It's early January 2022 & I'm sitting reading letters my mum wrote to my dad at various times and years after they broke up when I was a teen. Dad mentioned this song in his letters and I'm listening and a bit teary now. They REALLY loved each other, they'd just got lost and hurt each each other as they married so young. As the song says "when we're gone..." and now they're together in heaven.
@kaharoa9807 WTF? This song was written by an American folk singer, Tom Paxton, a contemporary of Pete Seeger, and who had fuck all to do with Ireland.
I always dreamed of love like that....like my nan and pop, mom and dad, etc. Seems like the days of forever are gone. Good to see it works out for some!
This song was played at my dads and now step mum's wedding the other day. It was played when they were on the dance floor slow dancing as the entire party and even the workers sat there staring at them in awe. The entire song they would not look away from each others eyes, and it was that moment i realised they would be together until death. It was the most moving part of the entire day and i wish them both a happy marriage

I love the song , the singer ,the instruments . I'm an Englishman and my love of Irish music and song is ingrained in me . I suppose that the chance of an Englishman becoming an honorary Irishman is akin to a rich man passing through the eye of a needle. One can only live in hope .Thanks for the beauty of the words and music .
Had many visits to Dublin, Cork & Belfast & been taken to many towns & villages in the North & the South & have met only friendliness. Of course I've been guided by Irish friends & warned maybe not best to go to this pub etc but have always loved going, had probably my best New Year Eve ever in Schull. This Englishman feels very at home there. Saw the Fureys in the Hammersmith (London)Irish club many years ago, fantastic performance, fantastic atmosphere.
This song brings to mind the love of my life...I lost him 32 yrs ago and he found me again in 2019. He had never forgotten me through all those years and this song touches my heart deeply and makes me cry for the 32 years we were parted. 💚

How wonderful to hear you say this. Your wife and you must be in love so much. I had this song played at my adorable husband Ken's funeral who passed away on 23rd November 2020. I miss him so much and my heart is sore without him as we were so in love. Even when he'd go out shopping or anything else he used ring me up and sing a love song to me as he was setting out to come home. Each day we fell more and more in love.
