overwhelming. I most certainly understand the appeal of the show however and if you really loved the show and such then kudos to you!

    • @chrono-glitchwaterlily8776
      @chrono-glitchwaterlily8776 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I feel like it's kinda good that they aren't fleshed out. If any other studios decide to make another series not related to Trese, the Filipino monsters would still contain that certain uncertainty to it. As someone who isn't familiar with the mythologies, I'm at the very least excited for the potential of Chinese folklore as well. If they decided to go on the same place, I wouldn't be opposed. If they went to what you said, I'd like it still. Depends on how they handle it :)

    • @allankanegalian6401
      @allankanegalian6401 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it would have been helpful to unfamiliar viewers if the show presented at least a bit of info at the end of each episode. like a little infographic about the creature that was shown in the episode to give the viewer context, additional they could strategically place this info in any episode to enhance the storytelling.

    • @unlimon6382
      @unlimon6382 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think in some parts, especially the last episode, there was a lot of exposition. And yes, all characters and their relationships with each other could have been fleshed out more. But I also think the mythology part doesn't need much explanation. I didn't know much at all either, but it keeps up the mystery. As much as I also want to know what everything is and what the deal is with each thing, it has to keep some mistery, and for me that part looks good the way it is.
      It's the prophecy part and, as I said, the characters and relationships that I think needed more time.

My knowledge on Filipino folklore was close to 0 and so just seeing an animated series that shows them was awesome for me. At times, I did feel a little confused on what certain characters were or represented, but I was so intrigued that I searched them up after watching episodes. Twas a series that I don't regret watching for sure; especially with all that I learned. (And yes! It is available overseas~ I am from the U.S.. ^.^)

    The biggest mythological thing in the series was solid bar of chocnut. the size and it not crumbling after being opened is supernatural.
    whoever made that scene must have seen a chocnut in a supermarket and a piece of chocnut in google, associated it with chocolate bar but never knew that inside the chocnut, which looked like a chocolate bar on the outside, were smaller chocnuts

    Hello, Mexican Netflix got Trese and I was supposed to watch the first episode, then sleep... I didn't, it hooked me up, finished all episodes in one night.
    My only problem with the different mythological creatures presented was that not much information was given for them, like I would have liked to know their names and characteristics as well as the myth the bring, but they did not feel overwhelming. They also gave a wider view on the Trese world, which I liked.
    With that said I loved this show! I took a guess once I heard the English dub to say it was Filipino because accents sound similar, but not quite, people that say it sounds Mexican is because they haven't heard other accents except that one! Frustrating, but I really liked the show and definitely going to read the comic because I'm intrigued!

    1.) Talking about representation, it does matter a lot. You don't really see a lot of great Filipino animation, and the animation industry is heavily diluted with Western and Japanese animation. It's refreshing to finally see our own culture represented on screen with quality and care. 2.) I understand why they needed to cast a popular name in order to rake up viewers. This is a first major animated series for Filipinos, and there were a lot of risks taken for the producers to give a Filipino-themed story a shot. This makes the success of this series crucial so that we can have more in the future. Of course, I also understand that we could hire a known name and face, but still have quality dubbing (I'm pretty sure there could be a lot of other known actors who might do better in dubbing Trese).

    Yes it's shown overseas, especially in the US. Most of the English dub cast are Filipino-Americans with Trese's English voice actress being Filipino-Canadian. Like you said, some of "small" criticisms is they sound Hispanic. Some of us pointed out that you would get that Filipino-American accent which is mainly English with some degree of exposure of Tagalog or Tagalog accent. Forgot who it was, but one of the voice actors said that to get somewhat the accent, they just have to think about their parents when they speak to them in English.

    The only thing i didn't like was supposedly trese getting a love interest in the adapdation.. yeah of couse she can fall inlove but as an avid comic reader, she never had one and the story is better off without one- just focusing with the mytholoical creatures here in the philippines. Although i will have no problem if the love interest does not overpower or change the theme and PLEASE- don't even use it to cater or impress those people who thinks every film should have atleast romance (im glad i ended that phase years ago). I see a lot of people hyping up trese cuz she is sapphic and yeah- female or not her love interest is... I just hope the animated version will do justice of what really the comic wants to portray and be a money-sucking commercialized anime...

