    I think that little bus really made a good account of itself!
    For the price of 3 B & Q wheelbarrows, that little car got you to the Netherlands and back without any problems. Impressive.

      It's sad that village and small town dealers have gone. They often dealt in lesser known brands ignored by the volume sellers, and knew customers by name. Flowers for lady buyers and a card at Christmas, type of outlets. An illuminated sign was as corporate as it got.

    I remember years ago on a trip to the Netherlands on a bicycle tour. I noticed around built up areas a road sign indercating an instruction obviously aimed at motorists. I asked a local what it meant and he firmly told me it was remind motorist in these areas that they are a guest on the road and everyone else has priority over them. I thought blimey imagine telling that to a British motorist.

      As a Dutch, I can vouch for that observation! Our Big Cities in the West are doing everything they can to ban automobilism in favor of bicyclism. There don't seem to apply any rules for people that are fit enough to move about on two wheels or feet.

    Certainly in Germany, if a speed sign on an Autobahn has "bei nasse" underneath it, that does mean the speed limit applies when it's wet. And yes, road manners have seriously deteriorated in the UK. Also, it's nice to see that the road surface changing the second you get into Belgium hasn't changed in 25 years!

      I remember being on Pistonheads more than 20 years ago complaining about the decline in driving standards. I think the plain truth is most people are bad drivers, but as the years have gone on, traffic got more dense and there's just more idiots per square mile, rather than as a proportion of drivers as a whole.

    • @HowardLeVert
      @HowardLeVert 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@darknewt9959 I noticed a marked deterioration once people were encouraged to go back to work rather than work from home - and I'm sad to say that the German SUV driver flashing their headlights at you to get out of their way has returned :(

    Back in 1992 I bought a 10 year old Talbot Alpine for £250, which plugged on cheaply for a few years. Another scrap Alpine bought for £35 and stripped for parts did help the cause.
    In 2005, I bought a 12 year old Cavalier with 200k miles for £175. It even had 9 months MOT and 3 months tax. The seller had been offered £175 as a p/x but the garage were going to scrap it and after it had served them well for 9 years, they couldn’t face it being crushed. All seems a long time ago when I see s/h car prices now.

    Know what the scene I liked best was in this most enjoyable video? The sight of you relaxing in the back of the Kenari, having just discovered the seatback actually reclined in even this poverty-spec model, and looking comfy with a drink while the rain pelted down outside. Ah, looxury! And cup holders, too! Can't buy such a comfy seat for the sitting room for 200 quid.
    If the car has to be scrapped because of next month's MOT, you should save the engine/ECM to put into Chemmy. Not using oil is quite a big plus and who's going to notice half-a dozen lost horsepower at Wales speeds? I suspect it's as perky as Chemmy's used-up motor anyway. Plus, you never know, perhaps some of the brake bits fit as well.
    Just a thought.

    • @HubNut

      The Charade has a variable valve timing version of the engine so it isn't a straight swap. Sensors and ECU will be different.

    • @anaveragejoe4869
      @anaveragejoe4869 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The thing is the Kenari isn't even a base spec, being a GXi it's the top of the range one, essentially what Perodua did was crammed the 1L engine into a base trim for the UK market.
      In Malaysia the trim that this car has would go on to the EX base, minus the airbags, and some UK/EU exclusive parts.

    What a brilliant little car. I can imagine it doesn’t feel great after extended periods of motorway driving and getting into an ‘executive’ car with cruise control must’ve been a pleasant respite. Notwithstanding though, that little Perodua is a remarkable car. The front grille and lights give it characterful looks, too.

    @Hubnut Think like a Scot whenever you try to pronounce anything in Dutch. The way a Scot would pronounce the word "how" is exactly the same way the Dutch pronounce a syllable like "Zui" (so with a heavy Scottish accent) The rest of the villages' name is like you reckoned.
    So for your english tongue you could have a go at "Zowlichem" with a heavy Scottish accent, it will sound quite Dutch that way.
    Zuilichem.

    The E46 probably has the M54 or the M52 engine if it is an early one like it looks like to be the case. Bulletproof engines if correctly serviced on oil changes. The Vanos can go and the crankcase ventilation system sometimes needs reconditioning.

    If your doing Holland in the future consider the Rotterdam - Hull route. Leave at 18.00 and arrive at about 8.00 the next morning. Let the boat do the driving whilst you sleep. In Holland you'll seldom be more than 1.5 hrs from the Europoort.
    A good night's sleep good breakfast - then from Hull to Telford in 3.5 hrs then over the border to reunite in the land of the fleecey brotherhood.
    Used it many times to avoid the channel ports, London the M25 , M1 and bits of the M6.....

    Another top vid with excellent bluebird headlight wiper action.
    Great to see an example of people merging early and traffic flowing. I have a friend who is a civil engineer who has worked on traffic flow plans for road works and improved junctions, he says all the computer models show that if everyone merged as soon as possible the traffic would gently slow to the reduced speed limit and continue flowing through the restrictions smoothly however the highway code contradicts this,says you may use all the available road and some members of the great British motoring public pretend that means it's compulsory.

Like the Perodua, it's a bargain basement box, so I'll forgive the lack of sound deadening, especially as I'm getting just under 60mpg out of something that weighs as much as a politician's promises yet packs a 110bhp punch. Fair play tyou for pedalling that little gem all that way. Ironically, more comfy in the rear seat. Good caper. Summer's here, rain's got warm.

    Your little Produa did extremly well and at 50mpg very repectable and one thing is the lack of oil burning means the engine is in pretty good condition and at £200 an absolute bargain even if l convert that into Australian dollars and a very well spent £200

    I have noticed that the Perodua has also had some wheel modifications since being in the Netherlands.

    The roadtax according to weight is true, but if you drive a car older than 40years you are roadtax free! And yes, petrol is very expensive in The Netherlands! You where talking about: 'Sort of a roundabout'. They are called in The Netherlands and Belgium 'punaise', translated: 'pushpin'! They are always on a somewhat higher road crossing and just painted circles! 😊

    I think you need to get the seats out of that Green Kenari - they looked magnificent. Your road trip videos are often a trip down memory lane for me and I am surprised by how big the cross channel "Boats" have got.

    A strange thing happened to me whilst watching this...I found myself warming to a car that would never have interested me at all before (my teenage years found me lusting after XR this or GT that).
    Mr Hubnut you could sell sand to the arabs... thanks for yet another enjoyable, informative and entertaining video.

    I'm surprised that Ian didn't mention the lack of pot-holes on the roads in the Netherlands, whereas here in the UK pot holes appear EVERYWHERE... Nonetheless, the Kenari coped with everything admirably. What a great little car.
