There are still people like that in younger generations - guys (and gals) that dress nicely, have good manners, and show respect to one another. But understand that you will not find these people at the local bar. I was married to my late wife 30 years, how could I want more? She wrote to me every single day while I was in combat, not even knowing that I would make it back or marry her. Her love kept me alive through hell - do not give up, there are still some good souls around to "build a nest". Peace be with you, Ciao, L

Ironically enough, this is why I’m struggling so much in dating. I get rejected left and right because I’m either seen as “not their type” or “too nice”. The majority of the girls I’ve dated in the past have had a history with abusive boyfriends who beat and cheated on these girls. It’s amazing how flipped everything became from the 1950s and how girls now have the upperhand in controlling exactly how they want their dating life to be and guys have no say. At least in the east coast of the United States

The closest advice I received about dating was from health class at school, which only addressed STD's like HIV. I think it would be a swell idea to bring back videos like these to teach life skill to teenagers, rather than just teaching them how to put on a condom.

I still remember the first date when I was allowed to drive. It was my dad's car, a '64 Pontiac Catalina. I consider it my first real date. It was after my sophomore year in high school, the summer of 1967. I was 16 and had my driver's license for a couple of months. The girl sat next to me in a study hall in the school auditorium. I surprised her with my telephone call and probably not in a good way. I believe she was unprepared with an excuse to say no. I asked her to go to a movie. With a discernable lack of enthusiasm, she agreed. After the movie I think we went for ice cream. There was no kiss goodnight. A few days later I called her for a second date and that time she was ready. She said no with an assortment of excuses. I felt downtrodden for about a week. Now, over 50 years later, those few days are filed in my brain under _Marty's nostalgia_ and it now brings a worldly smile. She is on Facebook. She is a grandmother in her upper 60s and works in a little craft shop. We are not Facebook friends. In fact, she may not remember my name.

My first date happened like this. When I was 15 in 1973 I was in a park and an extremely cute blonde haired blue eyed girl with a perfect figure was throwing a football with her brother and a friend. She was 14. At one point they threw the ball over by me and so I threw it back and then we started playing touch football. I tackled her a couple of times and she was really playful and seemed to flirt with me and I got her name. A few days later a friend of mine who was 16 told me he was going on a date and asked me if I could find a girl for a double date. I asked around and found out how to get in touch with the girl I met in the park and asked her about a double date. To my surprise she said yes. So my friend came over with his date driving his dad's pickup. One bench seat. I got in and we went and picked up my date and the four of us went to the skating rink. We skated for about an hour and then sat down. We talked for a while and I got close to her and then leaned over and started kissing her. We kissed for like 15 minutes straight but then she said "everyone is watching us" so we stopped.
Later we went to the drive in and ordered a cherry lime sprite. Then we started kissing again for 10 more minutes and I asked her if she had fun and she said "well one thing I know for sure.... you are a really good kisser!" That was one of the funnest days of my life partly because the girl looked almost like Marilyn Monroe. She soon found a guy taller and more handsome than me but I was just happy for that one night. I just couldn't believe that all happened. Later my dad found out that I was kissing a girl at the skating rink in front of everyone. He wasn't mad though, he seemed proud. That was funny. Years later I met another blond haired blue eyed girl and we dated and got married when I was 21 and she was 18 in 1979. We are still married. Life is good but sometimes I really miss my teenage years.

I'm 70 and have ONE piece of advice for old fashioned dating. If he calls you for a date, you have a nice dinner or whatever and then you wait for him to call you again? Rather call him THE NEXT DAY. Be 'in a hurry' as when at work... and THANK HIM FOR DINNER or whatever but DON'T talk future dates... just a quick dose of 'nice'. I can't believe how few young women know this trick. It can end in marriage.

Dear madam, I'm sorry to report that women today aren't interested in being treated with respect. They laugh at men that treat them well and make fun of them with their female friends. They quickly put them in what is called in today's vernacular "the friend zone". The men that women today obsess over is guys that treat them like trash: cheat, lie, ignore them, dating dozens of other women at the same time, pressure them sexually right away, etc. Women today would rather share a man that's out of their league with several other women, than marry a good man who's at her level.

In the early 1980s I was in high school. One day while sitting in class, out of the blue, for reasons i cant recall, the school 16mm movie projector was rolled into the classroom. And they played for us several of these old, antiquated 1950s instructional films on how to date, how to be polite, how to behave, etc.
My classmates laughed through them. The wooden acting, the cheap production values, the over politeness, the squeaky clean activities (a picnic, a carnival, a weenie roast, bike riding, a day at the park, dinner at home with the family, etc), the innocent slang of the time (gee, golly, swell, etc).
I on the other hand, wasn't laughing. To the contrary. As someone who was being raised in a severely abusive, dysfunctional home, i found these films to be quite charming. A sort of a time capsule of a more innocent era.
DON'T get me wrong. I had no illusions. I was well aware that the 1950s wasnt so perfect and innocent. That there were negative things going on in the 1950s, such as segregation, criminal activity, corruption in the public and private sectors, poverty, the occasional economic recession, war, etc. No decade is perfect.
But still, it seems to me that there were SOME things in the 1950s they were doing so right back then that we were doing so horribly wrong in the early 1980s as well as today.

I attended my best friends first date since she was too nervous and paranoid of being alone with a guy. I drove with her to the place. They went to a 1950 restaurant. I sat at the booth and had a milkshake when this guy sat next to me. I found out he is with his best friend who has a first date but his car damaged. And he had to pick him up from the car repair since he was late. So we both were watching over and noticed how bad their date was. The core of the issue is people arnt cooking from scratch anymore they arnt useing the basics of cooking to consume food but if you are born in a family who are obese you may be born obese and uneducated and there is proof that the genetic code is being changed for them people who are born into it which is realy bad. Their thyrode gland that helps with waight gain and weight loss is genetically messed up. It shows are little girl in this documentary where everything she eats makes her gain weight.

Having spoken to my great nana who is now in her 90s, in those days food was expensive. It wasn't mass produced like it is today, a lot of it you had to grow yourself. If you wanted to get fat youd probably need a lot of money. Family sizes were bigger due to lack of birth control too which put even a bigger strain on resources. Even if these people weren't living through the worst of it (eg war times) their parents would have so it would have been habit to economize with food.

My uncle told me one time that in the 60s when he started speaking in a ghetto way (he's Mexican), my grandmother smacked him and told him to speak like a proper and educated man. There was reinforcement from your family and friends to behave and to carry yourself well. Now it's just, "Do what makes you feel good." Smh.

They were both skipping class, wandering around the playground thinking about what to do. Schools in Australia are locked with security fencing so kids can't get out (or bad people in). He saw her, she took his breath away, and he mustered up the courage to approach her. As soon as they started talking they got on swell and they both realised they had a lot of things in common. He tells me they have a favourite movie, "Elemental" and that the movie's promotion picture looks like the two of them so they've taken it to represent them.
