- Felt the urge to rant a bit about C-RPGS and rank 'em up. Just using someone else's tier list maker. If anybody wants a 'should you play in 2023 tier list' that would be a different matter. This is games ranked for when they came out.

The guys that made Tyranny are the same guys that made Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, which are the same guys that made Vampire and Arcanum, which was made by some of the same guys that made Fallout 1.
Disco Elysium blew my mind. You need to play it. It is one of my favorite game ever, pound for pound. I laughed, I cried, I jubilated, it's just perfect. Simple but perfect.
Started making a video about this afternoon. Will take a while to finish the game though this is a 'take your time game' from the feel of it.

Good list, and very similar to mine but you are (kinda) wrong about KOTOR 2. Its a deconstruction of Star Wars and thats why it works in my opinion. KOTOR 1 is a feel good heros journey fantasy and KOTOR 2 takes that and completely subverts it. In my opinion Avellone took video game storytelling and made it his bitch. I'd even go as far to say that KOTOR 2 trumps Torment in the writing department. I just refuse to believe someone can put KOTOR 2 on the same tier as Fallout 4 xD
Also Avellone never worked for BioWare, Drew Karpyshyn wrote KOTOR 1.
As for Tyranny I personally really liked it and its an easy A list for me. It has a weak act 3 otherwise it would have been an S tier for me.
Also you seem to be missing Neverwinter Nights II with Mask of The Betrayer? Avellone wrote the expansion and its kinda phenomenal.
Btw I also recommend Torment: Tides of Numenera... made by InXile people it has one of the most interesting worlds in a video game and the writing is pretty good.
Oh, I am totally open to being wrong about KOTOR 2 - I just really struggle to adjust my expectations. I also agree, I didn't mean to say that he wrote KOTOR 1 just that he wrote KOTOR 2 (I think it was the only game he's ever been design lead on??) the guy is clearly amazingly creative - the game just hasn't clicked with me.
@@oldmanbanjo He was also lead designer on cancelled Fallout 3 aka Van Buren as well as Planescape Torment. He was also lead designer on Neverwinter Nights II: Mask of The Betrayer expansion which is a game unto itself.
We all have different tastes but you should rly try again Tyranny bcs is most reactive unique game ever made, and yes the game isnt polished very well but there isnt anything like it in all crpg games ever.
Dude this was good video. Sure you have some interesting choices that I'm sure will piss off a few people. I'm old enough to have played every single game in this list, when they came out. You're pretty on point to the sentiment when they came out. I think you have a bias for Vampire the Masquerade, but all is fair in love and war brother. I would put it on S, don't get me wrong, but not above Kotor, or even Kotor 2. Like Kotor 2 on C is wild to me. Kotor 2 has incredible dialogue and the issue in that game IS darkness and the cost of being righteous. I think a desire for a happy Star Wars is part of what has messed up the universe after Disney picked it up. Reality has darkness and to represent a believable Star Wars universe, you must show the the darkness. I mean, Palpatine was pure evil.

Yea dos2 in the same tier kinda just kills the video for me lol, to each their own but jeez. You can't put fallout 4 and dos2 in the same category to begin with imo. Mechanically it's the strongest rpg/crpg here.

I just think he doesn’t like comedic serious stories aka (dark humor) look at where wasteland three is and every Larian game
For example in wasteland 3 the guy dressed up as Santa who has a bunch of slaves dressed up as elves it’s funny but they still take it very seriously

Ya, just what his personal tastes are, and hes consistent with what he likes / doesn't like. I personally like the DS style and BG3 is exactly the sort of game i love, literally beat for beat made for me. But happily acknowledge thats not the same for everyone.
shadowrun franchise is pretty good, and the best part is they have mods with whole new adventures
Idk about the start with Tyranny and KOTR 2. Some of the best writing and story. Star wars is not just one thing...also divinity original sin 2? thats a take. Cannot disagree more. I see a pattern with saying things are boring. BG3 opinion is also wild. I think I just dont have the same tastes as you (and it seems a lot of people dont considering most opinions I hear on these games). However, you have convinced me to play Icewind Dale so I take that as a win!
The 1000s of Mods made for Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 make the game top tier. Also Mask of the Betrayer DLC for NWN 2 is one of the best campaigns ever.
Fallout four and divinity original sin two on the same level hell no I couldn’t even finish fallout four because how pissed off that game made me

I was skipping this video because putting BG3 in the title seemed as a red flag to me... should've listened. The tier list seems like there's no thought put behind it and some of them were like "I didn't play enough"

