  • Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
    And sings a little song
    Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
At a time when Johnny Lackland
    over England was the king
    Dominique was in the backland
    fighting sin like anything
    Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
    And sings a little song
    Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
    Now a heretic one day
among the thorns forced him to crawl
    Dominique with just one prayer
made him hear the good Lord's call
    Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
    And sings a little song
    Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
    Without horse or fancy wagon
he crossed Europe up and down
    Poverty was his companion
as he walked from town to town
    Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
    And sings a little song
    Never asking for reward

He just talks about the Lord
One day in the budding Order
there was nothing left to eat
    Suddenly two angels walked in
with a load of bread and meat
    Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along
    And sings a little song
    Never asking for reward

He just talks about the Lord
    Grant us now oh Dominique
the grace of love and simple mirth
That we all may help to quicken
godly life and truth on earth
    Dominique, nique, nique,
over the land he plods along

+kelsey backus I actually clicked the video because I thought it would sound terrible in English, and wanted to see how bad. Translating most songs from one language to another usually causes the song to not rhyme anymore, but this one actually still has a decent flow, though I'm sure they probably changed some words around. Is totally better in French though. Also, I think the Dominique the song is referring to is Saint Dominic, the guy who founded the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church, and may have been one of the main people involved with the Spanish Inquisition.

A középső bátyám miközben a metélt tésztát ette, ennek a dalnak ritmusára szedte fel a tésztát a villára, és közben az első sorát énekelte. Ettől nagyanyánk mindíg mérgesd lett, a mai napig sem tudjuk miért? De még a délutáni iskolába menet, a bátyám még az ablakból beénekelte az első sort! Ez körülbelül 1966-1967-ben történt.

Why do I feel nostalgia from this song even though I wasn't born yet at that time?

1964. Folk songs were big back then, and I guess they decided to make it folky when they translated it. Still makes me roll my eyes. The French version is definitely more the real deal.

I'm here after this tune popped into my head. Heard it in French class when I was 10 or 12. Never knew what it was about. Just a catchy tune. Found it by googling "Dominique-nique-nique" remembering the French spelling. Read the lyrics first in French, then read the English translation. Then listened to the French singing nuns version. Wow, what a blast from the distant past. Must've been 1965 or thereabouts.
Sure beats the poison being pounded into the heads of subsequent generations. There is nothing so good that man can't corrupt, and nothing so evil that can't be turned to a Godly purpose.
    Don't watch AHS. Too dark.

Never heard this WASP version before. The Lyrics kind of keep the feeling and spirit of the original (not very Americans would know who the Albigeois were or the Albigensian Crusade). Cute and quaint.

I was 7 years old when this song first came out in the U.S., I also had the original vinyl album. When the album was released on cd some 35 years later I bought that. The album and the cd contain the French and English lyrics, I looked at the cd lyrics (need special glasses to be able to see it), and the English lyrics were identical to the Mary Ford version except she substituted 'looking' with 'asking' and she omitted 2 of 7 verses.

"On this day in ’85, the Singing Nun (Marie Jeanine Deckers) took her own life in a suicide pact with her life-partner, Annie Pecher. Her song, the 1963 smash 'Dominique', sold over 1.5 million copies, winning a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Song. As a kid, I remember Deckers and her 3 fellow nuns appearing on Ed Sullivan… The song was such a cultural phenom that a (mostly fictional) feel-good movie was made of her life with Debbie Reynolds, and Sally Fields' ‘The Flying Nun’ was definitely influenced by Decker’s popularity. Deckers was a Belgian singer-songwriter and a member of the Dominican Order as Sister Luc Gabriel. An unlikely pop star, she wrote 4 albums of songs - many that were lyrically either ‘approved’ or ‘censored’ by her Mother Superior. She was not allowed to write any songs that were considered ‘sad’ and, of course, any topic that was controversial was forbidden. When she wrote a song in 1967 defending the use of contraception, the Church pressured her touring mngmnt to cancel an entire tour even tho’ she’d left the order by then. Though the royalty agreement between the Church and Deckers was never disclosed, apparently her diocese received her royalties w/o her knowledge… and later, when she left the order, she discovered $100,000. had been paid to the Church unbeknownst to her. To make matters worse, her label, Philips, pretty much took the rest - leaving her financially crippled. Though Deckers never ‘came out’ about her sexuality, she spent most of her life with her lover, Annie Pecher, and struggling with financial ruin, Church condemnation, a faltering career, and repression from society in general… Deckers suffered a mental breakdown. Shortly afterwards, she and Pecher took their own lives in their Belgian apartment. For those who discount the damage religion has done for centuries to gay and lesbian people… to those who are, right now, passing legislation to forbid young people from discussing sexuality or even saying the word, ‘gay’… I say, ‘f you’. To those (religious or not) who support with words and deeds the acceptance of the LGBT community… I say, 'thanks', and may whatever god you worship bless and keep you.

OK so atheist are not evil, as one, I love this song! I will teach this, happy tune song, to my babies, and will show them the animated version of "The Prince of Egypt" with a couple, awesome "Bible Stories" that I feel they should know. If they choose to be Christian or Catholic or Buddhist or nonaggressive Muslim, then I will be there for them and support them in their beliefs. Even if I hate the death of religion. BTW stop the hate on Jews! They are one of the first religions and they deserve respect from all of us. I am a Christian born and an atheist at heart, and will forever protect, share and love the Jewish people for their natural wisdom. At least give thanks to good morals and good raisings! May all be happy and content!

Iqqiqqi, this is great, you did a wonderful job. Mary Ford is also awesome.
It is depressing to hear from so many people that are ignorant.
Firstly, I am a Christian, and the translation doesn't really matter. As some have said, the message is the same. Of course, it would be nice to translate cleanly, but if this were possible, why would we speak in different languages in the first place? For those who don't understand this, get over it.
Secondly, for those who don't get the message, or who criticize the message, get over it. This is not so much a religious message as it is a moral one. The point is that humble people who do their thing (work their job, live their life) right, and who don't ask for anything in return, will be rewarded for it later. It makes no difference where the reward comes from, or who it come from. Unfortunately, if you don't believe this, it's probably why you don't have anything of value in this world.
Thirdly, people should stop complaining about people not making any sense when they themselves a) don't make any sense, and b) can't spell or use proper grammar. Nothing is more annoying than a hypocrite.