    That's true, tho I saw a lot of people wanting Glaiza De Castro to dub Trese and I couldn't agree more!
    I hope these Filipino Producers give proper recognition to more suitable and professional individuals; giving the small content creators a chance of portrayal, and hit the nail thereーwe need quality, not quantity. Yet, most are throwing away our very own local talents! 👁👄👁

    Trese is something weird for me since i really like this kind of shows like supernatural or buffy and i wanted an animated version so long like a serious gravity falls and we have the animated supernatural which i like even tho not many like it but i wanted more. So i though trese would be the one to fill that void for me but it didn't really catch me like the others maybe its because am more desensitize to Pilipino myths & legends because i live here or maybe i didn't like the story structure with the constant flash back at beginning of the episodes without those flash back have any significant meaning on those episode and only got resolution at end of the season either way i didn't particularly like trese nor do i hate it but i do wish for a season 2 maybe then i would like it until then am gonna try looking for the comics which i see here & there when i was a kid but never in a complete set

    I'm not saying this because the internet are siding on Glaiza being a perfect pick for Trese but ever since I watched her act as Pirena, I saw how she changes her pitch and the way she speak her lines. It made the scene she's in way better and I'm saying this as someone who prefer to watch anime than live action.
    Glaiza caught my attention because of the way she spoke in her acting as Pirena.
    The overall feel of Glaiza's Pirena felt like your definition of Shay's Trese.
    However, I will give credit for Liza trying her best. She'll grow accustomed to voicing Trese as the seasons continue. I just hope Trese gets a season 2.

    From brazil to say: The only thing I didn't liked was not finding enough sources on internet to understands the things going on there. I knew what was being showed and I liked it, a lot, but at the same time not knowing part of the folklore made me think I was losing too much on context. In the end it feels like a awesome show that was degraded to "only" good because I could not understand the creatures there.
    To futher elaborate that let me give you all a example. There is a book here about some children running into every folktale know around there. Like num-si-pode a woman that appears at night asking for cigarettes and at the time of this legend streets lamps worked on oil, so fire, and she would grow and light her cigarettes on the lamp. Curupira a guardian of the forest that would scare you if you hunt too much. Cabeça-de-cuia a man cursed for killing his own mother with a bone of a mule.
    Me saying that sounds shallow, now imagining not fiding even shallow explanations of the creatures there.
    Who is that goblin that Trese calls from time to time? What are those thunder guys? The show does it's best to "explain" them without having to stops to actually tell you and it is good for that. Might be me the problem but finding actual good fonts to understand folklore of other cultures is dificult and might take a tiresome amount of time and effort to learn. Seeing someone talking so well of something that for me was only averange makes me think that is worth learning about Philippines legends.
    Simplifying all I said. It was good but it was not awesome beause I could not relate to most of it and the legends creatures were unknow. Somehow that made it also stick with me because since I knew nothing I paid atention to every detail. As a ending note. Can someone tell me if Trese's mom "job" was "real"? Like there are legends about people like her, the same about her father and her "job"?

    • @jujuoffbeat1585

      Filipino here. Our mythology, especially these aswangs (monsters featured in the film like that creep), are mostly a word of mouth and on scholarly books. Or that I'm just not well aware of it. But I really want to say some things 😂 So actual definitions of it are hard to find in the internet.
      Anyway, in the Philippine mythos the Goblin are called Nuno in the Philippines. It is creatures who live in a small patch of land, or by the trees and as a courtesy we say "tabi-tabi po" so we will not be cursed (like have sickness). In Trese world though, I don't know if it's the same or what other things they added for Nuno but that's what he's based from.

    • @ismaelrodrigues1543
      @ismaelrodrigues1543 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jujuoffbeat1585 so "tabi-tabi po" is something along the lines of a nicely said "Don't cuse me and stay away." Nice. We have a equivalent thing where we knock in a piece of wood three times to ward of curses and bad omens.

    • @jujuoffbeat1585
      @jujuoffbeat1585 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ismaelrodrigues1543 yes, we have that too 😄
      Also, I have other comment but I think it keeps deleting? But Alexandra and his father's job are called Babaylan-Mandirigma? Babaylan are real people, in pre-colonial times. They are shamans, usually women. Or faith healers. A modern version close to it are albularyo, who have connection to spiritual/supernatural forces. There are people who actually do it for a living, until now. But not a very go-to medical service I personally think 😅 Mandirigma on the other hand is simply warrior in Filipino. If you are more interested, you can watch Kirby Araullo's educational vlogs here in YT. He's a historian, and he even talked about Trese. Very nice to hear the similarities of our culture
