When we started looking for land, we wanted to be closer to the Canadian border as my wife had a lot of relatives in the Ottawa region. To our surprise, we discovered that upstate New York had a LOT of land at very good prices (ton's of former dairy farms are simply fallow now). We were looking for some smaller plots but land prices dropped pretty quickly the more you bought. We ended up getting more than we had anticipated but the price was too good to pass up. So we ended up with 30 acres of beautiful forested land of mostly hardwoods, primarily sugar maples. We built our home from scratch ourselves (2 old farts in our 60's) and just recently finished that after two long years of building. But it has been worth it! We're also off-grid and loving it. I just wish I'd taken lots more videos that we have uploaded, but when you're building 24/7 to get a roof over your head, you do what you gotta do.
