      Pick up sticks are very simple to ease into, and can radically change your weaving. Have fun exploring!

    My apologies friends, I thought that TH-cam did auto captioning for hearing impaired, however they do not (I thought they used to?) I would have to type the whole thing out myself. I will do that if needed, let me know if it's necessary.

    Hi. I am a newbie to weaving. Its nearly a year since I purchased a loom. But I have a tip for you. I don't have any pickup sticks at all so I use a knitting needle to pick the threads and wooden ruler at the back. Hope this tip helps.

  • @bon47ful
    @bon47ful 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thank you for this. ❤️ Also: I think I am beginning to understand something... I think I have been weaving with the warp tension too taut. I notice that when you beat the heddle in this sample that your warp is much looser with lots more give to the fabric. I have wondered why I need to use a comb as a supplementary beater to close the gap between my weft picks. Warp tension may be the answer! Thank you!

    FYI I had firm cardboard boxes so making pickup sticks. I use the stick that came with my vintage loom to measure width.

    I have a 10" ashford rigid heddle loom how many warp threads do I need for a hand towel ? Oh I'm semi new to weaving . I've done two projects but I am new

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  ปีที่แล้ว

      You would generally need a wider width to weave towels. You could either do really skinny towels or weave two skinny panels and stitch them together to make one towel. Either way, you would warp the full width of your loom.

    Can we have warp floats aswell to make the waffle weave stand out more? If so how do we do this please? Thankyou 😊

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  ปีที่แล้ว

      This tutorial combines warp and weft floats in the one piece. They look different because the yarns are different colours and sizes.

    Hi Kelly, I hope you can help. I want to do this pattern using a Cotton Slub (King Cole Opium) yarn for both warp and weft. But the yarn is very elastic. Is it possible? I I can't find the answer to this anywhere online.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only problem with an elastic yarn is that the waffle pattern already has quite a bit of draw in itself, so you would have to allow extra for that. You may also need to be careful with warp tension to avoid the weaving contracting a lot off the loom.

    • @obscurika7934
      @obscurika7934 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KellyCasanova Thank you Kelly, I think my best option is a complete rethink on how best to use this beautiful slub cotton. In the meantime, I am keen to try your waffle weave so will use a different yarn (I have some lovely soft alpaca (alpaca plus silk for the warp) which will work well for the soft shawl I want to make for those cold winter months :)

    Do you have a video on how to dress the loom for the waffle weave . I'm a beginner so I'm doing a weave along with Chris Acton . And the waffle weave is the project.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be much better if you learned to warp your loom first, before participating in a weave along. If you need a beginner's rigid heddle class, I have one here - kelly-casanova-weaving-lessons.teachable.com/p/beginner-rigid-heddle/?preview=logged_out

      @@KellyCasanova I have already done a weave along and I have dressed my loom for a straight weave befor i meant im a beginner to this particular weave i have only done 4 projects ever . I've done the log cabin weave and made two towels . I just need to know how the warping is done for a waffle weave . I've watched a bunch of videos but they never start with the warping

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willich123 Usually for waffle weave, you warp for plain weave and do the pick up afterwards - that is, if you're weaving it using pick up sticks.

  • @janesflanagan
    @janesflanagan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hi there, I’d like to suggest that you could change the number of warp threads so that the pattern is symmetrical and to avoid the weft floats reaching the selvedge on the left hand side. I’ve found these end weft floats can pull in the weaving when removed from the loom, and in a project like a scarf this could spoil the end result.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I absolutely agree. When I'm sampling, I'm pretty lazy about pattern repeats, but for a finished piece I would be paying particular attention to number of repeats and space at edges.

    • @valrog6924
      @valrog6924 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the number of warp threads should be divisible by 4, then +2 for the last "up", right? I already learned they should be even, but didn't think past that thought. I think this would be lovely for a baby blanket, my first handwoven blanket, for a baby due in late March. I do want the selvedges to be the same.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that sounds good, but for a blanket I would be wanting a border, so I wouldn't start the pickup on the first 2 like I have for this sample.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and further to that, I would recommend a small sample before warping the blanket, just to make sure the numbers are right and it looks balanced 😊

    • @valrog6924
      @valrog6924 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kelly Casanova I did a small sample and after wash n dry, have decided this weave with the floats is a bad idea for a newborn. I think I’ll keep it simple. Can’t wait for my loom and yarn to arrive!
