Mixing politics with music really does no favors to either. Usually, it just doesn't work. Good music should be timeless, as in "Into the Mystic." Political content is time-sensitive and is usually outdated as soon as the music gets to the public. There are rare exceptions but that's the rule. I agree with some other commenters here that a few hard-hitting songs directed at the mandates and lockdowns would have been sufficient. But Van needed to get some things off his chest and that's what was happening at the time and he had good reason to be angry and sarcastic. I mean, these mandates were, and still are, killing people. Still, it's probably a better tack to focus on something positive in a bad situation. I'm reminded of Peter Gabriels's song "Biko."
Van the Man does his own thing. He may not care what his fans from early in his career think. I saw him 25 years ago and he basically performed stuff no one in the audience were into...no hits at all. Keep rockN
Morning Scott. Thanks for your honesty regarding the Van Morrison album and totally get your frustration at the so called "reviewers" who don't research near enough. The album cover is really clever in regard to the album content. Thanks for the video. Floss.
does "what's it gonna' take?" suck? yeah. more or less. i didn't expect van to go along with covid mandates or anything else really. 5 or 6 songs are more than passable. the gentleman loves to bitch. he can still sing remarkably well. you made me go through it which is fine because he's van morrison!!!
Can TOTALLY appreciate the completionist in you, for sure! I like the early Van much more than the later stuff. Wonder what inspires him (if anything) at this point in his career. Might explain that "bitter" vibe this one is giving off. 🤷♂
So interesting to get your take on the Morrison album. Like you, I always thought you can't go wrong with any VM albums. Thanks for such an honest and thought-provoking review.
It's the worst album of my favorite artist. It's also, unfortunately, his most recent collection of originals, and he's about to turn 79. Great review

Clarification: The illustration is a reference to actors Kevin McCarthy and Dana WYNTER in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. (I said Dana Andrews! 😮)
