  • It’s one of Ireland’s most baffling mysteries. An ordinary couple leave their ordinary Cork home on a regular day never to be seen again.
And thirty three years later Gardai have launched a fresh appeal for information on Conor and Sheila Dwyer who were both in their early 60s when they vanished without a trace.
Nicola speaks with Irish Independent journalist Ralph Riegel about the puzzling case of a couple who never came home.

My impression is that he looked after a man's cars, with the cars being in Ireland and the owner being in Germany. If he was care-taker of property for an absentee owner, his employer wouldn't be checking his work daily. You have a care-taker so you don't have to check your property daily. Probably the employer only contacted his care-taker when he was coming to Ireland and wanted a particular car to be ready to drive.

They probably just went for a drive, swerved to avoid a deer (or some animal) and crashed, be it into a body of water or a bog or drove off a cliff or something equally mundane but horribly unfortunate, and their remains have yet to be discovered. Doesn't always have to be a mystery theater production. Either way, it's still a tragedy for the couple (may they rest in peace and rise in glory) and their poor family..

The only place a car can be hidden for so many years is under water. Conors colleague and friend noticed a change in Conor before they went missing. He seemed depressed so maybe he or both of them decided to end their lives. Or maybe Conor didn't want to leave his wife behind. At the time they went missing the quays were unprotected and there were no cameras . It was only in recent years barriers were put up on quays after a number of cars went into the water. They often drove to Cobh for a trip so it may not have been the River Blackwater. They didn't take their passports or money. The ports were checked
    They didn't leave the country.

Sounds most likely an accident and the car is in water. They could have gone for a drive that day and travelled some distance from home, so wherever they are has not been or cannot be searched because it could be anywhere. As you say, the car is vital to solving the case. As a car enthusiast, I can say that the car is the Toyota Cressida model which was discontinued in 1980. The car would now be at least 44 years old and Japanese cars of that era were very prone to rust. It is likely that littlecus now left if it. The engine, gearbox, axles, as well as glass and plastic parts are all that are likely to remain. The Gardai should be requesting people to report such remains if cars with the old Toyota logo on the engine. This could helo solve the mystery and bring closure to the family.

In 1991 you didn't need a passport to travel to the UK from Ireland as a foot passenger, it's only in the last decade or so it's been introduced. And pre 1994 (the MS Estonia disaster), there was no obligation for operators to have a list of passengers. Maybe the car was ditched and one or both travelled as foot passengers across to the UK. Personally though, I think they ended crashing into a river or lake.

I don't know why he wasn't found within the first few days, to be honest, it should have been the first place that was searched. My real gut feeling, given the circumstances surrounding their disappearance is that it was a suicide pact or fatal accident and they've left in the car and driven it into deep water. And it's never been found. The Blackwater is a very substantial river. It could easily conceal a submerged car for ever. The simplest explanation for missing people in mysterious circumstances is generally the right one. That doesn't mean this doesn't deserve further investigation.

I was raised on a farm in Yorkshire at the end of the lane,ud be amazed how many useless suburban drivers out there who would come down our lane and end up in a stream upside down, hanging like chandeliers upside down with seat belts on and one family even drove up a track of ours and drove directly in to a man made slurry pit we had, even with a brown crust of chicken and cow shit stinking with flies,I had a black lad I palled up with and invited him down,he too attempted to walk across the slurry and rocked up at mine with stinking white jeans on,u could see the shit had got right up to his waist before he realised and dragged himself out,I told him u should be dead, lucky but trust me town folk get in scrapes constantly when they go rural🇬🇧👍

Same thing happened to me. I was walking to shops after six in the evening, it was dark so must've been autumn or winter time maybe. In Kildare back between 2005-2009. In the field the other side of the ditch from the road, I suddenly saw big round bright lights swoop up on their side and hover up across the field and into the air. No sound just silence. Even in that moment I thought, no one is gonna believe that. So I told one or two people and they just dismissed it, which I expected. When I went home I looked up a UFO reportings site based in Roscommon. I entered my story to the site but no one got back to me. That happened and that's that.

