D&D may have screwed up on the writing , but they have never, ever been bad showrunners. They have still crafted one of the greatest TV shows of all time. So eat those words.
Daniel James They messed up on the pacing and they chose to completely go in the opposite direction of several of the book characters. They decided to rush the ending with shortened seasons. Often, they seem to craft stories around actors instead of the other way around.

The show has suppased the books, what are they supposed to do, wait until George finishes the books before finishing the show? They had no idea George was going to take this long, they are writing baised off bulletpoints. You have to also mind, that they are writing scripts in a matter of months, while Georhe takes years. Not only that, but the actors also have other commitments, as well as the writers. You can tell by their earlier interviews that the writers had a path, and they were going to stick with it. They just 'kinda forgot' about that, and decided to take on other roles in movies. They rushed it, to get it out of the way. But still, they are not bad showrunners, they have still done a great job.
Daniel James There has to be some changes from the book to show and they aren’t expected to adapt is perfectly. They did go without source material for a while but that is still no excuse for the utter collapse of the show. Furthermore, some of their changes from the book like what they did with the sand snakes are just confusing. If they were gonna devote some much time to them, why make up a super lazy and contrived plot when they could have used a condensed or simplified version of their book story.
