When possible, you can also use your leaf blower to get some of the snow moved out of tight spots. Yikes that is a ton of snow!! Hoping you guys are ok.
Cheap insurance is a Kerosun heater and two 5 gallon cans of kerosene. It's more than enough heater to keep a house alive if you move it from room to room. I speak from experience making it a week during a power outage. It'll take more than 10 gallons for a week. Kerosene will also last longer than stated in a sealed container.
Wow - that is crazy. We just got a standby generator, and I hadn’t thought about that. Always used a portable, or tractor powered PTO generator, and plowed to get them out and plugged in, but the standby one just sits tight and gets snowed in…. Thanks for posting!
Wow what a job at least you have your son helping you a very important job to get done here in Ontario Canada we don’t have any snow yet it’s all across the border be safe out there here from Ontario Canada I am about 1.30 hours from Niagara Falls❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
I've seen some homes with those GENERAC generators placed on top of metal or concrete stand. About 3 or 4 feet off the ground. I guess it's a good idea, especially living in cities like Buffalo, NY, with the "lake effect snow events."
I think for storms id have some pvc that is 4 foot long that i could attach to the exhaust and intake for your furnace and hot water that would extend the exit for the pipes up four feet that you could just slip on the pipes and take off once the storm is over. At least that way you wouldnt have to dig them out constantly and you wouldnt lose you heat or hot water. I portable windbreak with a cover on two sides for the generator would stop the snow from drifting over the vents in the generator.
A friend of mine did the pvc extension and his heater shut off due to the resistance caused by the additional length and elbows. If you're within the manufacturers guidelines for distance to the vent outside I think it would work. I like the portable windbreak...I should study that. Thank you and be safe.
Praying for you guys. Be careful. Shoveling that amount of snow has given ppl heart attacks. I had to hire someone to do mine because my doctor said your days of snow blowing are over 😢
Hi Kristen I didn’t complain, just a project that had to done during the storm. I’m very fortunate and we faired very well during the storm. Many did not it’s sad. Happy new year 🎆
I'm glad we didn't get any of the snow, my son sold our torpedo heaters to his buddy, just before this apocalypse, even though I told him, 'I'm glad we have these heaters in case a snowfall hits'. What a doofus ..
I was about to say you should use that awesome skid loader with the blower to do that work but at the end of the video I think I saw some ornamental items buried under the snow in the yard. Take it easy, no snow is worth a cardiac event. Happy New Year Marauder!
I have worked on a lot of remote communications sites in Alaska and where snow is a potential problem for the generator it is elevated. Even lifting this generator on a 2-3 foot stand would help. Also it wasn’t uncommon to have snorkel vents coming out of the top of the enclosure.
With a sudden bomb blizzard, perhaps consideration should be given to the generator; a temporary wooden box structure with two pipes, one for fresh air intake and the other a tightly clamped exhaust pipe. Both pipes well above anticipated snow height with a U bend on top to prevent snow depositing inside each pipe. Maybe temporarily extending those two pvc outlets too?
I think I would be off adding some pipeline to that for the winter to raise it up about 6 feet that way yet air and exhaust still working I would check with the furnace man to make sure you could do that put it up so high just for the winter so you don’t have that problem again with that much snow if you’re sorry for you guys holy crap and hello from Michigan God bless😎😇
An issue I have found with portable gas generators is carburetor icing. A friend showed me the solution, place a tarp over the generator or install it inside a open tent. The heat made will stop the icing.
This was definitely educational. I'm not sure what you could do to possibly alleviate this problem in the future. One thing is for sure, I get the feeling you're smart enough to figure it out. ✌️🙏👍 Y'all stay safe.
@@maraudermitchelli An idea just popped in my head & I was wondering if the exhaust valves could be moved higher up on the structure. If needed, maybe landscaping could be used to disguise the changes.
@@AdirondackHomestead That is a condescending comment rooted in assumption, ignorance & just plain stupidity. Obviously it has never occurred to you that not everyone is physically able to do what you suggested or it's just not feasible for a myriad of reasons. Either way, maybe karma won't bite you too hard for being so rude.
Need to put some extension pipes on the intake and exhaust for heat. Don't glue then so you can take them off after winter. Add a "T" too, so water vapor can escape.
