Repointing Our Field Stone Barn
When we bought this old retired dairy farm, one of the selling features was this beautiful old field stone barn. It has seen a lot of wear and tear over the years and is in need of repair. There are a lot of opinions on how to best replace the mortar between these old stones, but with the help of some of our viewers, we opted to try out lime mortar.
Lime mortar is the "old fashioned" option that was used in nearly all stone and brick work prior to the 1920s. It has been replaced with cement mortar options found in most stone work today. Lime mortar has a greater ability to flex, breath, and absorb moisture, making it a good option when working with stone. If water is trapped within the stones, rather than able to seep into the mortar, the stones themselves can become damaged or weak. For these reasons and to go back to the original intended materials, we opted for the lime.
We are using a 1:2.5 mixture of lime and masonry sand. We removed as much of the old mortar as possible (this revealed that the current mortar is crumbling to bits), saturated the stone with water, and installed the new lime mortar. Because the lime needs to cure in a damp environment for a couple of weeks, we will maintain the humidity or spray the wall as necessary. This also makes this project important to complete before the fall freezing temperatures hit.
Thank you for all of the suggestions of lime mortar and resources. Here are a few I found to be very helpful:

    I’m so excited to watch you save your barn. I’m in Wisconsin and my dad has a similar barn, but the foundation is solid. The upstairs is another story. He saved his barn by putting up metal for the roof and side. The beans are soo full of powder post beetles etc. He farmed until 10 years ago. It’s going to be so sad to see this part of history die. Keep up the good work. I’m cheering you on from the fox valley!!

    Obviously the size of the parents does matter, and perhaps it's different in cows than in horses, but I recall an article in Horse Illustrated from when I was a wee obsessed girl, about a study where they crossed Shetlands with Clydesdales, half with the small mom and half with a small dad. (Mature, healthy, experienced moms under vet supervision, of course) IIRC, the babies were born proportionate to the size of the mom, but by the time they were 2 year olds there were no statistical differences in height or weight. I'm curious if there is a similar thing in cattle?

    • @scottfamilyhomestead
      @scottfamilyhomestead 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My understanding is that horses have the ability to self-regulate calf size while most cattle can not. Breeding a smaller breed cow to a larger breed bull can cause the calf to need birthing assistance or could even result in a stillborn. Even shoulder and head size needs to be considered when crossing similar sized breeds of cattle.

No risk to the mama they are just getting their dual purpose needs met with a hardy breed that is near bulletproof.
