  • In this video I show you how to use clearer boards also known as escape boards.
    These are an excellent method of removing honey from your hives without disturbing the bees.
    Its an excellent way of emptying the honey supers of bees.
    Its fast, efficient and easy on the bees. The only downside of it requires two visits to the Apiary. One in the evening and again the following morning.
    But for me this is my favourite way of removing honey supers from honeybees.

    Thanks for another great video but today I listened via headphones, I've never appreciated how good your'e intro music is until now. Jazz around 6mins was an unexpected treat.

    Hi. This year I obtained over 78kg of honey from only one hive. I live in South Yorkshire. Last weekend I removed all supers. Most of the season I had four supers on the standard BS brood. Next year I will have two production hives so probably I will be able to get over 100kg from just two hives.

      @@gwenyngruffydd retired retired, bloody text have to read em before sending, lol as an a salute beginner would you recommend national or poly hives, as I live 600 ft above sea level in Scottish Borders I am looking at both for warmth and compatibility sooo it’s confusing and complicating my choice, I will only ever be a hobby beekeeper so any advice would be appreciated, regards

      My advice is go with what you like. Both have their pros and cons. We did a video on it a while back;
      th-cam.com/video/TjgdVNtTkQI/w-d-xo.html
      Personally I run mainly wooden hives and we have one site at 900ft all wood. Poly is good though. Nothing wrong with having the two as long as their compatible with each other.

    Thank You Gwenyn Gruffydd. I took a big step forward today and popped in to your shop and bought my first hive. Not got everything yet (including bees) but its a start and I'm really looking forward to start my trip as a bee keeper. Your help and advise was amazing like your videos. Will be back for the rest at some point. The jar of honey I got is tasty as always and cant recommend it enough.
    PS Freya enjoyed walking around your shop and would of loved to of stayed longer.

    Great to see a hands on video with the bees, have missed them. Had our hives a year last June so it's our first proper year. Had 92 8oz jars of honey so far, absolutely delighted. Four hives but really only two have produced as one was a swarm the other a split. We were able to brush the bees off. Do you leave any honey supers on through the winter for them? Have you had any issues with was moth storing them the way you do? Thank you

      Thanks 😊
      That’s amazing!! Well done 😊👍🏻👍🏻
      Sometimes I winter the bees on brood and a half but normally just on a single brood box.
      I store the supers wet. Don’t tend to get a wax moth problem at all. Brood frames on the other hand I do get a problem from time to time.

    Thanks. Learnt a lot. Just a quick question. Can a queen get through a clearing board?

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never tried. Probably wouldn’t work if there is brood above the clearer board. The brood needs to be under the crown board.

    Great vid do you store your supers with wet frames or do you bring them back for the Bees after extraction cheers

      Hi,
      I store them wet. I stack and pallet wrap them to keep them sealed and secure.

    Love the videos thank you. I have 4 colonies, 3 in hives and one in a NUC box. I've taken the capped honey but left them the rest. I've put varoa treatment strips in but should I leave the supers on until they've eaten the rest of the super honey, should I remove queen excluder? They are all new this year 2 colonies which I artificially swarmed.

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you 😊
      If you’ve put the varroa treatment in already then leave the supers on. Don’t extract the honey after it’s been exposed to any kind of treatment. Leave them on the hives for the bees to eat the honey.
      Yes remove the Queen excluder and make sure the hives are heavy. Feed them syrup if their not heavy. Hives need to have roughy 15-20kg of stores.
      Hope this helps 😊👍🏻

      Hi John,
      That’s quite normal for bees to become aggressive at this time of year. I have plenty of bees that are extremely aggressive now that we’re calm.

    Just wondering if you have any advice
    I have some frames in the supers that are only half capped they have been like this for about three weeks now
    Should I leave them longer or can I harvest the honey now and eat the honey quickly
    Thanks

      Hi,
      If you extract honey in a nice warm dry room it should be fine especially if your going to eat it quick!

      @@gwenyngruffydd thanks what are the benefits of extracting in a warm room

    • @gwenyngruffydd
      @gwenyngruffydd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The honey flows out of the frames faster and can evaporate the moisture out of the honey.
      When I say warm room I mean any room that’s hot😊

    I opened my mouth too early (flood plain) stumps are easily removed by mixing enough ammonium nitrate to diesel to make a thick paste then drill some holes in the stump, add the paste anda det and ???? did anyone see a stump? they can fly you know.