So he killed his wife buried her - left all documents and items behind but drove away in the missing car - he could have created a new identity & a new life with a new woman/family which he may have already started in Germany, while he worked there. I’d be looking there, interviewing his former German co-workers and boss (probably be retired now) - someone there knows something - but he’s not living under his old Irish name - if someone had killed both of them they would have stolen more than just the car. Just because a man looks and acts charming & gentlemanly does not mean he loves his wife. My Ex had everyone fooled - even my family members (not my mother but everyone else) because psychopathic narcissists can be super charming - but underneath they harbour intense rage, perpetrate physical & horrible emotional abuse on those close to them and are super revenge oriented. They want to punish people. What confirmed his pathological nature to me was when my ex stabbed a diaper pin through my very young baby daughter’s skin (two holes - one in - one out) and did not stop when she screamed that scream you know is caused by intense pain. He said he was trying to make the cloth diaper tight. Then he did it again a few weeks later & I switched to paper diapers - feel so bad that I didn’t do it sooner - forget saving the planet if he was going to do that to our tiny baby. No remorse - no feeling aghast at what he had inflicted on her. Paul Bernardo who is CDA’s worst serial rapist & killer of young teen girls (including his sister-in-law and so many girls he’s suspected of having killed - but cannot be proved) was extremely charming. He was found by local police because his car matched witness descriptions of the car that kidnapped Kristin French - but he charmed his way out of being arrested at the door of his home. His evil accomplice of the same character, Karla Homolka, sweet-talked (by playing the emotionally battered wife syndrome card) her way into being charged with just manslaughter & serving only 12 years in jail for 3 admitted killings of teen girls, one her sister (such a miscarriage of Justice!) Bernardo’s lawyer, Ken Murray should be in prison, too. He was acquitted of charges even though He knew about the hidden recordings of the rapes & murders in their home (hidden in a cavity where a light fixture sat - police search & forensic staff had missed them) Someone of conscience in his law firm forced him to tell police where the tapes were. Bernardo/Homolka we’re young to sell them as snuff films. If Murray had revealed the location of the tapes - earlier - before the Scarborough Crown Prosecutor made that shit deal with Homolka - that evil woman would still be incarcerated in segregation - only allowed out for an hour’s exercise as Bernardo is/was. I think they moved him to a different laxer prison which caused a public uproar. Homolka got pregnant by a guard while in prison! She can literally charm the pants off anyone. The point I’m making is DON’T BE FOOLED BY CHARM! Super charming = psychopath to me. They can lie & cheat lie detectors because they have zero remorse or fear - their blood pressure does not go up when they lie. They arrogantly believe they are infinitely more clever than police or prosecutors and can fool anyone. Lots of today’s politicians live on the spectrum of this evil charm grid. Beware.

To me it seems like the couple staged the whole thing as if to not draw suspicion. The fact that the house looked immaculately clean, none of their personal belongings were taken, nothing to suggest there was some kind of struggle. I think the couple simply wanted to dissappear and start a new life somewhere without anyone knowing.

That said I'd agree with the accidental death in a lake or river when on a day trip in the car. Or they witnessed something they shouldn't have and thus met with foul play (probably still ended up in water otherwise difficult to get rid of the car)

I just looked up their address. They're in that river, almost certainly. What about bringing over specialists. Theres a group in the states "adventures with purpose", it might seem silly to bring people from the states over but these guys have found cars in rivers that have been searched by multiple teams prior to them. They search the same exact area as other teams and whether because of their equipment or expertise, they find the cars in the rivers and lakes with missing people. Honestly when i looked up the home of this couple i was thinking ok if theres water within 5km then maybe... the river is right there. Its almost certain thats where theyve ended up in my opinion.

I mean to be clear no matter how extensive police searches claim to have been, the identification of vehicles in rivers 20 plus years ago was less possible than today with the latest sonar tech, and people like adventures with purpose (look them up on youtube) Are hypwr specialised in undewater vehicle I.d and recovery, and with figuring out where people are most likely to have entered the river.
