MARTIN D-28 and D-18 HEAD TO HEAD
DROP A COMMENT: Which Martin Guitar is BEST?
FROM MARTIN:
Martin D-18:
Understated looks, timeless tone. The warm tone of mahogany and spruce couple with resonant scalloped bracing under the hood for a sound that's honest, authoritative, and clear. Vintage details include open-geared tuners and classic 18-style appointments pair with a modern, low profile neck for an old-soul sound. Available in full gloss, full satin with an aging toner top, or full satin with an amberburst top.
Martin D-28:
The Martin D-28 has been the quintessential workhorse of music legends like Hank Williams, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and so many more. It’s no surprise because the D-28 is crafted with East Indian rosewood, which is very resonant and offers deep bass and rich overtones. It is a well-balanced guitar for all playing styles. It also combines vintage appointments like open gear tuners, an aged toner top, antique white accents, and a faux tortoise pickguard with a modern neck profile for a fast, comfortable playing experience. Previously available only in full gloss, Martin has now added two new finish options to this longtime staple so future music legends like you can rock the one that suits your personal style and budget. You can now opt for a full satin-finished body (top, back, and sides) with your choice of an aging-toner top or an amberburst top. Which one will you choose?

Really enjoying the clarity of the D-18. Great demo, thanks.
I own both and I find the D18 much louder but I prefer the scooped sound and smoothness of the D28. But it all depends on what type of song you’re playing as they both are so good at different things.
Last year we went guitar shopping AB’d d18, d28, and hd28 for several hours. Me and my wife both preferred the d18.
I think the 28's sound choked. Like muted....
We ? you needed your wife to make your decision lol
The D-28 sounded compressed to me when demoing it against the D-18 I ended up buying.
I feel the D-28 has more “shimmer” and treble. The D-18 is wonderful warm and more open. I have both and enjoy the differences.
Both sound great! However, The D-18 sounds a little brighter and louder. I guess there’s a reason why they call it the “Banjo” killer.
I dont know if it is a no-brainer, but in my opinion as an older folk guy, I love the sound of Martin Dreadnoughts of any nomenclature. To choose between these two is not easy, but I would opt for the D-28. I've had a couple of rosewood guitars, and I'm a bit partial to that brighter tone.
Last year, I purchased both of these guitars new from Sweetwater. I immediately liked the warmth, and MUCH BETTER BASS of the D-18. It has a full well balanced tone with great mid-range and highs as well. The D-28 too my ear was all midtone and some highs with NO low-end. Of course all the professional reviewers always tell you that the D-28 has more low-end, is louder, etc., etc. Well, not to my ear! I really wonder whether they are all just parroting the same thing and have ever really played them both side by side.
For several months, I played them both. I actually played the D-28 a bit more, as I was really trying to convince myself to like it. I finally decided that I just couldn't convince myself and sold it to a local Guitar Center for a substantial loss.
Moral to the story, if at all possible, play them both side by side before you buy!
The D28 has far less mid range than the D18, you ears are broken
Perhaps your's does, but mine wasn't much different in midrange from the D-18 and decidedly different on the low end. And again, I spent many hours playing them side by side and switchng back and forth. How about you, have you done that? :)

First time I've heard anyone describe the differences between the two like that and I've played' worked on and repaired dozens and dozens of martin guitars over the past 45 years. What kind of strings were you using?
Same strings on Both guitars?
I was using Martin Lifespan 2.0 13-56 Medium Treated MA550 on both. Both had new strings put on along with truss adjustments at the same time by a very skilled luthier in my town. So, the setup was identical on both.
My main issue with the D-28 was it didn't have any good low-end when compared to the D-18. I've since heard from other who also felt this way about D-28s.
Interesting comment and experience, thank you for sharing. I found that my D-42 custom (Adirondack and Guatemalan rosewood) has less low end than my D-18 authentic with Adirondack and sinker Mahogany back. The D-18 is also louder and more resonant. It transfers more vibes to my chest bones than the D-42. I play the D-18 more than the D-42.
Enjoyed the review, just my opinion, reviewers describe the guitars in detail but never mention the type of strings?
I have a D28 and I love it. But the d18 sure sounds nice. It's brighter. I think the 28 is more well balanced
They do seem to have a little clearer mids and trebles!
For my ear I find that I ageee with you regarding the tones of these two guitars.
That said, it would have been easier for me with just an ok ear, if when you went back and forth from one to the other, you would play the same passages. Food for thought.
Thanks for the info and good job
My take is D28, HD28, D35, HD35 for 2/4, 4/4, and most 3/4 - D18 for everything else and some leads. I have heard some awesome lead sounds from HD-35.
I have a D-18. Best guitar I have ever played. The sound is IMMACULATE. And I prefer the 18 over the 28 in sound tests.
I went for a Gibson J-45 and got an Epiphone Texan (USA) and love it
I went to my closest Guitar Center to purchase a d18. I already have an hd-28 and d-35. I came home with a Gibson j-45.
Good choice 👍😎👍🎸
Nice flex 💪🏽
I have become such a fan of the D 18's over the years . The D 18 sells it for me. Though I cannot play one anymore because of a bad fall in 2014 ! I have to stick with the small body guitars like the 00's ,000's and OM's . My favorite Martin is my OM 21 .
I own both and love them equally for different reasons. My favorite of the two changes with my moods...
I hear d28 is warmer than d18 , is it opposite really
Same here
Do these have the same strings and gauge? 18 sounds a little muddy on the bottom to me. Both are beautiful instruments.