Glad to see you got everything up and running. Too bad you couldn't build a small covering structure over the Generator. Gotta get your son out there more often. That's a young man's job!!!! Be safe.

@@maraudermitchelli we live in Buffalo, NY(really Tonawanda which is where storm hit very hard) and our furnace vents are in the back of our house where we have 2 back doors that were so covered with snow that my husband had to go out the front and around the house to keep them clear. It was terrifying as he had to do this several times. If you figure out a way to keep them clear please post it. It would seem these storms are not done with us.
Love your preparedness! Considering the direction of most storms through your area (blowing from west to east, would moving your generator to the opposite side of the house help eliminate this in the future? Or perhaps building a barrier, like a wood privacy fence to prevent the drift from reaching the generator?? I can't see the other side of the house, but I suspect it doesn't have as much blown snow, just asking...
Could you build a plywood box to cover the furnace and hot water vents? 5" high x 3" wide x 1" deep should do it, place some stones on the top- to keep it from blowing away
Might be a good idea to put extension on those vent pipes for you heat, and hot water before a storm comes the next time, the generator is another story however....
Ok just to let you know where I'm coming from, in September I was standing in 2'6" water in my house waiting for hurricane to pass and water to drop. So I don't know the snow issues but just a question, why no sweeping 90s and take the carbon monoxide vent up just under the soffit. Doesn't carbon monoxide rise. That seems allot funner if there was Christmas lights up and warm eggnog with some baileys and maybe some Nat King Cole Xmas music playing. Way funner than dragging the house contents out so Corona variant #72 doesn't grow. Ok jokes aside is there a reason for low lying vents??? I watched a vid from a guy in Buffalo do the same as you and wondered the same.
This is why we heat with wood. We was without electricity for a month during our last ice storm. We cooked and heated our bath water on our wood stove. I felt like I was living in the 1800s
So I don't know what those wooden posts are next to your generator. My suggestion would be to get rid of those then you can take your skids to your blow yourself a path to the generator mostly blow around it blow a pretty big area around it and then you won't have to shovel so much in the cold.
This only have to happen one time to me before I fix this issue, and it never happens again. But then again, I think I would’ve already prepared being as though the storm was coming.
Things that annoy me about this...Why is the generator not in a shed with exhaust routed through a stack in the roof and hooked to an automatic switchover and the natural gaslines? And why would furnace vents be at ground level and not out a flu through the roof? That's just irresponsible design for the Buffalo area climate.
Glad the storm is over, just a thought can you make temporary pipe extensions that would push on for the winter months?it would save you from digging them out during a storm situation.Enjoy ridding along Happy New Year.
I know few people have a house Generator and they enclosed and build something round there Generator from bad weather. I guess it works good no problems over 10 years just saying
That happened because of the high efficiency furnace not venting out the main stack above the roof. But, the generator not running because of the snow is a problem. That's a lot of snow though.

Wouldn’t it be better to build a lean to in front of vents and a small structure to in close the generator so when you do have blizzards like this you’re protected! Just a thought?
the longer they are the more resistance which may shorten the life of the blower and other parts...that being said I will look into how far they can be extended. Happy New Years.

April 9, 2021, before going to bed, my vision went black for a quick moment, and then I saw in gold letters: Thus saith the Lord. About four hours later, April 10, during my sleep I heard: Prophet. Tell them I am coming soon. 3-5 later, at 1235 AM, our area had a small earthquake registering 3.1.

If you want to accept Jesus, admit you are a sinner (we all are), believe in Jesus and that He came in the flesh and that He died for you (well worth it), call out to Him to save you.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son so that whomsoever believes in Him may not perish but may have everlasting life.
It was quite a storm and tested everyone's systems. After year one when mine filled with snow I install a plywood board in front of the intake side. It has never filled with snow again. And a battery blanket plugged into a thermo cube. It now handles our Ontario snow storms, wind and low Temps.
Thank you
Take it easy out there
thank you
I'm getting it. The snow storms your having there are what we had back when I was a boy. Late 60's early 70's. And yes all went without any power so no heating or hot water. Having a fireplace and wood got us through.

