This is THE BEST explanation of the intricacies of the Purdue shuffle I have seen. Been trying to master this beat for a long time, and I’d almost given up because something wasn’t quite right. It was the rim shot missing and stick height was too high on the L hand. Thanks for this lesson!! There’s hope for me yet.

Hi Dimitri, thank you so much for a fabulously clear lesson. I could suggest that the hi hat “accented” first Right and ghosted second right is so important and could helpfully be written on your scribe as R l r, instead of R l R. It is just to avoid a student thinking it might be two equally dynamic rights on the hi hat. The variations you go on to demonstrate are fantastic as is the linked video with Purdie…Much appreciated. Peter (U.K.)

Ghost notes are pretty much the indicator of drumming competence.

I'm a self-taught 80s drummer and Ghost Notes have really not been a part of my repertoire 561 now and I'm trying to round out my skills and I'm finding adding Ghost Notes have opened up a whole new world to me and the Purdie Shuffle is opening up a universe

As a 20 years old, I was a passionate drummer since I was 5 and change to piano as my main instrument, now I want to play drums and master and you made it easier for me, this is my first comment on your video but I almost watch all of it and it brings me so much confidence that I could improve in less than a year as I have experienced when I was young. Thanks a lot!

I've been working on this for a bit and I can play the shuffle with various kick patterns and with very subtle ghost notes but the down up hi hat dynamic is crushing me. I can play the shuffle at 150 bpm just have to drill the hi hat technique even more I guess. A lot of the coolest implementations of this beat have hi hat barks which isn't covered here as well.

I had to work on it very carefully too! Just taught some workshops on the motion actually... you need to systematically do the motion EXTREMELY SLOW along with your other limbs for a long period of time! Don't do it at 150 :D

the beat by david garibaldi from What is Hip is very essential as well. Purdie did a similar beat, check out purdie's beat in Aretha Franklin's song Rock Steady, another iconic pattern ppl should learn

I would go one step further and say if you learn Rosanna, particularly the outro part where he moves to off beats and the ride, then you are really covering a serious amount of ground. That teaches you to line up snare accents with softer upstrokes on the cymbals which is quite hard to master but essential for messing about with the shuffle to the fullest.

Just mastered Porcaro’s version (at around 130 bpm). Problem is, Rosanna is 160. Other Purdie variations aren’t as fast. Takes technique. “Santeria” is another great song to work on. Currently working on the triad matrix:)

Interesting you say Santeria, also a good groove. Drummer from sublime was soo good at playing those swung grooves and reggae type grooves As well, cool thing about him was he’d play all those groove double handed on the high hats which gives it just a little different feel as well. Love jeff and Purdie the og’s of these grooves as well as bonham and drummer from sly and the family stone.