For me:
S: Fallout 2
A: Fallout, BG3, Disco elysium, U5, Age of decadence
B: Planescape torment, The dark heart of Uukrul, UW/UW2, ToEE, Da:O, Pathfinder KM/WotR
C: Rest of the ultima series, M&M as a whole, Eye of the beholder games, Kotor, BG1, FoNV, PoE, Shadowrun trilogy, Wasteland 3,Arcanum
D: Fo3, Wasteland 2, NwN/NwN2, Kotor 2, TES series,VTMB (I don't use mods as standard and VTMB is unplayable without the RP)
E: Fallout 4/76, Encased
F: Torment tides of numenera, Tyranny
Vampire bloodlines may be the best game of all time for sure, i love this game so fucking much. I really want to see the sequel they have been promissing.
Arcanum is the best of the best, it is right behind BG3 and Fallout 1&2,. one must play through the whole game and see it' brilliance. It's world is WAY more immersive and intricate then any other gameworld, including Troika's own VtMB and Temple of Elemental evil which are behind Arcanum.
Tyranny D ? DOS2/Neverwinter Night C ? This poor man has lost his mind. Like an Englishman in gastronomy, this man has no taste.
I mean you dont really give an in depth explanation on why you give such universally acclaimed titles low tier ratings. But enjoy the views im sure it was why you made this video.

I disagree with classifying many of these as CPRGs. CRPG, as I understand it, is a genre appellation rather than a technical descriptor (i.e., being an RPG on PC is insufficient to be classified as a CRPG). VtMB is an immersive sim, and Fallouts 3 and up are certainly RPGs, but I don't know that a narrower label exists for them aside from maybe Western RPG or WRPG. I always thought CRPGs were isometric games like Baldur's Gate, DA:O, Neverwinter Nights, Tyranny, etc.

Lol'd at seeing Fallout 4 near anything remotely well written, including putting BG3 nearby. Terrible take, there's nothing about Fallout 4 that's even remotely close to immersion, ESPECIALLY the first 30 minutes in the game when we witness firsthand a nuclear apocalypse and nobody reacts to it, panics, screams, the only comment we get is "can't this elevator go faster?" when witnessing a fucking nuclear blast just like a mile away. For me this is a tier below F.
Dude, I got flack for putting it at C. F4 has got to me the most controversial game opinion wise in the history of gaming. IF I was just doing a Fallout tierlist it would be dead last.
Inxile is developer of torment: tides of numenera, not obsidian. So if you don’t like tyranny, but really into wasteland and Planescape: torment, you should probably try it. It’s not as cool as Planescape though. It’s more like disco Elysium with a bit weaker writing, weird world and unnecessary combat.

I guess I need to go play some Icewind Dale. I remember it being fine, and one of the few games I actually finished, but better than DA:O? F2?? PS:T??? The nerve!
BG3. Low S tier. Still in act one. So far the game lacks that irrestible force that makes you sit on the main plot till 5 AM, but it has SO MUCH going for it. So much good content, the quests, the music, visuals, the otherworldly sandbox-ability. If you can think it, somebody thought it before you and implementetd it as an option in the game. In 22 days I have 149 hours clocked in this game and I still haven't seen half of it. And it ain't no smuggler caches either.
I've actually paused my review of BG3 atm. I'm encountering too many bugs and its affecting my perception of the game. I'm going to replace my SSD drive as I suspect it may be the cause.
For me BG3 is one of my top games. Lots of bugs in act 3 however, and did affect my opinion. However, ACT 1 and ACT 2 were phenomenal. ACT 1 is the epitome of DND with exploration and decisions. ACT 2 really sends u in. ACT 3 is a great finale, however, with bugs that they are fixing its on the weaker side.
For me this is almost a perfect tier list, great job imho.