Simpler is better sometimes great memories
Where I'm from in the mtns of West Virginia we always have a a well house with heat to keep from freezing and a generator house to keep snow off it and a garage with a 4wd chained up in it and a tractor if where lucky and a wood shed full of fire wood and kindlin and a smoke house for meats and a celler full of potatoes and canned vegetables and what not just for this reason although it's not bin no where that bad in years happy new years be safe out there it's definitely not easy godbless
God bless you I love the history great memories...good way to live.
Thank God for Generac, something every home should have.
agreed
I'm from the south and looking at your video I realized that it's still a couple of things I need to prepare myself I don't have a solar generator yet I have a gas one but having a problem with it have to get it worked on before hurricane season stay safe up there in the north
Lacey we can learn from each other that's why I post.
I am in Buffalo NY. It was 53 degrees here and 1/2 of the snow has already melted- crazy
Glad to hear that Paula...my cousin and his mother were lucky to have been rescued in that storm you had there..I'm in central NY...enjoy the warmth...for now...I'm sure it's not here to stay...
Sir thank you so much for taking this video in these conditions. I'm definitely subscribing
Thank you, and welcome aboard.
When possible, you can also use your leaf blower to get some of the snow moved out of tight spots. Yikes that is a ton of snow!! Hoping you guys are ok.
😆
Hope you will be ok you did so well to survive in those conditions! Take care x
Thanks Sandra very considerate of you I appreciate that. I'm fine and my heart did well. Happy New Years.
@@maraudermitchelli Thsnkyou Marauder great to hear from you.I hope you are warm now and the snow is soon gone..Happy new Year x
Thank you John we use them for temporary heat on our construction projects. Good suggestion. Happy New Years
You are always in my prayers, stay safe.
Thank you very kind of you. But there are so many others that are more deserving.
Snow shovels are a must. Snow blower also, if you have one. Good job guys 👍
I need one thank you
Coming from MINNESOTA that looks like so much fun. Glad you have all the tools too move it. Stay safe and good luck.
Fun...I'm moving to Minnesota. Happy New Years
Wow - that is crazy. We just got a standby generator, and I hadn’t thought about that. Always used a portable, or tractor powered PTO generator, and plowed to get them out and plugged in, but the standby one just sits tight and gets snowed in…. Thanks for posting!
Keep those vents clear. happy new years
Wow...I've seen snow but that is something else. Reminds me of mountain snow, where they only predict how many feet
I haven't heard that in a while so cool and I agree
Wow what a job at least you have your son helping you a very important job to get done here in Ontario Canada we don’t have any snow yet it’s all across the border be safe out there here from Ontario Canada I am about 1.30 hours from Niagara Falls❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
I've been to Ontario we love Canada. Happy New Years
I've seen some homes with those GENERAC generators placed on top of metal or concrete stand. About 3 or 4 feet off the ground. I guess it's a good idea, especially living in cities like Buffalo, NY, with the "lake effect snow events."
i really love your site ,very informative ,and wow huge snow
Thank you very much! Frank welcome to the channel I'm glad you like the content.
I had to hire someone to do mine because my doctor said your days of snow blowing are over 😢
I know thank you for the prayers. Happy New Years.
Well, I hope you and your family have a Happy New Year. Greetings from Wales UK. Best Wishes!
Petra we had a great Christmas, you have a Happy New Years God bless you.
Looks like you live in a pretty good lifestyle to me I don't think I would complain about my generator being covered up with snow.
Hi Kristen I didn’t complain, just a project that had to done during the storm. I’m very fortunate and we faired very well during the storm. Many did not it’s sad. Happy new year 🎆
A snow like that would absolutely cripple us in KY.. The state is not prepaired for that nor would anyone know what to do... Take care Marauder... 👍👍
All good Doc stay warm and Happy New Years
I'm glad we didn't get any of the snow, my son sold our torpedo heaters to his buddy, just before this apocalypse, even though I told him, 'I'm glad we have these heaters in case a snowfall hits'. What a doofus ..
I'm glad you didn't get this storm also...not fun.
I was about to say you should use that awesome skid loader with the blower to do that work but at the end of the video I think I saw some ornamental items buried under the snow in the yard. Take it easy, no snow is worth a cardiac event. Happy New Year Marauder!
I'm going to clear that stuff out of the way so the big machine can get us close. Thank you and you're right.
