This is my hometown as most of you know it burned last Thursday. I spent three days not knowing if my twin brother Terry was okay. I talked to him the morning of the fire and finally found out Sunday he was okay. He stayed behind because of his son. I have yet be able to speak to him. But today I was watching this on TH-cam and there his is. Tears of joy flowed down my face and happiness filled my heart. I am so happy that's he's okay and so is Damion..

I was raised in Paradise and returned there just a few years ago. My house burned to the ground - absolutely nothing left. I was also at the town meeting seen in this video, held in the neighboring city of Chico. I found it disgusting that my own mayor asked that a resident who had lost his home actually be removed for simply asking a VERY legitimate question. PG&E has already been found negligent - to the tune of 40+ billion dollars - for not maintaining their easements elsewhere in CA. People have died as a result. I attended the first town meeting held regarding this fire as well, and the police presence when the PG&E rep was here for the second one was *much* greater. He had better have good security as long as he's in town.
PG&E had notified the town of Paradise months prior that if the conditions warranted it, they could shut the power down to parts or all of the town as part of a 'Red Alert' in order to prevent fires from starting. Shortly before the fire (*late* the night before...as well as a day or two before) an SMS message came through on my phone regarding impending high winds of up to 45mph for my county (Butte) through Fri or Sat. At no point that night did PG&E cut the power (in my zone - 4), nor in the wee hours of the following morning when the winds had really kicked up or when the fire was spotted in Pulga and then came through Paradise. It's also been said by those in Concow/Pulga, that not long before the first spot fire was reported in the area there was a glitch at the local PG&E power plant (or whatever the equivalent is), which many think is related.

    • @bookdream

@ItsZachTV Why wasn't it valid? Because the answer is difficult? He didn't ask "How do you feel about being responsible for the fires?" for example. That would be a trick question obviously. But an angry emotional resident whose probably gone through hell very recently, asking them if they have any responsibility in this is totally reasonable.
They could answer "no" and give an explanation. They could say "yes" and apologize/explain how they will help the community or offer a recovery plan or something. I get that this is might be a tricky situation and there sometimes isn't an easy answer, but it is a valid question, even if the presentation of the question may have been slightly disruptive.

Notice that the homes and buildings are burned to the ground but the trees are still intact and green?
Here's what's really causing the fire problem:
[1] Build a huge subdivision in every hot, dry place there is in California.
[2] Every summer, the whole damn place goes up in an inferno.
    [3] Rebuild again
    [4] The place burns again.

This may already be here in one or more of the 1000+ comments, but just in case it isn't:
What's not mentioned in the video about PG&E is that for that $2.5B in expected payments for last year's fires (doesn't include this catastrophe), they have filed a request for rate increase to the PUC (Public Utilites Commission that regulates rates and operations of all California utilities) to cover the expected losses. That's bad enough that they expect consumers to pay for their negligence and ignorance. But get this - part of the same rate increase request was to provide higher dividend payouts to stockholders!!! WTF

two crickets rubbing their legs together could have started that fire. I lived in Paradise from 1975 to 1978. Wonderful place. Worked for Art Stone Plumbing next to the KFC which burned down. There were lots of brush/forest fires in the region during the drought then. They had water rationing and warm dry winters. Very sad not only for the horrifying deaths but for the beautiful community lost. Will take many decades for the community and the trees to come back.

OK, overall a good video. However, I doubt the 80 football fields claim. 80 x 100 yards = 8000 yards x 3 feet = 24,000 feet / 5280 = 4.5 miles per minute. One travels 1 mile per minute at 60 mph. So, to travel 4.5 miles per minute (4.5 x 60), the fire would be travelling *272.7 mph*. Maybe they meant "8" football fields per minute. 27 mph sounds more likely.

It is true that these wildfires are natural, and it is one's responsibility to build houses in such forests only when they are intended to be very mobile, disposable, or otherwise temporary. Don't worry; U.S. Californian celebrities like Kanye West hired private fire fighters to protect their stuff, and U.S. California will always try to control nature by using helicopters dropping bucket-loads of chemicals and/or water to please. I am sorry for harsh words, but one has to respect nature. If the Bear Republic would consult ancestors of the land that they temporarily occupy, they will find answers.

