Plants vs. Zombies Any% TOOL ASSISTED SPEEDRUN!!!!!

- After 5 months of work, I finally got a full recording of the Plants vs. Zombies Any% TAS. This was a fairly long and complex project, with so many variables needing to be controlled for the run to be consistent and successful. While this run is by no means perfect, it hopefully can be a decent showcase of just how optimized this game can get!

Finally, I always wanted to see a TAS of this game! Ymblcza's runs opened my eyes to see a PvZ in a whole different light with how he manipulates stuff. Strategically using lawn mowers and Chompers really stood out to me.
Hilarious watching the -5's and also the zomboss battle, seeing you do the puzzles and minigames would be pretty cool
wr
Dude i have been wanting a pvz tas for ages, i love you
8:37 Just looking at this lawn I never would have believed that this is optimal gameplay.
You may not like it, but this is what peak gameplay looks like
@@bobbyshen7826 Well, it's optimal assuming the right RNG. Under normal circumstances, this kind of strategy would be a really bad idea.
“One of your peashooters died! Try planting them further to the left!”
The TAS: HA HA HA- No.
the rng manipulation there is really impressive
tbh u find it pretty easy and unimpressive once u know how to tas, its just a cheat
Very nice. My family and I love these games. Hopefully at some point you can TAS PVZ2's "Big Wave Beach." Would love to see that zone get wrecked by a TAS.
I beat it with no money spent, but ugh that place was a PAIN!
That won't never happen probably
I've never seen PvZ gameplay this cursed. Liked.
WOW the luck manipulation required for this run must've been an insane feat! Bomb after bomb after bomb in the roulette levels and even gem after gem in 3-4 was crazy to see the feat is even possible. Very entertaining TAS, especially with some of these wacky setups that are somehow considered optimal (favorite was probably a star fruit in 5-1)! I got a couple questions:
What framerate was this played at?
1:37:13 how did two blovers turn into a chili pepper in your inventory? I saw something similar happen in 5-5 too.
How do you break so many zombie spawns (i.e., regarding rakes, bungee zombie targeting, Zomboss spawns?)
That slot switchin is possible via PVZ Tools, but idk if he did it while usin the tas, I thin that also how the conveyor belts are done
As it techically possible to only get one plant in conveyorbelt and these spawns, only very unlikely
Amazing run! Can't believe TASing of PvZ is possible now. What tools did you use and will you do the side missions as well?
Technically, TASing the ds version was always possible. There are multiple ds emulators out there, and most of them are compatible with TASing.
@@ianjohnson218 I was talking about the PC version ;) TASing PC games is barely possible and limited to only a few titles, hence my surprise that PvZ is now one of therm.
Not sure how popular the DS version is, but its gameplay is quite different from the PC version, so I'm happy that a PC version TAS is a possibility now :)
@@pseudonym3690 I used the pvz python module(developed by the chinese community) to directly read and edit game memory to get ideal luck. I made a github page that I'll put in the description if you want to take a look.
@@aaronthewinner1818so strictly speaking, it's not a TAS of the original game, am i right? That perfect luck may or may not be possible in the original game, such as the multiple zombies spawning in a single spot. What actions advance the rng in the original game? Would such kind of luck truly be possible?
I appreciate you using a mod to remove the fog for us :)

59:06 - HUH?
1:00:20 - HUH?
1:16:27 - Huh? No fog?
this speedrun is fake
@@love_is_Iove - Yeah, tell that to a TASer.
59:06 Some of RNG manipulation Aaron shows include changing the position of the zombies/rakes/seed slots midgame. Sometimes the game doesn't render the changed things right, but, technically, this is more of "there was a chance for a rake to spawn there and not there, so let it be so"
1:00:20 What's wrong here?
1:16:27 I think he disabled it so we, the viewers, can see the things he places under the fog more clearly :)
@@dimakul2765 - I see... 🤔
1:00:20 Chompers can eat Zombonis (for some reason). I’m pretty sure the only zombies actually immune to them are Gargantuars
getting max value out of the lawnmowers on the tutorial levels is actually insane
2:06 I've never seen that pop up message
1. What's that on 18:01?
2. Why the graves removed by grave buster did not produce any coin at 36:01?
3. -Why the first zombie at 3-6 to 3-10 did not spawned at the place where the rake is? Yes, I know this uses manipulation, but I also think the first zombie always spawn where the garden rake is. (edit number I don't know: okay so the zombie is where it should be but visually it is on the other row... but then it is a different story for 3-10)-
35:42 That zombie grinder is incredible to watch
any plans for a 100% TAS?
