Malcolm had the most iconic sound ever made especially for a rhythm guitarist who don't get much attention. His right hand was the most amazing thing I've seen ever. Without him I wouldn't have started my band in Australia. R.I.P Malcolm ⚡

Glad to see that Stevie is playing Malcolm's gear. It would be a shame to have Mal's gear put away in storage or a museum....it needs to be used and played; glad Angus is doing that

Malcolms Gretsch looks like a slim Acoustic Guitar with nothing but power. Always loved the look. Iconic Guitar played by a Great.

It makes me laugh when I go to parties and some 40 year old woman says “ I saw AC/DC start out in Sydney night clubs”. My response is usually “ you weren’t even sperm in the early 1970s. Hell, I was just in my early teens when acca dacca started out. Im 60 in April.

I saw Stevie’s band (Starfighters) open for AC/DC at the Hammersmith Odeon - they were a great band and I still have their album on vinyl from back then. I remember Stevie looked identical to Malcolm on stage - it was no secret that he was related - but he had the same hair, same stance on stage, same guitar!
Stevie adored his Uncle Mal and vice versa.
Remember reading , when Stevie stood in for Malcolm back in the 80’s nobody could tell that it wasn’t Malcolm on stage

my freind use to mke me feel like im doing wrong because my guitar was missing 2 toggles & once on another guitar tone was bypassed as well as neck pickup, & it was "frowned upon" ....... If what comes out of the amp sounds good,doesnt matter what the guitar looks like,as proven by Eddie himself.

The white Arrowhead guitar was a Gretsch. It was Mal's back up in 78/79. Check out ACDC Rock goes to College filmed in 1978. JD did the ridiculous(IMO)mods to it and put on their truss rod cover but its a Gretsch not a JayDee. Irrespective of what the hired tour roadies tell you as Gospel.
Guess it could be a Gretsch, Stevie told me it was a JayDee. Bison (RIP) would probably have been the only guy who knew the truth.
@@guitartech1 Hey Greg! Thanks for commenting. Bison would have known for sure. As would Angus no doubt! I have researched this guitar extensively and I'm 100% certain its a Gretsch firebird with the finish removed. Jaydee did make 3 copies for Malcolm in 1980, which look nothing like that particular guitar purported to be a Jaydee. Even on their(Jaydee) website they speak about the 3 they made for the great man, but nowhere do they mention the Arrow guitar. I am certain that Jaydee did carry out the mods to the bridge setup and the filling of the toggle switch holes etc ,as you can see today on the guitar. The giveaway they were commissioned to do it was the addition of their Truss rod cover. They also must have done some work to Mal's original beast at the same time, as this was when the Quan tailpiece was changed to the Schaller 455 wraparound. Jaydee used these tailpieces when building their own guitars so it stands to reason the swapped them over then.
I watched your vid when it dropped on restringing guitars and have adopted that way you string your guitars. Works great for my Gretsch's Thankyou. I may have come across as a bit rude in part of my original comment I do apologize Greg.

My takeaway from what he was saying is that he’s never that far away so wireless doesn’t make sense for him like it does for Angus. Do you happen to know THE answer? Just asking.

@@allenmitchell09 that's what I got as well. "He doesn't need wireless because he doesn't move". Given that everything is as simple as can be that's a pretty solid reason
Short answer “Because Malcolm used a cable”. But, really a cable sounds better than a wireless, unless the artist uses the compander circuit as part of their sound (Angus did this with the Schaffer/Vega).

@@akiukonmaanaho1025 12 to 56 is awesome to play on, I've been using them on a Gretsch for years. Solves tuning problems of Bigsby trem and tone, tone, tone! Great for lead too, just takes a but of work to develop good vibrato and bends is all. I could never go back to lighter strings.

Of course he did
Not very often, but yeah. As Angus once put it, "He never goes up the dusty end of the fretboard!" Listen to "Soul Stripper"... Mal and Angus did "call and response" solos, each only playing a bar or two at a time. If you listen closely, you can tell the difference in tone between the two as they go back and forth. It always amazed me how they could make a Gretsch and a Gibson sound nearly identical, so much that most people think it's Angus playing the whole solo.

don't forget, 'regular' '50s/60s string sets had a wound 3rd, all electric guitars were the same (basically acoustic string gauges). it was only when guys wanted to play solos that they used something like a banjo string for the top E then moved the other strings across.

No, Mal just figured out that he got better rhythm tone from the bridge pickup, so he had no need for a neck or middle pickup. He eventually decided to get rid of the tone control and pickup switch to simplify the wiring (fewer parts, fewer problems), so he figured he might as well just get rid of the other pickups since he wasn't ever going to use them.

That was the norm back when those guitars were made. Light gauge strings weren't exactly commonplace until the later '60s and early '70s
why he removed pickup? and if so why not blank it or maybe order a new one with just one pick up :)
That’s what gives the guitar it’s tone , why change it if it works !
First he added a Gibson humbucker in the middle, then he decided he didn't like the tone from that or the original neck pickup, so since he was only using the bridge pickup, he removed them and DID cover the holes with a plastic cover. When the red "finish" coating chipped (it's not paint, it's actually plastic), he chiseled off the rest and put the plastic cover back over the pickup holes for a year or two. Around '78 he decided he didn't like the cover, so he took it off but then had feedback issues, so he stuffed the holes with socks. By the Highway to Hell era, he had figured out how to control the feedback without the cover and without stuffing it with old socks (lol) and just left the holes open... because AC/DC isn't about looks, it's about sound, so the guitar stayed that way and all of his backups were made to be nearly identical copies... and that's why the MY signature model from Gretsch has identical routing and holes drilled exactly like Mal's #1.

One of any fretted instrument player badly kept secrets, to have a "boy" what to babysit his expensive toys while we're either getting liquidated, being toasted like day old french bread, having our array sorted out. ( That's getting a tongue lashing, or straight up sex people). Or being chauffeured around and doing all above at once. After all we do hit the stage in 45mins.
Most artists don't get that far. We are generally content to play and make a modest living on weekends and holidays. This includes Chancel Musicians as well. Hell we do good to have someone to take pity on us and help

Wits funny that the most successful bands refuse to talk to you in person. They always send their roadies out.
Refuse is a bit of a strong word, alot of work goes into promoting and putting on these shows, sometimes time constraints mean the roadie has to do it, and in most cases the roadie knows more about the gear anyway.
@@efa666 Plus I don't think Angus knows much about guitars. According to Dweezil Zappa Angus doesn't even know how to tune a guitar.
Usually we do the rig rundowns because at this level the band arrives late to the venue and basically just does the show and then flies off to the next city. We do these videos in the afternoon just before or after our roadie jam/sound check for the audio guys.
@@AndreaAustoni I’d say that was false. Angus knows a lot more about guitar than most people think. He’s an amazing traditional blues player.
@@guitartech1 Not to mention Angus has a killer vibrato - one of the best in the history of Rock. He doesn't get the accolades from the cork-sniffing, toffee-nosed crowd, but Angus and Malcolm are loved by all of us AC/DC fans and Regular Joe guitar players.
