Totally agree. I'm 82 and I do math problems to keep my brain in gear. Concepts are sometimes difficult to understand, but like anything else, if you keep at it you can get better and better. I do suffer from occasional mind-slips, but I can still follow a mathematical argument. And, given the amount of free resources availble these days, there's just no excuse for not learning.

The worst thing you can do and the society can do, is to assume everyone is the same and implement one size fits all approach.
Sometimes, just dont be afraid to "fall behind" and work at your own pace.
I found that I tend to learn way more and retain information for a lot longer when I am relaxed.

Matt Way on a segway here! I am teaching general chem 1 and 2, and I tell my students the SAME THING about studying just a little bit every day, like an hour to an hour and a half or so per day, so it sticks to their long term memory, rather than lasting only short term. Cramming everything leads to my students second guessing and forgetting a lot, and I just tell them to do a little bit every day! Same deal with handling multiple classes, being able to juggle multiple classes is so crucial.
    Great video :)

i notice for myself, having a college force me to study 4 hours a day did quite a bit of damage to my excuse making. Now, if I see something that's vitally important, not "oh, every corner of the house isn't vacuumed," but serious stuff, I see the excuse, but it's faster and easier to slap it out of the way and start doing the thing that's important than it's ever been before. Except study, that's still hard, but other things... Yeah, age isn't an excuse. I started at community college again when I was 45, made an A in Algebra which I had no idea I could do. So, age won't work as a free pass, aside from that studies have shown that our memory improves if we go back to school in our later years and does stave off Alzheimer's and memory related problems.

Hey Math Sorcerer, I've been watching your videos from about a year or two ago, now I'm not a regular viewer nor do I research a lot in mathematics but I always found your channel to be authentic, unique.
I seriously got to thank you for these videos like this though. You sitting Infront of us and spreading your wisdom really helps me at least and comforts, as if you are my bigger brother telling me things he wished he told his younger self.
This video was really a wake up call to my situation. I'm born in a third world country yet of course it's not the worst thankfully, but I'm trying to up my overall GPA I get to try and access a scholarship outside my country most optimally a country I know where I can live in peace and stability with my family. Although I got a problem, Procrastination.
I always procrastinate on my studies and just focus on primary subjects such as math and physics but even then I do the bare minimum work in them.
This is an unhealthy habit I've had since the beginning of this year sadly, the thing that irritates me the most is that I know I have talent in these scientific subjects, I feel gifted even, I love tinkering my brain in new concepts but not when I need to work on those concepts.
And this video related to me so much, it just showed that I always placed excuses. For example I had really nothing planned today and I have my philosophy and math exam tomorrow but then my friends called me and I placed the excuse that Its my friends (that I talk with everyday) so it'd feel wrong to not spend time with them. And that lead me to this video cause I've spent the entire day messing around instead of working on the things, not should but NEED to be doing.
And I was especially irritated after hearing that quote you mentioned about how hard work always beats talent but if talent does that hard work that's something to worry about, it just showed me if I don't use this potential I know I have inside of me then what's the point of it?
This isn't really me asking for any sort of help but rather an appreciation for you helping us, this small community you built.
I'm not sure if you do or don't understand your influence to us but if you don't just know you're changing the course of many peoples lives to the better globally.
I'm very thankful to have stumbled in your channel on a random day, thank you and may god bless you, give you and your loved ones great health and protection.
(Also my bad for this paragraph being lengthy 😅)

Just to the thing. It works in writing, too. Even if casually flipping through a book, or sketching a small essay absent-mindedly, just do the thing! 😁 Anxiety usually lowers drastically, as the craft becomes a habit, a second nature. School is terrible at this, because any skill is operationalized and not internalized.

The main problem I had when I entered university was that every professor assumed we knew stuff. I mean yeah I used computers in the past, but I didn't know how emails worked at their core (smtp), or how networks worked or how computer hardware worked. I was not a computer hobbyist before, I literally wanted to learn from scratch by knowing programming basics from school. This discouraged me, made me start creating excuses and finally I took a break around my third year. I now know stuff, and I certainly don't assume my students know anything, if they know something additional that's awesome, but they are entitled into not knowing when starting. Trying to not make excuses while everyone constantly tells you that you "should've known that" is irritating, while from the very start everyone says that but never shows you in a definitive way

I actually have a question for you, I'm very interested in Topological Data Analysis, specifically persistent homology, and I'm hoping to use the concepts to work towards identifying anomalies and patterns in financial statements and transactions (blockchain is really interesting concept as well to follow). Do you know of anyone in the Topology field working with finance and/or utilising machine learning to do analysis? Thanks so much in advance, and your videos inspire me to work harder and believe in myself, I even have a 4.0 GPA!!! and a lot of it comes down to believing in myself enough to do my best work. "You have to sit down, and even if it’s not coming, you just have to start working. The muse has to find you working."
Christoph Niemann in "Abstract: The Art of Design," said this and I think it encapsulates the point of pushing through initial hesitation and for making excuses like waiting until your mood or the environment is "right" or "perfect". It was originally said in reference to being creative but it definitely still applies here.

The worst is listening to people who tell you that you need a "special brain" for maths (or anything else), that you need to have a certain level of intelligence (but they don't actually know what) to understand and learn maths. Those who say that parrot what they heard from adults while growing up, they gave up and are making excuses or want to harm you, by limiting your growth and your options (for instance, because they can't admit to themselves they didn't try hard enough and are envious you want to try).

"hard work defeats talent" fully agree, look at what Cristiano Ronaldo did, he won 5x as the best football player in the world, competing shoulder by shoulder with Messi who is pure talent (after Pele Messi is the best football player of all time most people think, many say Messi is). Now think about it, how come Cristiano Ronaldo defeated Messi 5x? Hard work is the answer

Well we need to be honest. If you are sixty the odds are you will not use the new math skills. That means your motivation is like a puzzle solver. In general the older you are the slower your mind is, even memory gets worse. The good news is that there are much better resources now. A graphing calculator is within your means. There are free ones for your phone or computer. TH-cam has some fantastic stuff for free, much better than your high school teacher back when. I picked up my algebra, trig book for $15. If you have access to AI , it is good at math. Can't solve a problem, give your Internet a try. Unfortunately you still have to grind through lots of problems to get better.
