      teufelskerl001 Glad you liked it mate and glad it helped. Yes, very awkward to do with my arms having to stretch round the camera but that was the best angle to shoot the video to give a good view of face plate and levers.... I did nearly manage to knock vice over a couple of times as you notice vice wobble around now and again LOL!!!! It was fun to do. Thanks again ;o))))

    It would have be useful if you explained how to know youre in a false gate and how to avoid them. Im struggling to pick a lever padlock open when i can pick it closed in seconds so I assume im hitting false gates. Any tips for not getting stuck or knowing that your stuck? If a lever has completely ceased id assume it means your in the true gate or the false gate?

    • @waddac2
      @waddac2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do not know you are in a false gate until you get in one... The bold moves back a bit and locks up, meaning re-set and start again. You have to try and remember which lever had the false gate and where it was (High or Low).. Then pick accordingly on others. Picking lever locks is just lick pin tumblers, meaning you are looking for levers that bind first.
      Yes, correct in saying if seized... as you are in a false gate... as said above, remember which seized... re-set and go again. Normally when I pick these I first treat levers lick security pins and tickle through the stack... On the odd ones, I apply tension and just throw levers up to try and see what is happening and adjust tension etc.

    This is a very clearly explained tutorial which is even better than the locksmithing course I attended in Hong Kong.
    Please inform me where can I buy the ICL curtained mortise lever lock pick as I saw one unhappy customer complaining to Bosnianbill that his ICL ordered from a UK vendor did not match with the photo depicted.
    Excellent Job! Thanks.

    • @waddac2
      @waddac2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for your kind words Roland regarding my video. It really means a lot when reading great comments such as yours Sir. I did not purchase my ICL pick brand new, I purchased them used and love them to bits. There is a slight newer model made that may have been the ones in the complaint to Bill. Not Bills problem regarding picks though as he has nothing to do with the company. Not sure if I saw the comment to Bill and not sure where the customer purchased them from, but would like to know?
      Thanks again,
      Rich (waddac2)

    I once lost my keys to an ERA Fortress, BS3621 5 lever lock. The locksmith was unable to pick it. He took over 3 hours to drill (& eventually) destroy the lock to gain access. Needless to say I fitted another!

    • @waddac2
      @waddac2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ERA Fortress can be a pain to pick as very low levers, so pick wires have issues getting under the low levers. Many locksmiths will not want to tackle them and prefer to drill. WOW!!!!! Took him 3 hours, bet he charged a fortune. Most locksmiths will carry drill templates to let them know where to drill to save time. Here is a video of me picking an ERA Fortress some time ago.

      @@1658iain Well, for three hours work £120 was not too bad. Yes you did the right thing with putting another fortress on. I hate UPVC doors and all mine are good solid wood and I too use 5 lever BS Curtained mortice locks as potential thieves will look and walk away. Also security wise, my fences are low so passers by can see my doors. Too many people use high fences for privacy, but if watched by thieves when occupants leave the house on certain days for shopping etc... Thief knows how long they will be, scale the fence and are hidden from public eye and, many modern doors use Euro cylinders... I still as say, like 5 levers.

    • @waddac2
      @waddac2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1658iain You certainly do have the perfect combination if using an ERA Fortress and also Avocet ABS. Yes, when leaving a key in one side of of a Door and try to use key on other side, you will have no joy 90% on opening the door. Many people have left a key in a door in side the house and when returning cannot get back in through that door.

    I had always wondered what mortice/curtain locks were. What keeps you from using a pick that is wider at the end, so it manipulates all of the gates at the same time? Are the gates somehow shaped differently? I suppose it would help if I could see the key. Thanks for the great vid and taking the time to build that for us.

    What happens if you have to pick the lock from the opposite side - for example if the door is only accessible from one side?

    • @waddac2
      @waddac2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can pick these bolt side or lever side pending what angle they are situated in a door (Right or Left). You also need to use another pick wire pending what side the lock is in the door.

      +waddac2 , Im an amateur (I work at DIY)- I have a friend who has a stuck 3 lever mortice, Legge. Havent been down yet but have practiced on 3 old ones I have here. I modified an old key (ground a flat on the shaft and took off the material so there is just a pin sticking up to engage the v in the bolt, and then Im using a pick wire to flip the levers up - it works well. But I wondered how I would do it if I could only access the reverse side of the lock.- because the key is then in the way of the pick wire. I can get to the inside of the door but not the outside - because theres a walled garden with a locked gate. Thanks for getting back to me - videos are v helpful

      +Ian Straub Good thinking regarding using the key to make it into a tensioner. This does work well with 5 lever curtained mortice locks as it assist in turning the curtain to get to levers by using a pick wire to slide into a grove down the key which can be made with a file. However I see your problem with a 3 lever lock and adapted key. Instead of using the key to tension it use a wire, made from same wire you used to lift the levers. Here is a video I did a while back that may help.

      Hi Bud, I am not a lock smith and just a hobby picker. If your wanting to be a lock smith please do not waste your hard earned cash on doing a course. On a course they will just explain what locks are and show you bits and pieces on lock picking and explain how a lock works and also show you how to pick and rake locks and possibly how to drill locks etc.. At the end of the day it is up to the individual to practice after doing the course. Some people are good at picking and others not too good. If you are wanting to be a lock smith you can learn all you need to by watching videos on TH-cam and also joining forums and asking questions. Like you say, courses are VERY expensive. Also if you think you need to do a course to be a registered lock smith, you don't as there is no licence needed to be a lock smith. If you wanted, you could today buy a set of picks, get some other tools and a van and set up your own business up. Like I say mate, please do not waste your money on a course. Watch videos and ask questions plus practice. Use the money to buy tools etc.
      Regards,
      Rich (waddac2)