What is the nut size of the d18?... and what is the nut size of D28 ... ? Thank you...
Liked the D18 but to me the D28 is just perfect to my ears.
D-18 has a bit more rizz
brighter and sings louder
Great vid. I have a 2014 D 18 and it’s great for fingerstyle alternate tunings. Clarity with nice bass.
The background music really helped. By themselves, I preferred the D18. But in a mix, it depends on whether on not you want your guitar to blend in or stand out.
excellent videos! thank for giving me more insight on martin guitars!
My old ears tell me the D-18 is more precise but not harsh. The D-28 is mellower but not muddy.
Both are nice.
D28 man here but i got mine 5 months ago.
I prefer the clarity of the tone of the D-28. BTW Thomann doesn't carry any CF Martin products.
Thank you for watching! They do carry Martin but only in certain countries
Owned a D18 in the '70's. Amazing sound. My desert island guitar between the D28 and D18- the D18.
I currently own neither and play a Taylor koa. Very different.
I do like the D41, D42, D45 series.
But the real guitar secret- no two examples of the same model are the same. Which is why I hesitate to buy a guitar I haven't played.
That Taylor Koa is an amazing guitar too. I have been to the factory a couple times and they really put a lot of development into their guitars with Andy Powers working on them .
@@752brickie Thank you. Not a lot of new acoustic guitars with a hard case and built in electronics for the $1,800 I paid that compete. Maybe some Recording Kings, Alvarez or Eastmans.
@@theapplepaul I have a couple Alvarez that are amazing as well as a Blueridge 12 fret that is solid wood.
But the Martin’s are still my favorite go to guitars! But I am from PA ?? Ha ha ha !
Sounded like 2 guitars that have yet to be played in accompanied a distracting drum track that kept me from hearing the tone of each respective guitar.
For me, the winner is the HD28, which isn’t here.
Its about picking the one that instantly makes you feel like you can play better and opens new doors. The tone will click with your ears. Loved my 00016 but knew I found the one when I played the D35. Price is irrelevant
These things are best evaluated after years of aging. These sound nothing like the pre war ones but few can afford that price point. As for quality of build they have been the standard for over 100 years. The one that is the best depends on the skill of the player.
They sound a lot alike, a few extra points to the d28 it has a slightly warmer sound. To me the big difference is the wider neck width on the d28.
They have the same neck profile and neck width. The big difference besides the back and sides wood is the Standard D28 is non scalloped bracing.
D-18 for the win
Also a difference in bracing: the D18 is scalloped and the D28 straight.
Not a True Comparison when the exact same thing isn't played on each guitar..
I like the d18, I thought the individual notes rang out better to me.
D-18 will always sound better through a mic/recording equipt. D-28 is a beast sonically live to the naked ear
Love my '22 HD-28 and now wanting to add a new D-18 for shits n giggles.
I hear exactly the opposite in comparing the two. The D18 has a shimmering clarity, whereas the D28 has a richer sound with more harmonic content, reminiscent of a grand piano.
The best Acoustic GUITAR is the Taylor K24 ce Builder’s Edition. Thèse two Martin are good but far from the K24 ce Be.
I don't own a single guitar that cost me more than $800. I've played more expensive guitars at a store, but never bought one. I can hear the difference, but with my playing level, the guitar won't make me sound that much better.
Well, mate, you're smarter than most of us. I wish you were around to save me a fortune.
Personally I prefer the sound of the d18 but I do agree they both have their place,I truly don’t think one is better than the other, both are great just different
D28 is my love
I prefer the Martin. :))
I’m happy with my Yamaha c40
Get a 0000-28 and a D-18 perfect pair
La d 28 rimane una splendida chitarra dal suono caldissimo
my god, we are paying almost 1000 extra dollars more for the guitar here in europe
😁D18❤❤💯
D 28 is a legend guitar since 1950 ,i loved D28
😊how can you get into someone’s cell phone without them knowing it?
Too much fiddling and fumbling around strumming, not showing how to dig it and show string to string definition on both guitars
👍
I know I'll get some crap for saying this but I think it's ridiculous to be this picky about guitars. I've been playing 40 years and own $300 Fender's to $4,000 Martin's and the price to sound difference between all my guitars is certainly not worth it. I got caught in the hype which is why I spent a fortune. People are amazed when I pick up a $300 guitar and play just the same as my Martin. 90% of people aren't going to know a difference because it's so slight to normal people. We get caught up into spending money because we all do it to ourselves and to each other. That being said, I wouldn't be caught on stage without my Martin, just because I'd worry what other guitarists would think. 😂
😂
At the end of the day it varies guitar by guitar. I play a lot of classical and finger style guitar and perceive the differences as soon as I start playing. There’s a smaller margin of era in the high end guitars and feel in them so people gravitate towards what their hero’s play. I gravitate towards the individual guitars responsiveness
After 40 yrs of playing you may be loosing your hearing!😂
@@karlcountry2363thats funny! 🤣🤣
I respect this take, and you're right, most people can't tell. But you, the player, can tell, and to me that makes it worth it. Does my D18 sound ten times better than my Epiphone at ten times the price, of course not. But it does sound noticeably better, and it is 10 times more fun to play. Add it all up and to me it's worth the investment. But to each their own.
D 28 more expensive
D28 no brainer
terrible comparison.
What i can say with your comments about j45 is its more compresed than the D18. The D 18 feels more alive if that makes sense.Just subscribed ..great stuff.🏴 Thats Wales if you didn't know.
