Mercedes-Benz looks to be working on a second facelift for its GLE-Class midsize SUV, this time larger than the previous one.
A GLE-Class prototype with a fresh front-end design covered beneath camouflage gear has been observed testing, proving that work on the most recent iteration is ongoing.
The interior has also been hidden, with a new steering wheel design and a larger infotainment screen.
The current GLE-Class debuted in 2020 and received its first facelift for the 2024 model year. This second update is planned to debut in 2026, therefore it will most likely be available for the 2027 model year.
Mercedes generally does not upgrade its vehicles more than once in a product cycle, but a second update would help keep the GLE-Class fresher for longer, as Mercedes is likely to keep some of its petrol vehicles on sale for longer than expected. The latest S-Class is also slated to have a longer production cycle.
The explanation is lower-than-expected demand for electric automobiles. Mercedes intends to go entirely electric by 2030, but the carmaker announced in February that it will continue to offer vehicles with gas engines after that date.
It's unclear what Mercedes has planned for its mechanical components, but the carmaker has stated that the GLE 53 from AMG will get a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 2026 model year, replacing the present mild hybrid configuration. The new powertrain will combine a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with an electric motor, producing a total of 536 horsepower.
The V-8 could possibly be phased out. The redesigned 2025 G-Class replaces its V-8 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6, however the AMG G 63 model retains its V-8 for the time being.
Some new technological features are anticipated to be introduced. One of these is the Offroad Cockpit, which was revealed for the 2025 G-Class. It provides an overview of critical off-road driving information on both the gauge cluster and the infotainment screen. This includes data such as vehicle position, altitude, steering angle, tire pressure, temperature readings, and a compass. It also has a transparent hood that uses a surround-view camera system to provide a glimpse of what's beneath the engine compartment, which is beneficial for both off-roading and traversing rough pavement.