That might actually take years
@@SolrAUwhat
First time seeing this, and this is really impressive!! I wonder when would we be able to get Sub 2, or is it outright impossible?
I think even if every wave goes as fast as possible, which the game limits you at 6 seconds, it barely goes under 2 hours, so I don't think it is possible
I've been a casual PvZ player for over a decade, and the speedrun has always facinated me, although i've never gotten into speedrunning this game as it seems far too RNG based for me to enjoy it, and this TAS only proved my initial fears, every single wave was perfect, without a single hitch, no human could ever get this kind of RNG
notable moments i saw were:
0:00 before the start, these spits are not WR, is this the sum of best of all the top players? that only makes this TAS more insane
really all of world 2 with all that grave manipulation, that was crazy
31:57 2-5, shoutout to humanity, keeping even with the TAS, if only for one level, still insane that people have replicated that within 0.1 seconds, i was really expecting the TAS to gain at least a second or two here
all of world 3's final waves, just super satasfying, and super fast
55:52 3-4, you started at 2k and ended at 93k, thats 91 diamonds in a row, i don't know the exact odds of a diamond dropping, but i'm willing to bet its either 0.1% or 0.01% (1/1,000 or 1/10,000), making 3-4 nothing short of absolutley insane
58:36 3-6, interesting stratagy, although the most suprising thing at first glance is the lack of cherry bomb, although i suppose as far as the TAS is concerned, cherry bomb and jalapeno are the same also, what? i thought the first zombie was always garunteed to be on the rake row, although it doesn't seem to have changed anything, which only makes that wierder
1:02:05 3-7, unsuprisingly a lot of the same as 3-6, and the rake is still funny the second time
1:05:44 3-8 puff shroom is a very interesting pick here, never thought a stalling strat would be good in a speedrun
1:08:44 3-9 is notable as perhaps the most normal level of the last 4, making it interesting by extent
1:12:53 3-10 is the single most satasfying thing I've ever seen, wow
I was expecting to not know what was going on in world 4, this is a plesant suprise, although im thinking this is just a QoL done through editing, rather then an in-game glitch
1:32:04 4-9 was the single biggest middle finger to baloon zombies I've ever seen, and i loved every second of it
1:34:50 4-10 probably has some super interesting stratagy, but, its 4-10 unfortunately
1:38:38 another thing i didn't know was possible, I assumed it always landed somewhere among your plants, good to know bungee's are going to be completley harmless
I find it hilarious that the TAS doesn't need garlic, thats RNG manip for you
2:07:51 5-10, unfortunately the -1:00:xx is a pipe dream, at least it's an hour under the actual WR, also, a two cycle zomboss is insanity
this was a super cool TAS, and a small note, you ended this TAS at $64k, you couldve manip'ed 64 fewer diamonds and saved yourself probaby weeks to months of manip, i gotta respect it though, 3-4 was really cool because of it
I’m glad you enjoyed watching the TAS! A couple things of note:
Overall, I would definitely say that the any% speedrun of the game is far more skill based than rng based. For the most part, rng enhances the speedrun, giving you a unique experience that you have to react to every single time you play.
Secondly, I did not use rng manipulation traditionally in order to create this TAS. Instead, I wrote over game memory to simulate the exact spawns, zombie speeds, etc. to show what perfect rng would look like, and for 3-4, I changed the odds of getting a diamond to be guaranteed (nornally it’s 12/30000 for normal zombies and multiplied by the zombie’s wave points)
Overall, I think this tas took me and a few others from the community around 6 months to create, with me setting up most of the python code to make changing spawns and other random events easier. And the comparison splits are actually my sum of bests at the time. 2-5 is an autoscroller outside of the final wave, but the tas had trouble closing the almanac for some reason, so it wound up marginally slower
@@aaronthewinner1818 that’s super interesting, I always assumed that good RNG was basically required for a good run, but the fact that it’s mostly skill definitely piques my interest, maybe I’ll give PvZ runs a shot at some point
Ah, okay, brute forcing the RNG makes a lot of sense, otherwise I was going to say it’s crazy you got this in just 6 months
3-4 was very satisfying
Me searching up "[Game name] speedrun tas" Knowing god gamn well im gonna watch 3 minutes of it and fk off
PvZ Speedrun, RNGesus Mode
I wonder why 2-5 is 0.25s slower
For some reason it didn’t close the almanac right away, I’ll have to look into that
How does this rng manipulation works? or what is the trick to get the best plants in conveyor belts and all final wave zombies spawn in just 1 lane?
6:35
Bro dug up 3 peashooter in 1 frame. XD
What happened to the fog in the night pool levels?
