I started soaking my jugs and pistons in that Evaporust…1/2 gallon at harbor freight for $12 bucks or so… you save it because it’s got multiple uses in it so you want to save it and get it back into the jug!!! In 4 days you take warm water and dish soap and it’ll scrub right clean!!! The deal with RedArmor is that it’s a paraffin wax based lube and not esters based like on a Dino oil or a synthetic blend… so too much is bad .. RedArmor is that 50:1 oil…32:1 could be too gummy and actually causes issues with a thick buildup!!!
Thanks for the evaporust tip, I'll have to give it a try, I used to run red arm2at 32:1 in all my vintage saws with no issues, having said that they don't get heavy use
@@chainsawcanuck yeah…I was talking with an Echo engineer who’s an old friend of my buddy… they were college roommates or something like that… he’s at GE… the guy was saying that because it’s paraffin based… more like a wax than an oil that having it too thick was worse than having it too thin,.. like 60:1 is better than 32:1??? I was having trouble processing that little factoid as I’m from the old school… if a little bit is good for you then a big shot of it is fantastic for you… but he said no… be very careful and never exceed the 50:1 remediation! I really prefer the regular oil esters based mix so I didn’t run it for very long… I’m in love with the little bottles of RedMax mix…as it’s the same as the husky semisynthetic and a tad cheaper because of brand recognition!!!! 😉👍. I’m always looking for the deal… like how Castol 2 stroke in the white Qt bottle from NAPA is $8 bucks and it’s the same exact oil that Stihl has them bottle in the smaller bottle with the Stihl name on it… and it’s not $8 bucks for 32oz it’s $5 bucks for 6.4oz…. You get over 4 dose’s in your Quart…$2 bucks per dose or can of mixture…. So you are only paying for the name recognition… I’ll buy directly from the manufacturer who the other manufacturers are sourcing from or I’ll research and see if they aren’t pumping out the same high quality products under a cheaper or an independent house label to be able to buy at the discount rate. When I found out that the Dollar General Corporation had approached Castol to supply all their DG product line of oils and lubes… I was jumping for joy… it’s not overly expensive and it’s a fantastic quality Oil’s and lubes! Motor oil… transmission fluids Castol oil is a good quality oil! They also have the little thumb pumper can’s… where you can use your thumb and squirt a shot of 2 stroke oil or regular oil where you need… they are awesome for building chainsaw’s when you need a little shot of oil you’ve got it!!! They were only $5-$6 bucks apiece last time I was there in the auto department… at the ACE Hardware that little thumb pumper can was $40 bucks!!! I’ve got 2 of them cheapO oil cans from Dollar General and they have been great for several years already!!!
@@chainsawcanuck yeah man… I’ll flip over the saw with the jug pulled off and I’ll use a coffee cup or something like that and I’ll just let a heavy carbon buildup coated piston where it’s just packed behind the piston rings and it’s solid… I’ll give it the 4 day soak… I’ll leave everything 4 days because I’ve never seen anything survive the 4 days… you grab a little tub of Dawn dish soap and warm water or a little simple green and a nylon dish or glass brush…we have a dollar store…was the 99 cent store and now with the crazy inflation going on the past 6 months now it’s the $1.25 store! LMFFAO!!! No kidding… they have some great stuff for $1.25… I get my little scrub brushes and the cleaner they sell is called “Awesome!”… it’s a little pint bottle into a 5 gallon bucket of hot water then soak over night and the majority of the grease is gone… a can of their oven cleaner takes care of anything! I have used the white vinegar and the other acids and nothing works like the Evaporust…no weird odor and no surface discoloration on your metal part’s… and with a little soap and warm water rust and carbon are completely removed as a mud like coating and your bare shiny metal appears from underneath!!! A blast of air or the heat gun and a light coating of oil and it’s absolutely Crystal clear and clean… seeing how the ring grooves get absolutely perfect with a little bottle brush and dish soap with warm water it’s just awesome to behold… there’s no sanding or rounding or altering of those sharp square corners of the ring grooves and the rings… they are basically just like brand new… a little 320 around the cylinder to break the surface and de-glaze it and some 1000 or 1500 spun around the piston skirt to re-establish the horizontal banding and it’s just like a new topend! I’ve seen so many people who try to rebuild an engine and they don’t completely clean out their ring grooves… the rings and those grooves are the most important part of the engine! Most people don’t even understand that the charge blows down around behind your rings and blows them out to contact the cylinder walls!!! And then they ride the oil slick coated walls and that’s why your piston skirt doesn’t touch the walls …. As soon as there’s a little carbon in that ring groove then the ring can’t float freely and the skirt starts hitting the cylinder walls and then starts leaving aluminum transfer!!! And the engine begins to eat itself up!!! Hopefully we catch it and clean it up and she continues to chooch on!!! 😂💪👍. Greatest dang hobby that I’ve ever found!!! God Bless you and your family!!!
Yeah man…not in bad shape for…”63…years old!”… you will be hard pressed to find a new plastic or fuel-injection Stihl still laying around and with a couple gasket’s and a missing flat head or two it’ll be back running again!!! Just solid old wood cutting work horses!
@@chainsawcanuck you have them now right??? Because old Leon from Leon’s freaking chainsaw’s either has the parts or knows someone that does!!! He’s an absolute miracle or total boss depending upon your speak…he’s a real “Peach”! is the way we ‘d say it !!! And, I love a really good mechanic who knows what other part will swap over and make something run… even from different manufacturers… this is close enough, type deal!!! It’s got points in there right… you gotta tear the starting strip of sandpaper off the back of those pack of matches !so you can in there and rub up your points into pretty shape!!!