You all stay safe and may God bless you all.
Thank you Simon we had a good plan. Happy New Years
I have worked on a lot of remote communications sites in Alaska and where snow is a potential problem for the generator it is elevated. Even lifting this generator on a 2-3 foot stand would help. Also it wasn’t uncommon to have snorkel vents coming out of the top of the enclosure.
Chris I think that is the most realistic solution. Thank you Happy New Years.
@@maraudermitchelli I’m glad I could help. May you and your family and friends also have a Happy New Year
So well prepared except for Bad shovels.
Ugh...I think you're right. I'm buying another aluminum scoop shovel that's what my son went back for. Happy New Years
With a sudden bomb blizzard, perhaps consideration should be given to the generator; a temporary wooden box structure with two pipes, one for fresh air intake and the other a tightly clamped exhaust pipe. Both pipes well above anticipated snow height with a U bend on top to prevent snow depositing inside each pipe. Maybe temporarily extending those two pvc outlets too?
I will discuss this in a debriefing video.
Life is largely about the decisions we make, or choose not to make.
Hope you get some melting this week. Greetings and happy new year from Albany ny
Thank you Ed the big thaw has hit. Happy New Years.
I agree Brian, I will discuss this in a debriefing video
An issue I have found with portable gas generators is carburetor icing. A friend showed me the solution, place a tarp over the generator or install it inside a open tent. The heat made will stop the icing.
Go south young man, go south!!
Awesome just awesome lol Happy New Years
This was definitely educational. I'm not sure what you could do to possibly alleviate this problem in the future. One thing is for sure, I get the feeling you're smart enough to figure it out. ✌️🙏👍 Y'all stay safe.
You're more confident than I, but I will try. First time in 20 years I've had to shovel the vents. Happy New Years.
@@maraudermitchelli SAME to you. You can do it!
@@maraudermitchelli An idea just popped in my head & I was wondering if the exhaust valves could be moved higher up on the structure. If needed, maybe landscaping could be used to disguise the changes.
@@maraudermitchelli A few dollars and a few minutes to make some snorkel extensions for your vents.
Pretty nice storm not nice without heat but you handled it just fine
Thank you Rocco, I hope you enjoyed the video. I hope there's many months before we get snow again.
Need to put some extension pipes on the intake and exhaust for heat. Don't glue then so you can take them off after winter. Add a "T" too, so water vapor can escape.
Thank you Jerry I have to work on this. Happy New Years.
Wide shovels are for pushing snow. They are not for digging. Use a narrow snow shovel to save your back and arms
Most don't know as always over working themselves with wrong equipment. Quality strong shovels get it done.
Scoop shovel next purchase happy new years
You need ro put a protective structure around that generator
Glad to see you got everything up and running. Too bad you couldn't build a small covering structure over the Generator. Gotta get your son out there more often. That's a young man's job!!!! Be safe.
My son shoveled twice a day for three days and did a great job. In 20 years I've never had to shovel these vents. Happy New Years. Oh I'm working on a fix for the vents
@@maraudermitchelli If it was me those pipes would be extended up the wall at least another 4 feet. :)
Thank God for snowblowers and generators.
lol yes
Love your preparedness! Considering the direction of most storms through your area (blowing from west to east, would moving your generator to the opposite side of the house help eliminate this in the future? Or perhaps building a barrier, like a wood privacy fence to prevent the drift from reaching the generator?? I can't see the other side of the house, but I suspect it doesn't have as much blown snow, just asking...
Yep or some small trees surrounding the place.
don't forget the dryer vent 😃
Our dryer vent is on the second floor. Thank you Happy New Years
Could you build a plywood box to cover the furnace and hot water vents? 5" high x 3" wide x 1" deep should do it, place some stones on the top- to keep it from blowing away
Bill I'll do a debriefing video and explain why not...but yours is a good question. thank you
Tremendous effort going on here!!
Thank you sir. Happy New Years
Might be a good idea to put extension on those vent pipes for you heat, and hot water before a storm comes the next time, the generator is another story however....
I'm not sure the blower motor can push that distance. I am researching. Happy New Years.