Luckly it's only your opinion, so I don't feel the urge to waste time and argue op many takes. Let's just leave it at your taste opinion.
Good list. A few that I disagree with and some that I do agree. Starting with agreements, the worst thing a game can be is boring, and I did feel that playing Tyranny. The game has some really good concepts, and with a bit of polishing, it could have been a good game, but the story really did not suck me in. New Vegas and KOTOR are still some of my favorite games. The villain run in KOTOR is the best evil play through I have ever done, and no other game has come close to copying that. Most villain runs are just be a prick to everyone you meet. But in KOTOR, if you play with a high charisma (persuasion and intimidation) you are a manipulative b@stard and you just convince people to follow you and do just horrendous acts (RIP Mission).
A couple disagreements, Fallout 4 should be D tier. The only redeeming quality is ease of modding. Divinity Original Sin 2 should be A tier. The story is enjoyable, and the combat in that game is fantastic. I love how you can interact with the environment during combat to effect your enemies. The interaction between party members is fun too, they are not all friends. Planescape Torment is easily S+ tier once you finish it. The story and how it unfolds is fun to discover. The supporting characters are unique. There is a bit of moon logic in solving some of the puzzles that was common with a lot of games at that time (Kings Quest, Monkey Island, Discworld), but it makes since in the world you are playing in. Planescape Torment is easily my favorite cRPG.
I am surprised the list included fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas, as they are not cRPGs, but did not include Solasta (OGL 5e rules), Temple of Elemental Evil (Trokia), Pool of Radiance (first 3e D&D computer game), Neverwinter Nights 2, Kingmaker, or Wraith of the Righteous. List feels a bit incomplete.
Overall good video. I still have my physical copy of Icewind Dale 2 and play it from time to time. I would rank it just above Icewind Dale, as it was an improvement on the game.
I agree with you about the list, I'll make my own tier list one day with more games and less...non-crpgs. man I'd totally forgotten about ToEE!! that game was schweet. I'm going to do eventually do a 'Troika' retrospective video when I finally get around to it. I might have also ranked IWD2 above 1 - but I can't remember it well enough - was so long ago. DD2 is just a game I never clicked with - heck half the audience of this channel is people who hate me for not liking the Divinity series - but it is what it is.
you scared me for a moment there placing kotor above bloodlines, it's definetly S+ but bloodlines is legendary
Fallout 1 & 2 is S+.
If you can past the old Isometric clank then you will realise it is up their with vampire masquerade.
Mind I suggest new players play (Fallout new Vegas) as I can understand the lock out of the classic fallout games as they are not forgiving to player that don't know what they are doing.
Pretty sure I still have the Icewind Dale II discs. I stopped playing it early on because I hate mazes.
Yeah, I still have a strong traumatic memory of that maze - but I don't think it was THAT early on?

Icewind dale S-tier? It was trash compared to BG 1 & 2. Doesn't deserve higher than low b-tier. Still a decent game if you play it with the right mindset.
The original Witcher is C-tier.
BG III doesn't deserve lower than A-tier.

Not to beat a dead horse, instead I’ll mutilate it. Yea KOTOR 2 is better than 1 imo in many if not most ways. Kreia is singularly my favorite Star Wars character hands down. I’ve read the expanded universe books, many. And if you do you’ll find a lot of “gritty” darker Star Wars. Luke and Han’s family go through some SHIT. And I still think Kreia is the fucking best. Give it a chance and go all the way through. Talk to her as much as you can.

Best music, Virgil is the best companion i love how he changes his personality depending on you being evil or good, he adapts to you. Unique setting and i love the story how it tells you that are the chosen one at the begining, but you really aren´t. The dialogue options are fantastic too.

What? Where did I say that? I said I'm in Act 3 of BG3 - which is much father than most people. That puts me in the top 5% of BG3 players in progression. You've only 'played' a game i.e., completed it when you're done with the playthrough - I'm not. I tend to not judge RPGs until I know the full story line - as story is the most important bit to me

Yes, but I think 3rd act is B, maybe A when I'm done. But I'm going to replay a bit, I think my save file is corrupt. Everytime I play the game gets buggier and buggier and I can't figure out why.

My man. If you actually sink your teeth into Disco Elysium: Final Cut (The fully voice acted version), and complete it, you will absolutely place it into the S-plus category. I’ve never encountered a game that addresses the human condition in such a way. Books, yes. Video games, Disco is the first. It’s an absolute GOAT. So really. I don’t know you personally, but just as one human being to another, play and complete Disco Elysium (again, Final Cut). So yeah. Get on it. Lol. Seriously tho.
Yeah, I actually started playing the voice acted version this afternoon. As a voice actor myself it's insanely good. Like, Supergiant Games studios level of talent. I'm gonna do a full video on it in the next few weeks.

@oldmanbanjo bg3 is one of the best games of all time. That is my opinion after 250 hrs in the game and 8 playthroughs. You're just blinded by nostalgia and not giving it a fair shake. I'm an old school gamer that was playing the OG CRPGs such as eye of the beholder and world of Xeen. Both S tier Crpgs that were omited from your list. Im guessing you are 32 or so and just really foundly remember early 2000s games. Well I fondly remember early 90s Crpgs. It's your list do what you want but BG3 is not a D/C tier game. It's S tier on my list.