They used a mod to get rid of it. Since everything is predetermined, this was for our viewing pleasure since it didn’t effect gameplay in any way
I ate it
Crazy Dave was not playing dawg
writing into memory makes it less impressive but still very very cool project, also what's that empty plant at 18:01? also is pvz rng not pseudorandom? because if not ig that would justify writing into memory a bit more
It's pseudo random but there's no way to control it
Some of these people in the comments need to actually learn what a TAS is, instead of calling it "fake" and that its "cheating"
I reccomend Bismuth's video on the topic.
I like this 4 - 10,because in all other "10 levels" he just use instakill, in 4 - 10, he really need to play the game
27:52 - What is that beeping?
There were a couple times during the run where I set the program to plant something a bit early before another plant was used. This results in the game continually trying to plant every frame until it can (I have a check for whether the plant actually went down), resulting in the select plant noises stacking
1:25:23 That sync tho
On a level like 1-2 is it faster to place Sunflowers 1 row higher vertically as it reduces the travel time of sun before being "usable"?
im not sure the time it takes isnt fixed tbh
The sun becomes usable instantly after clicking it
how did you get the walnuts in walnut bowling to be red ones so many times?
rng manipulation
"rng manip 2 zombies lol" "RNG MANIP 2 FUCKING ZOMBIES LMAO"
Will there be a 100% TAS??
That might actually take years
I can’t wait to see the 100% tas
summary of the video:
i can bend reality to my liking
This is very cool! But couldn’t TAS use Wall-Nut to kill off some of the zombies with RNG manipulation to make the zombies allergic to the Nuts?
That's a console version thing
i mean in theory id think so but like i dont see why you would
@@rinn5238 Oh, never mind. Thanks for your correction.
@@TBNAfrangsYTThat is a cool thought though. It'd be funny to see wall-nut solo a bunch of zombies lol
this is actually something I've thought about working on, it might happen in the future, we'll have to see
How do you get the butter guy to shoot the butter Everytime?
Hi Aaron! Will you make a TAS for the minigames, puzzles, survivals etc.? Thanks in advance!
why aren't the bungee zombies targeting plants?
I would watch a tas dedicated to the vasebreaker puzzle games
How rare is it to get two high HP zombies right on top of each other?
Top runners: breaks 9 minutes for 1-4 exit. Tas be like, I can do that for 1-6 exit ez clap
This is cool asf
there's no way that bro has just a good gaming chair, he'd clearly need THE PERFECT gaming chair just to get this amount of luck
what's the counter for? it looks like you made an incredibly slow TAS before this one xD
What are the splits you are using?
What the hell was 3-4?!
Did you use non-randomizer? (Which is cheating since you modify game memory, but I'm not against it or anything)
check out the zomboss fight, also not against it but it hurts to watch the animations inconsistent with what's happening in game
curious, what tools specifically were used for this run?
other than the obvious rng manip of course
1:02:02

Perfect
What's the point of buying the rake in this run?
Yes
on the bowling game he just keeps getting exploding ones!!!
He even used explosives on 1-10, 2-10 and 3-10, but not 4-10.
6:36 What?? ⚠️Fail speedrun⚠️
Wondefrul run, nice rng manipulation
Why in 3-4 every zombie gave gem?
That is so he can buy rake and other seed slots further in the run. Technically, you could get a gem from every zombie, but the chances are astronomically low - but that's no problem when you have rng on your side
That was an amazing (yet not close to perfect) TAS!
I don’t know what you’re on about, this is pretty damn close
@@logert3921Not really considering close to perfect in TAS terms means only a few frames off from perfection. There's still many seconds, maybe even minutes worth of timesave that's possible.
@@KPoWasTaken The 6 second rule means that any imperfection is fine. There really isn’t any time save left, maybe at most 30 seconds
Lucky you omg 😮😮😮❤❤❤
So how was zombie rng manipulated?
There are special tools that can manipulate various variables in the game, and combining that with a lot of saving and loading, and you can create runs like this.
yo that's really cool
Why purchase the rake in 3-5 if it isn't even used until 3-6?
The game puts you directly in the shop on 3-5, so its faster than entering the shop again on 3-6
impressive
I wonder how much RNG manip was put into this run.
the way it plants things hurts my ocd
interesting 2nd level
Wait infa HAKER😮💨😮💨🤔🤔
1-8 TAS is just stupid. What tf is that final wave???
I think it's pretty obvious that all of the zombie placements are pre-determined. This is what a perfect RNG + TAS run would look like.
Using cheats is not a speed run
TAS fake
This... isn't being pushed as a legitimate speedrun though? Just a showcase of what a "perfect run" might look like using external tools and rng manipulation.
1:38:39 that sync tho