I'll explain in a recap video soon. Your points are excellent thank you
Looked like fun! Lol. That’s a lot of snow to move
Fun...fun...it was a challenge and was nice working with my son. I was tense the units would not start but they did. Happy new year.
@@maraudermitchelli Happy New Year!
This is why we heat with wood. We was without electricity for a month during our last ice storm. We cooked and heated our bath water on our wood stove. I felt like I was living in the 1800s
Shane that's a good solutions and super cool. I think sometimes less is more. Happy New Years
People, don't wait until storm is over. Clean and shovel pathways and generators throughout the storm, every hour or before it gets boot top high.
Some people can't do that🤦
Agreed I will be doing the same, and I now one could get through the snow to help empty house for people out of town. Happy New Years.
Carole great suggestion...in 20 years this is the first time I've had to shovel the vents. I'll be prepared for next year. Happy New Years.
happy new years 2023. can you put those air pipes up alot higher for next year?
I'm not sure the furnace blowers can handle another elbow and extending the pipe. Happy New Years.
So I don't know what those wooden posts are next to your generator. My suggestion would be to get rid of those then you can take your skids to your blow yourself a path to the generator mostly blow around it blow a pretty big area around it and then you won't have to shovel so much in the cold.
Agreed my son had the same Idea. We'll be prepared next year...good eye. Happy New years
I would have extended the vents up 6' to clear any snow issues.
This only have to happen one time to me before I fix this issue, and it never happens again. But then again, I think I would’ve already prepared being as though the storm was coming.
Good for year I like that attitude, btw this was the first time.
Thank you great suggestion...my friend did that and they clogged. Happy New Years.
Vents are way to low & should have elbows to stop them filling full of snow. Crazy storm.
I'm not sure the furnace blowers can handle another elbow and extending the pipe. Happy New Years.
I know few people have a house Generator and they enclosed and build something round there Generator from bad weather. I guess it works good no problems over 10 years just saying
Maybe a walk behind snowblower for around the tight areas?
Oh boy I was going to get one for my wife's hot tub and ran out of time...agreed. Happy New Years
That happened because of the high efficiency furnace not venting out the main stack above the roof. But, the generator not running because of the snow is a problem. That's a lot of snow though.
Hi Bryan there is no main stack out my roof, all the heating units are high efficiency
Suggest having those vents higher off the ground so they don’t get covered so easily with snowfall.
I will post a blizzard debriefing video on this topic soon thank you good comment.
Hello, and Happy New year! I just found your TH-cam channel and I love it. Your videos are so relaxing. Love watching you help your neighbors. By the way I did subscribe 😁👍Also I love that you don't play music or speed up the content. I enjoy listening to the equipment and hearing you speak. 😁
Thank you Michael glad to have you with the channel. I'm honored and lucky to have great subscribers
Extend your exhaust to half way up and then use a curb piping to target the ground
So many options thank you that's a good idea. Be safe
Stay safe and well
Thank you
Wouldn’t it be better to build a lean to in front of vents and a small structure to in close the generator so when you do have blizzards like this you’re protected! Just a thought?
I will discuss this in a debriefing video...maybe
Yes when expecting snow storms / blizzards cover these well in advance.
They really shouldn't be covered. I will discuss this in a debriefing video
Really needed a tall snow fence right there wonder if that would help?
Maybe but the wind change directions really don't want one by my house. To cover the house it would surrounded by a snow fence. Happy New Years
Winter gear up top. Soaked cotton jeans below.
If you know, you know!!!
Check out Heattrak mats. Not sure if this can work for your application. This would be kind of a band aid solution imo
I will Jay thank you
Yes thank you
thank you
This is where a wood stove is good
I have fireplace and no wood stove...I wish I had one thank you.
silly question but why not extend those up to like 8 feet even if you make temporary PVC "z" connections for winter.
the longer they are the more resistance which may shorten the life of the blower and other parts...that being said I will look into how far they can be extended. Happy New Years.
For those who laughed at Texas. See it happens in the North too. The difference is we are zero prepared.
The great state of Texas. We felt the storm across the country it really heart supplies. Stay safe Texas Happy New Years
I'm pretty sure your heater vents need to have another elbow on them to point them downward and most likely also the same for your tankless hot wa
ter heater
Worried about resistance and condensation drainage. Researching happy new year