Thank you, we've been fighting for indigenous fire burning rights for over 25yrs. We have begged the U.S.F.S. and CALFIRE to practice indigenous forest managment for over 25 yrs. We predicted these disasters. Our voices fall of deaf ears. When conquistadors, settelers and gold miners all came to California they all took note of us California Indians burning the majority of the state. These burns are needed to prevent massive fire storms. Part of our ancestrial knowledge is a type of indigenous fire science, just like Pacific islanders can navigate the oceans, reading the clouds, currents, stars and winds. California is an arid state. Colonizers move the water with massive irrigation systems making it appear lush, where it is indeed NOT. That is a dangerous thing living on top of the lands instead of with the lands. Settelers have moved so fast ignoring the original people's knowledge, knowledge that is so utterly valuable and important, could save lives and help everyone. This knowledge comes from thousand years of observations of the heavens and this earth.

I lived in Paradise Pines (Magalia, just north of Paradise) for 10 years and raised y kids there for 10 years. We were in the last big fire there and at that time I called PGandE and told them they HAVE to bury ALL powerlines to keep our community safe. Most other towns have buried power lines and when a section goes down, it is not that expensive to replace it with an underground, safer, line. But they told me it was "too expensive". Idiots. Look what it cost them now. billions of dollars and their immortal souls. The heartless Bastards. My heart is there with all you people in Paradise and Magalia.

    • @danthomas9077
      @danthomas9077 6 ปีที่แล้ว

NO, most other towns don't have buried power lines, in fact very few do in America. You say you lived in Paradise, you should understand just how BIG California is and how many thousands of miles of power lines there are, it's an impossible task and it IS "too expensive" to bury lines, the customers couldn't afford the rates if PG&E spent billions, it's the rate payers money they'd be spending, would you like to pay a huge power bill every month? Anyone with a lick of common sense could figure that out.
Very few fires are started by power lines, 84% are cause by humans/human activity, we could spend trillions and bury every line, we would still have fires.
You woman think about everything with emotions, common sense and logic is never used.

They could make a great film about this. About survivors escaping and those who stayed, about the firefighters and medical personnel. They could include the fact that the National Guard were deployed at the Mexican border but not at the disaster zone. They could also have PG&E as the bad guys, the person asking the question "are you responsible for the fire" and the security intervening sound like they are already from a film.

Place blame on '4' different situations that came together to form the cause of 'this singled out' horrific event ...
1 ) electrical - deemed as most possible cause for spark (ignition)
2 ) drought - overly dry and very low humidity levels
3 ) wind - overly windy with gusting conditions
    AND
4 ) tree huggers - never forget the 'plant a tree foundation' years ago along with the statewide law to cancel clearing land of trees and brush which only help fuel n' spread flames to such devastation
( Other area fires may have had a different #1 above BUT they all contained the other 3 )

If you want to save your house or at least some part of it. Turn on the sprinkler system 24 hours a day and let it run non-stop. The reason the fire is spreading so quick because the soil is supper dry and strong wind. When it reach to a super soaking wet border of your house, it will go around it. But strong wind can blow fire to the house if the house is dry. So adjust the all sprinkler heads and let it turn 45 degree to the house as well. And evecuate, the smoke will kill you. People die of smoke, not the fire.

An adventurous modern-day homesteader came upon some land surrounded by a lusty green forest, cleared a plot, decided to build a home, was soon followed by other home builders, followed by supporting businesses and all the amenities that make up a civilized community. Then as if overnight, that once robust green forest, due to climate change, became bone dry, twiggy, overgrown with dead wood, rather than abandon their investment, stayed on, hoping for the return of the forest lust, in spite of realizing living there was like being surrounded by gallons of drums of a flammable liquid, threating to ignite at any moment…

Another point of view to consider for Pacific Gas and Energy is one day's notice isn't enough time for customers of theirs who have medical equipment that relies on that power for them to stay alive. Look at El Paso Electric when they turned off their power and had a customer die because of it. There may be a good chance it was from their equipment, but they had too much liability to turn those lines off too quickly and have people die because of it. Better brush removal management by the California State Parks around these lines is really what needs to be addressed after this disaster, and have FEMA and PGE help pay for it.
