It is his father who at the time was suffering from a very dire kidney disease and in desperate need of a kidney transplant. He was running out of time and it didn't look like they were going to be able to find a match when James wrote this song. But, because of this song, donors came from everywhere and they finally found a match. The last I heard, his father had the transplant and was doing just fine.

They were in the EU, come to Austria we r all donors and We have the alps and bikers, u can always get an organ here, and survival chances in surgery in Austria for lungs I know, it’s 25% higher than uk 75%. Kidney is way easier

The man in the video is James Blunts's father, James Blunt wrote the song for his father who is dying, his kidneys are failing. There only working at 11%, James Blunt was a reconnaissance officer and a Captain in the Life Guards regiment of the British Army, he served under NATO during the 1999 Kosovo War.
Fortunately though his father isn't dying anymore cuz the distant cousin was able to donate his kidney but at the time of this video he didn't know that and that's what's powerful is the emotion and so many people can relate from everywhere
Yes Miray, that is his Father. At the time he wrote the song, Colonel Charles Blount, (Jame,s real Surname) was suffering from renal failure and had been given a few weeks to live. Thankfully he has had a kidney transplant and is doing well. They were both in the British Army, in the Household Cavalry. When their not riding around London on horseback being photographed by tourists they are a light armoured regiment. Captain James Blount served in the Balkan war in the late 1990,s. His troop was ordered to occupy Pristina Airport. But the Russians got there first, the US commander ordered him to open fire on them, but he refused saying he wasn,t prepared to potentially start world war 3.So his troop blocked all the exits until the Russians invited them onto the Airport. That was his Dad. James wanted something he could always have of his father. He would only do one take, he loses it twice in the top notes because you can’t really cry and sing every note.
His Dad only had weeks then and when he finished the song everyone in that room was crying. Except his Dad. He told them he wasn’t dead yet but this song hits home in all of us. Both James and his father were Military. A distant cousin they didn’t know about saw the song and came forward. He has the same name as his Dad and he was a match.
James Blunt is an incredible talent and songwriter. He plays piano. You need to hear him sing Your Beautiful. It isn’t sad, just beautiful.

the record company wanted to edit parts and redo because at points his voicing was cracking (from emotion) ...but James said u release it as is or I'll release it myself
It was after he released this song that ppl poured in trying to donate their kidneys. Thankfully, they found a match from his father's distant cousin who shares his father's name.. Charlie. But the amount of people that came forward to help.. Was just incredible. Beautiful song, broke my heart when I first heard it without knowing the back story...as I lost my dad back in 05'. Anyway, I'm new to your page, but may I suggest a blind react to Chris Stapleton's song, 'Fire Away' if you've never saw that video or heard the song.
When he sings you can feel my hand on your arm and Charles reaches over and puts his hand on James arm was the breaking moment for me. That was Charles saying "i'm still the father and protector of my son"

His dad had stage 4 kidney failure when James wrote this and a donor couldn't be found. After the video was released a distant cousin came forward who was a match. He donated all the profits from this song to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity (both him and his dad were in the military)
You're so lucky to have your parents. My father died from cancer & my mother from alzeimers disease. Life go on, but I shall never forget my beautiful parents. James Blunt's father was in the video. xx

My mother endured Alzheimer’s for 22 years lucky to be with her when she passed. It’s nice to be there till the last breath it’s also a recurring nightmare. Miss them both and love them still. I lost my Dad 13years ago. I still beat myself up for not calling him just the day before. I was active Army in another country and had a bad day. So I went home feeling sorry for myself only five hours later I was told he passed. I can never make it better. Time hasn't healed that

Its his real life happening.
The emotion in his voice and tears in his eyes are real. The song was a goodbye to his father that both knew was facing imminent death from Stage 4 kidney cancer. His father sat beside him the whole song.
After this went out, a distant cousin got tested and matched his Dad. She donated a kidney and his Dad recovered.
