      Remoraid was designed to be like a revolver (this is very obvious in it's beta sprite) that evolved into a tank (again, obvious in Octillery's beta sprite). Their relation is more to do with them both being inspired by weapons rather than the animals they are based on.

    • @IgnitedQuils
      @IgnitedQuils 2 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      I was never satisfied with its evolution since a fish becomes an octopus as they’re completely different species.

      Competitive Pokémon channels are starting to give me the desire to click off of them, and the reason is this sentiment that they are all breeding. Octilery is not forgotten. Pokémon is not a competitive game primarily. In fact, competitive is quite a minority in the grand scheme of things. It is intentional design that some Pokémon are better and some are worse. Imagine a Pokémon game where all the mons have equal power, coverage, potential, usage, advantages and disadvantages. Would that not be boring? There would be no charm to it anymore. No reason to pick mons for different attributes or reasons as they would all be the same.

    Addendum: Octillery has a small niche in DPP ZU as a Water-type wall breaker, but it’s largely outclassed by plenty of other strong Water types like Kingler, Walrein, and the recently banned Lapras.
    Octillery has a more solid niche in BW ZU, where special and physical sets can wreak havoc on bulky and slow teams relying on Eviolite cores. The change to BW and introducing a new tier saved Octillery from being truly Untiered.
    Octillery has a small niche in ORAS ZU as a Trick Room attacker. It’s fallen out of the metagame because of the presence of much stronger and faster Water types like Simipour, Politoed, Frogadier, and Shell Smash Huntail. Water Spout finally sees good use on TR teams.
    Octillery has no niche in SM ZU. Trick Room has better choices of breakers like Marowak. Silvally-Water and better other water types, and the general power creep keep Octillery out of the metagame.
    Octillery has no niche in current SS ZU. Although there are fewer total Pokémon than the previous generation, the smaller size of tiers has increased the level of power creep. It’s a poor choice of Water type compared to Qwilfish, Poliwrath, and Cramorant, which are more consistent choices for the bulky Balance metagame.
    Octillery had an okay niche in pre-DLC2 ZU, where it was a slow wall breaker and Trick Room attacker. However, it was threatened by popular Pokémon like Pikachu and Grookey, which interfered with both its wall breaking and Trick Room sets. Octillery completely fell out of the metagame when the Crown Tundra transformed the tier.
    For a small happy ending: Octillery does arguably have a niche in SS Subzero Used! It can reprise its Trick Room breaker set, and its resistances or neutrality to common priority like Kabutops and Carracosta’s Aqua Jets or Abomasnow’s Ice Shard make it a great partner to Marowak. Musharna, Gourgeists, and Carbink make great partners on this style of offense.

    Octillery is an interesting yet unfortunate case. While it has potent mixed offenses and a huge movepool with plenty of coverage for both of its attacking stats, it's just so slow and frail, man. Ok, octopuses are pretty squishy so I get the frailness, but why is it slow? Octopuses can move very fast by using jet propulsion! They should totally buff Octillery with more Speed, then it would be a Water-typed version of Infernape almost.

      I feel it's due to him being part Cannon, cannons are bulk and cumbersome, so they likely wanted to balance out the fragility and speed of Octopus with the sturdiness and slowness of a cannon, resulting in a weird compromise that actually hurts more than it helps.

    Octillery could be saved by giving it mega launcher and making octozooka effected by it. Would that make it great? No. However along with mega launcher coverage (aura sphere + dark pulse) it could be a lower tier powerhouse
    (Edit) After reading some other comments I agree, they should tack on the secondary steel type and flash cannon to these changes.

  • @TheRealW.S.Foster

    I can imagine an evolution for Octillery going one way in my mind:
    By trading Octillery while it holds a metal coat, it evolves into a Water/Steel type Pokémon that more or less becomes a fusion of a nautilus (the animal, which is what Omanyte is based off of) and possibly a tank. Although it would lose at least ten points in speed, it makes up for it by gaining a whopping twenty points in both defenses.
    Ability wise, these are the abilities I think would benefit it the most:
    *Analytic* - It boosts the power of a Pokémon's moves by 30%, but only when it moves last. With a proposed speed of 35, this would be another great trade that would give this new evolution even more stopping power in battles. Also, octopuses are one of the smartest of their species, which would make this ability a great reference to that fact.
    *Battle Armor* - This ability protects a Pokémon from critical hits. Outside of it being a fitting name for a Pokémon that's meant to be part tank, this would also lessen the danger of moves that it would be weak against because of its typing.
    *Bulletproof* - Definition: "protects the Pokémon from some ball and bomb moves." Similar to Battle Armor, it'd make for a good tongue-in-cheek reference to its part-tank nature. Outside of that, it'd be a rather good ability that would offer protection from moves like Electro Ball and Seed Bomb - or better yet, high-damage moves like Focus Blast and Zap Cannon.
    *Full Metal Body* - In short, this ability prevents moves & abilities that reduce a Pokémon's stats. It would work, logically, because of the evolution's part-Steel typing, and it would remind me of the film _Full Metal Jacket._ Also, having an ability that basically stops intimidate in its tracks sounds very useful in a battle.

    Octillery is one of my favorite pokémon so I've thought about this a fair bit. Since it uses it's special attack almost exclusively I'd redistribute it's 105 attack stat, take 75 off of it and give HP / Sp.Def / Def 25 each to top them off to 100, then give it Regenerator like you said.
    Since Octillery's original beta design looked more tank like with armor and an helmet they might make it a regional form of Water/Steel with that stat spread, though maybe that would make Octillery too overpowered? Would make for a great pivot with Flip Turn though.
    Other things that could be done would be to change Octazooka to a 100% accuracy but lower the chance to drop Accuracy to 20/10% akin to Water Pulse, include it into the Mega Launcher ability and give Octillery Mega Launcher instead of Sniper. Though Octillery's bad points aren't offensive in nature so that wouldn't really help it all that much.
    One of my big hopes for the future is that Gamefreak looks on some of the older generational pokémon and improve them (either via abilities, redistributing stat spreads, type rebalancing or increasing move pools) so they can keep up with all the powercreep going on. If that happens I hope Octillery gets it's time to shine in atleast the lower tiers once more.

    • @gamermanzeake
      @gamermanzeake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Due to Pokémon not being competitive primarily, it is actually intentional design that some Pokémon are better than others naturally and that shouldn't change. Imagine a game where all mons are equal in power and potential, with equal coverage and abilities. Would that not be boring as all get-out? You can currently look up folks solo beating all Pokémon games with mons as notably strong as Magikarp, some without even held/in-game items at all. What this means is that unless you are a competitive player, this honestly shouldn't matter to you.
      I do agree that Octozooka needs a buff, and it would be cool if Octilery could evolve into a steel/water type.

    Octillery has a BST of 480 which isn’t bad. It loses 20 points of speed when evolving from Remoraid, and I feel like if it needs stat buffs, maybe Speed and HP.
    It’s slow since it’s an octopus so maybe 20 more points in speed to make it more realistic, and 10 points to each of its defenses to make it more tanky, making it have a BST of 530. Not making it too strong but have good stats.
